  1. Can't see the spread working in Nederland, not enough overall team speed... Smash mouth football between the tackles is what Nederland needs to be focused on.
  2. Nothing against Mosely, but his chances of playing on Sundays is next to zero... Although not a lock, Jamaal has above a 50 50 chance... There is a HUGE difference between a very very good running back and greatness (which Jamal has the potential of having)... This is like asking if you would want Jeff Bergeron or other back with a ton of yards or Earl Campell.... Both will dominate on Friday nights, but doing it on Saturday afternoons on national TV is TOTALLY different... Although Jamal may not be the next Earl Campell, he is a lot lot closer than Micah.
  3. Would be sweet to a PNG and Nederland sweep of #1 and #7... Scalp Em Indians & Go Dogs!!!
  4. This is what I wanted to see from posting the thread.... Obviously I was only making my choices on coaches I knew about... Will be neat if everyone started making their choices after the next chart comes out.... Thanks WOS87 for your work!!!
  5. Agree... Although PNG and Nederland start everything off with huge games, Dayton plays WOS then 2 weeks later plays Friendswood (which is in the "so called" top 20 in Dave Campells magazine.." I think the predistrict game of the season will be the Dayton WOS game... Loads of talent on both sides. Should be an AWEsome game.....
  6. Interesting that Central got some votes and Dayton didn't.... And... For Crosby and Barbers Hill to get votes and not Dayton... Something is "fishy".... Dayton has so many returning, they cremated Crosby in Bi District and Barbers Hill lost so much talent... If Dayton can run the table and win their 1st 3 games, hopefully they will be in the top 20...
  7. Thanks for the info about Stewart's time in Crosby... When was Haynes the QB at Lamar???? I know he is in the Cardinal Hall of Honor....
  8. The reason why I thought it would be best to put retired coaches is that you must be retired to be in a "hall of fame" and that it would not involve current programs in the mix. Just from the posts in this thread hopefully we have all become aware of some coaches that we haven't heard of... I think (in no particular order) these three are in... Obviously Hooks will replace one of these when he retires, and maybe even Barbay... Bum (coached and led the Bulldogs to a state championship during the golden age of Bulldog football, would later become an NFL icon) Ethridge (led the Indians to an unprecendented 4 straight semifinal appearances with two of those years making it to the state title game. No other program in this part of the state had a fan following like PNG did during those 4 years (much less in the state), also the tradition Ethridge fostered is still present today. A great coach leaves a winning tradition far after he leaves the school.) Durley (you can not underestimate the signifigance of West Brook winning state during their first year in existence. Plus another state championship at Hebert puts him on the list) WOS87 is comtemplating his top four... Will be interesting to see how he places the great coaches fromt he past in SE Texas... Just wondering... WOS87... How did Lincoln do when Little Joe was at Lincoln, and was he coached by his dad???
  9. I believe Dayton got Stewart from Crosby... Hopefully Haynes will do for Hardin what Stewart has done for Dayton... GOOD LUCK HORNETS!!!
  10. I think every team will be in the hunt for one of the top 3 places, including Vidor. Dayton and Central are ahead of the others, but it should be a battle for that 3rd spot, and I see Vidor in that battle...
  11. The purpose of this thread was to get some more "ancient" history of SE Texas football on this site... Most of the members are of the "younger" generation, and I don't think they know how important the Nederland dynasty of the 50's or the PNG dynasty of the 70's were for this part of the state, as well as other teams mentioned by WOS87 post.... Not trying to make "spite" of the coaches, just trying to dig out some history... THANKS WOS87 FOR YOU POST... Was very interesting
  12. Durley's state championship (I think) was huge for Beaumont (maybe the most important state championship in SE Texas history with it being involved in the merger of Forest Park and Hebert) That season really bonded the kids at West Brook together. I went to college at Lamar with a friend from West Brook, and his stories of that season were special. Look at WOS 87's chart about all time wins... Doug Ethridge's 4 year dynasty is #1 (from 1974 to 1977). Alex Durley I think is in due to the circumstances involved in his state championship. Bum Phillips is (in my opinion the greatest) Was Ozen the coach of the 1976 Hebert team??? If so, he would get my #4...
