1. freshman was a joke. they only allowed like 15 pitches per team at a time, runners were left on bases, etc. It was confusing but it also took care of anyone being able to keep "score". If you WERE keeping tally though, Nederland would have won I suppose. Neds JV team beat Orangefield the night before like 44-3 so they might have been trying to save that sort of embarrassment. It was poorly run though and was a colossal waste of time. I hope this isn't what the season is going to be like. Haven't heard much about Varsity. Hopefully they did better than they did against BC though cuz they looked a little sloppy (yes, I know, it was the first scrimmage Ned/BC but still)
 2. WOS freshman team scrimmaged Nederlands freshman team and Nederland varsity scrimmaged Orangefield.
agreed....were you at the "texas league practice" or "so called scrimmage" last night?
I thought Canton was a junior and this thread is asking about underclassmen???
That would be an underclassman. This thread does, however, ask about freshmen and sophomore underclassmen.
Have always known juniors and seniors to be upperclassmen and frosh & soph to be underclassmen. Whatever though...it's not important!
NHS brought up a good point about do you want a kid making Varsity and seeing little playing time or do you want your kid playing JV and playing everyday? My kid is a senior and this is his first year to play on the Varsity team. By playing JV the last 2 years he was one of the starting pitchers instead of maybe just getting a few innings here and there. He doesn't throw 88-90 but since he was 13 has always been very effective. He doesn't get 10-15 strikeouts a game but does a great job in keeping the ball in play. Don't get me wrong, it would have been nice for him to have been on Varsity already but then again the kid just wants to play ball. I decided long ago to just stay out of way and let the coaches make the decisions. It is best for the players and the team.
Dually noted gentlemen!! Thank you for the seasoned advice! I mean this sincerely too not sarcastically. I will do my best to sit back and watch all the teams in action. New to the program so it's always good to hear advice from those that have been there already.
I didn't read about anyone complaining. Voicing concerns (after what they've seen so far) maybe but not complaining. LaSalle is a great kid though who should at least be given the chance to begin with. That's just my opinion of course. He's not my kid but I see how hard he's worked to get on Robbins varsity team. It's difficult for the kids to understand what exactly is needed to play at that level for Robbins when they see what is chosen over others is all. When weaker players with weaker work ethics or kids with grade problems are chosen over ones that have similar talent (if not more), better work ethic and better grades, it would be questionable to anyone would it not? Especially the boys working hard to get there.

How about the use of profanity when training our young men and women in the armed services? Is that appropriate? I'm not trying to delve off into a subject that is off topic, but I wonder if people look at this in the same light as training kids in sports or school. Discuss.
You didn't try to delve off topic but you most certainly did!?! If our armed forces can't take a verbal beating then PLEASE get the hell out of the service. Cuz heaven forbid you get taken by terrorists, you WILL be tortured and I promise you they are NOT going to speak nicely and calmly to you!! If you can't take the heat then get out of the gym or off the field or whatever!! Stop babying the kids so much and let them grow up and start learning REAL life lessons!! Life isn't easy and other people don't care how you were brought up so deal with it!! Back to the military issue though....obviously our douche bag president wants pansies in the military but I personally would prefer some thick skinned brutes to protect my @ss!!! Thank you very much!!!
LaSalle looked strong for Nederland. Nice speed and control (even with some heckling from the BC dugout). Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with heckling but I just wanted to point out that it was strongest during Cole's pitching and he handled it well. In my opinion, he was one of the strongest pitchers Nederland showed that night. Not exactly sure why Robbins hasn't moved him up permanently?! I thought it was about what would be best for the program but with some of the decisions made so far it doesn't quite seem like it.
It's only been a week of indoor practice.  Noone knows what will happen.  One scrimmage doesn't tell it all.  I've had one or both of my sons on Varsity for the past 5 years.  While I have not always agreed with Coach Robbins, I do understand that with the depth of talent in Nederland, he has to make some tough choices that will not make everyone happy.  He has several pitchers that would start/play on other teams.  It's a good problem to have.
I do understand that. I guess that's why first impressions are always so important since they make just that...impressions!
No the one I was speaking of is a Sr. and been there awhile. I know they have some big boys at Episcopal, should be a good test for the Eagles..cant wait.
Yea I think his name is Blake. I keep hearing about the 6'3" junior they just got. He's played select for several years too. He used to go to Clear Creek but they must have seen the dead end there and moved on. Smart move IMHO. I've seen him play in Houston for Kyle Chapman. He seems like a solid player.  Episcopal is looking strong for this year. Should be a good season!

