  4. 2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS NEWTON EAGLES 2018 Record: 15-0 Overall, 5-0 District Class 3A, Division II State Champions The 2018 Newton Eagles ran undefeated through their schedule with no team coming to within single digits of the Eagles until their semifinal date with East Bernard. A week later, the Eagles would take down Canadian to claim their second consecutive Class 3A, Division II State Championship. But in May, the tragedy that everyone dreaded came as Head Coach W.T. Johnston lost his long battle with a rare complication from a lung transplant. Many think that with the loss of their inspirational leader, as well as the loss of offensive starters Darwin Barlow and Josh Foster and key assistants, that the chances of a third straight championship are dim. But new Head Coach Drew Johnston, who has spent the last two years being groomed for the job, 11 returning starters and the small city of Newton appear ready to spring a big surprise on the State of Texas. Head Coach: Drew Johnston Assistant Coaches: Tabor Westbrook (Offensive Coordinator), Jason Hicks (Defensive Coordinator), Jeff Parks (Running back), Chase Copeland (Offensive Line), Doug Samples (Wide Receivers), Marcus Carver (Defensive Line), Ricky Rodriguez (Defensive Line), Jeremy Russell (Secondary), Corey Jenkins (Linebackers) Offense: Six starters return to the Newton multiple wing offense in 2019. The likely candidate to step in and lead the Eagle offense will be senior Dom Seastrunk (1st team all district at wide receiver in 2018). He will have quite a contingent in the backfield to assist him as seniors Kevin Watson (2nd team all-district), Zach Gulley (2nd team all-district at wide receiver) and Val Fowler (12-3A-II Offensive Newcomer of the Year) all return to key the Newton rushing attack. Also look for Gulley, as well as junior receiver Dre Shawn Spikes and junior tight end Bryce Westbrook, to figure prominently in the Eagle passing game. Senior center Avante Burnham (1st team all-district) and senior guard Jamarion Samuel (1st team all-district) will lead an offensive line which will also feature junior tackle Hunter Amburn. Defense: 5 starters return to the vaunted Newton 7 Diamond defense in 2019. All state senior defensive end James Sylvester will lead a defensive line which will also feature senior defensive tackle Micheal Clark (1st team all-district), Spikes (Defensive Newcomer of the Year) and sophomore defensive end Antwain Hunter. The secondary will be a particular strength for the Eagles as Seastrunk (2nd team all-district at cornerback), Watson (2nd team all-district as outside linebacker), Gulley (2nd team all-district at safety) will lead a defensive backfield that will also feature junior Robbie Phillips. Special Teams: Special Teams positions will be finalized during summer camp. Schedule: Aug. 30 - at Kirbyville, 7:30 pm Sept. 6 - at Silsbee, 7:30 pm Sept. 13 - West Orange-Stark, 7:30 pm Sept. 20 - OPEN Sept. 27 - at Gilmer, 7:00 pm Oct. 4 - Spring Legacy School of Sports, 7:30 pm Oct. 11 - at Kountze, 7:30 pm* Oct. 18 - Hemphill, 7:30 pm* Oct. 25 - at New Waverly, 7:30 pm* Nov. 1 - Corrigan-Camden, 7:30 pm* Nov. 8 - at Anderson-Shiro, 7:30 pm*
  5. 2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS KINGWOOD PARK PANTHERS 2018 Record: 6-6 Overall, 5-2 District 3rd Place in District 9-5A-I The chances that the Kingwood Park Panthers would make a second straight trip to the playoffs looked a bit dim as Clayton Maple's Panthers limped into district with a 1-2 season mark. However, once the bell rang for District 9-5A-I play, the Panthers went in full sprint mode, going 5-2 and gaining the coveted playoff spot. Quite a bit of depth returns for the Panthers as 13 starters return for the 2019 season in a bid to send the Panthers to the playoffs for the third year in a row. Head Coach: Clayton Maple Assistant Coaches: Mark Miller (Defensive Coordinator), Bruce Cox (Offensive Coordinator), Jeff Knight (Defensive Line), James Showers (Linebackers), Greg Baldon (Defensive Backs), Kyle Grimes (Wide Receivers), Dominique Allen (Offensive Line), Chris Buechner (Running Backs), David Feliciano (Quarterbacks/Defensive Backs), Oscar Vargas (Defensive Lines/Offensive Lines), Michael Starkey (Linebackers/Running Backs), Josh Jackson (Wide Receivers/Defensive Backs) Offense: Seven starters return to the Kingwood Park offense in 2019. 6. 2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS ORANGEFIELD BOBCATS 2018 Record: 5-5 Overall, 2-5 District 6th Place in District 12-3A-I Going into the district portion of the 2018 football season, the Orangefield Bobcats were 3-0 and the chances of success in their new district home, 12-3A-I, seemed quite bright. However, a spate of injuries in a rugged district proved to be too much for Josh Smalley's young Bobcats. However, optimism of a playoff season Coach Smalley will have more depth of both sides of the ball in the form of 7 starters on the offensive side of the ball and 8 on the defensive side to push the Bobcats into the playoff picture. 8. I don't know that pay has ever been any more of an issue at H-F as with other schools. My understanding is the administration and the school board at H-F, by reputation, is quite heavy with their micromanaging. Also, that who gets playing time, regardless of the sport, sometimes depends on who knows who rather than who can do what.

  20. That was because Coach Hooker had not told the kids and neither Big Sandy ISD nor Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD had announced it as official. Therefore it had been still in the rumor category and we do have rules against posting things like that, Plus, the Wildcats were still trying to win a state championship so why distract the players (which Coach Hooker assured me do read this message board) with this news? You'd think as a coach (which I have been told you are) that you'd be somewhat sensitive to that.........guess I was wrong.
  21. Coach Hooker took the head baseball coaching positon at 5A Saginaw Boswell in the Fort Worth area.