  13. Mount Rushmore of Golden Triangle Coaches (must be retired, state championship a must...) 4 coaches only.... 1. Bum Phillips 2. Doug Ethridge 3. Clifton Ozen 4. Alex Durley Does Barbay deserve to be in??? Hooks is a lock in when he retires... Who is Hooks going to knock out???
  14. Coaches from Golden Triangle only... No coaches from the Houston area...
  15. So... 1. Bum Phillips 2. Doug Ethridge 3. Alex Durley 4. ????? Don't know if Alex Durley would be on the mountain, who would you pick as 3 and 4, or would you remove one of my top 2???
  16. Who would be the top four all time (must be retired) highschool football coaches in SE Texas. I will start off with two... 1. Bum Phillips 2. Doug Ethridge 3. ???? 4. ???? Don't think Coach Washington from Lincoln ever made it to state... Would think a state championship would be a must... Don't know his name, but Westbrook's coach in 1982 (their first year of existence when they won state). That was huge for Beaumont ISD... I think of the current coaches, only Dan Hooks would be gauranteed a spot, who would he knock off the mountain??? Let see if we can get an agreement on the top 4 (only 4) and they need to be retired...
  17. Can't remember the games, but there has been some games when tempers flared during play, and the teams both left the field without shaking. Wish I could remember the games, but it has happened. At the time I thought it was a wise decision.
  18. I wish this thread had some stories from the early 70's.... My memory only goes back to 1975, and that is from the PNG playoff games in the dome (not from the district games)... Would love to read some stories about little Joe Washington or other SE Texas athletes that made it to the NFL... Would also be neat to read about some stories from the 50's when PNG and Nederland won state. My Uncle was on the state championship team from Nederland and he has some fond stories about Bum. I lived on Merriman in Port Neches and found out that I grew up 3 houses down from the house that Bum lived in. For those that are interested, the house is still there... Going down Merriman from the high school, cross Magnolia and it is the light tan brick house on the left 2 houses before you get to Texas Ave...
  19. Agree... Dayton's coaching staff is top notch. From the 7th grade b team all the way to the varsity team. Go to a junior high game and you will notice that most of the time the difference is winning or losing is the coaching. When your 4 junior high teams (7th A & B, 8th A & go undefeated or only lose one game, you can gaurantee that success will carry on into highschool. This has been occurring over the last decade and the talent keeps coming.
  20. To me... The battle is for the 3rd place spot... Dayton and Central are easily the top two. Reading all the posts it is really hard to eliminate a team now from contending for the 3rd place spot. It might be wise to see who has the easiest schedule going into the last 2 games. PNG's schedule at the end is brutal, they better be up a couple of games. Having to end the season at Bronco stadium won't be easy if they need a win. Would be neat to see Lumberton finally make it in the playoffs and end their eternal playoff drought. Right now I just think the playoff spots will be the same from last year... 1. Dayton (going udefeated will be very very impressive) 2. Central (next to Dayton they will have the speed to win every game) 3. Nederland (their kids EXPECT to make it to the playoffs, that could be the difference)
  21. Dayton needs to make every effort this year to at least get into the 4th round. This really depends on the bracket you are placed in and who is the 3rd or 4th round opponent. We have a great schedule to prepare us for the playoffs. In the Texas City game it did look like the Bronco's were out of sync with their speed. That to me is the difference in the playoffs. When playing against an opponent that has overall more speed, it is just hard to stimulate that in practice. This year we should have our overall quickest team since Stewart has been here. I don't know if our line will be as good as the team with Pearson on it, but I know we will have more skill position speed. Our coaching staff is one of the best in the area. I feel very lucky that my son will be greatly influenced by the coaches here. Hopefully the Broncos can add a quarterfinal, semifinal, and maybe even a state appearance on the sign at Bronco stadium.
  22. The homecoming peprallies at PNG are AWEsome!!! After the peprally they have an "alumni" fellowship with refreshments. It is nice that PNG does this for their alumni. However... I do believe all the hoopla is a distraction to the football players, but it is part of the Friday Night Lights "tradition".
  23. Thanks outanup for the answer to the question... There is life after Friday Night Lights, and hopefully the young men playing now must realize that there is life after football and that even the greatest of the greatest playing now face extreme odds of making a life playing football for a living.