Know your role. Nederland has been pretty successful from what I remember. They have 3 year lettermen and D1 players that work their behinds off (in multiple sports too). They do not need to be taught, they need to be observed. I am willing to bet that most (if not all) of the people on here will acknowledge talent. What most of us do not like is being told in advance how much we should be in "awe" of someones talent. If anyone, for one second thinks that any of us do not want talented players on our teams, you are sadly mistaken. I will never shy away from competition. It makes the TEAM better. I do shy away from arrogance. It trends to do just the opposite. My advice to you is to stop watching BP. Go and see what happens when the fans are long gone, when no one is in the stands. Go and see who's taking the extra infield, shagging some extra fly balls with his teammates. That's the kid I want to watch!
I couldn't agree more...THAT'S when you'll see the heart of a true player, is when no one else is looking! Wish more coaches watched at that time too!!  :( Obviously everyone wants talented players/teammates on a team. What's hard to stomach is the praise of anyone that has a bad attitude, disrespects coaches/teammates/bosses and has terrible work ethic. You see most of that off of wherever you practice/play/work.
 16. I'm talking about whoever St. Annes uses is horrible! KellyBasketball is just the person who likes to argue with me.

 19.
Please do us all a favor and figure out a way to put people on the floor that at least have a clue as to how to call a game.  Thus far this season you have been a JOKE with the majority of your chapter.  I have kids in the chapter who are doing a better job than the majority of your varsity officials.  I will personally send you the game tonight from the OF/WOS game so that you can see what a pathetic excuse of a crew that you had tonight.  Beginning with the opening minute where the short white official blew a call up until the call where he called a charge on the wrong kid he is a disgrace.  I have watched him call at least 6 times this season for various schools and he has yet to have a clue what the heck he is doing.  If this is the best that youu can offer then you should not be a cease as a chapter and we should try another source for refs.  You are not there to take a over a game, your job is to officiate it.  I hope to find the name of that crew so that all might see the level of incompetence.
Oh my gosh...AGREE AGREE AGREE!!! It's a total joke...on ALL levels!! Maybe Kelly Basketball needs to read this so he realizes I'm not the only one calling out the awful so called officiating!! He just thinks I'm a whiny parent but as we all have witnessed, there is definite cause for concern!!! Thank you!!!
 20. Coaches aren't getting the respect they deserve nowadays!! A child does NOT have the "right" to deserve respect from an adult/coach. This is the problem with our society! Kids have this air of expectancy...they expect to be respected without giving respect themselves. Kids expect to be able to break rules and not having consequences. There has always been a chain of authority and on a team the coach is at the top and the kid is on the bottom and the parent is even below THAT!!! If little Johnny is going to disrepect and talk back to a coach, I feel he shouldn't even waste his breath (cussing or coddling) and go ahead and kick the kid off the team. They do reserve that right to do so.  Coaches need to remember that THEY RUN THE PROGRAM not the kids and their parents!!!!!!!!! PLEASE......remember this coaches!!!!!!!! Respect FROM a coach will come AFTER the kid respects the coach him/herself first!!!
 21.
English build Nederland from the bottom and is building a program, from LD on up.  He'll be consistently good there, and he had to fight "the powers that be" in Nederland at first to get it going.
This is a sad thing too!! There ARE other sports than football!!! I personally don't know English but I have yet to hear one negative thing about him. That in itself says a whole lot about the man and the type of coach he is. Especially on THESE forums :) Congratulations Coach English for standing up for your players and the sport you love. Because you care for your players and sport, it will succeed more than it has already!! Other coaches could/should take note!!!

 23.
Let's not forget that no matter how much a coach contacts/solicits college scouts he can't pass the tests needed to get into college nor can he/she keep their grades up in college classes which is also needed to  stay in college and maintain that BIG  :D scholarship they are getting.  Yes, we've had many High School State championship teams from this area but how many of those players have extended their playing careers?  Thank you HF for being an Exemplary school district and preparing our kids for college whether playing sports or not. I love this site setxsports.com but too bad there isn't one for setxGRADES.com because for the majority of the kids they will need the grades to be successful in anything they do.  Even if they do make it to the NBA/NFL/MLB, etc they should know how important it is to understand AT LEAST Math (so that your Accountant/CPA is not stealing their money) and English (so that they can read/comprehend college applications, scholarship agreements, and contracts).
VERY well put and I agree wholeheartedly!!!
