SETXsports is going fishing again this weekend as almost 500 teams will take to the waters of Lake Sam Rayburn in the SETX High School Fishing Associations' March tournament! In December, the Buna team of Trace O'Dell and Matthew Martin took the tournament with a bag of 20.39 lb. In February, the Huntington team of Danny Mullins and Robert Noel topped the scales with a bag of 22.55 lb. In the Angler of the The Year Awards, the team of Jacob Root and Chase McAdams of Brookeland, on the heels of a 9.74 lb big fish in the February tournament, have pushed to the top of the list. The Silsbee Tigers seek to take their next step toward the Class 4A title as they take on the Navasota Rattlers in this Region III Final! The Tigers, 29-5 on the season and champions of District 24-4A, reached this final traveling a road that included a 120-68 bi-district win over Liberty, a 104-59 area round victory over Houston Furr, a 97-69 win over Houston Sterling in the regional quarterfinals and a win over Lufkin Hudson in last night's regional semifinal, 81-62. Meanwhile, the Rattlers, 24-5 on the season and champions of District 21-4A, reached this round with a 64-40 bi-district win over Houston Kashmere, a 60-58 area round win over Hardin-Jefferson, a 63-53 regional quarterfinal win over Houston Wheatley as well as a 70-55 regional semifinal win over Center last night. The winner of this game will advance to the Class 4A State Championship Tournament next weekend in San Antonio. The Big Sandy Wildcats continue their trek through the Class 2A playoffs tonight as they take on the Grapeland Sandies in this Region III semifinal! The Wildcats, 35-2 on the season and champions of 24-2A, reached this game via a road that included a 71-44 bi-district win over Lufkin Pineywoods, a 101-52 area round win over Martinsville, and a 72-40 regional quarterfinal win over San Augustine. Meanwhile, the Sandies, 27-8 on the season and champions of 20-2A, reached this round with a 77-43 bi-district win over Cayuga, a 74-44 area round win over Riesel and a 60-43 regional quarterfinal win over La Poynor. The winner of this game will face the Kerens/Tenaha winner for the Region III championship tomorrow at 2:00 pm. The Hornets, 29-8 on the season and champions of 20-4A, had a road that included a 87-61 bi-district win over Rusk, an 82-51 win over Waco Connally and a 64-57 win over Tatum in the regional quarterfinals. The winner of this game will face the winner of the Center/Navasota game (which will be played immediately after this game) in the Region III Final tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
