  1. Coach Knight is doing a great job coaching a team with 6 seniors, 4 of which start...a group of talented kids that really did need some coaching. Can anyone believe how these small kids rebound against OSU and UK?  I think we are poised to do well in the SLC this year with a reasonable expectation to advance in the tourney...and even win it. To all on this site that are happy with the turnaround in LU basketball, please keep those thoughts in mind next year when Pat is playing an all D1 schedule (as he claims) with Donley Minor and Stan Brown as his only seniors and a bunch of newcomers. In the meantime, lets back a talented group of upper-class athletes and an inspired and knowledgeable new coach by showing up for all the conference home games. Can you imagine the embarrassment for the rest of the SLC if we put 6000-8000 fans into the Montagne for conference games...is that not a reasonable goal?
  2. We went 0 for 12 on 3 pointers against Ohio State and lose by 20. Had we hit half, we lose by 2 points. So, I say if we hit half our 3s, then the difference in the game is single digits as KU will be looking past us to the big weekend match-up with some other Cardinals (Louisville). Memphis...oh excuse me, KU (Memphis in disguise) starts a lot of freshman and we start 4 seniors...so perhaps ROC's recruits with the help of some real coaching throws a scare into Roc's old boss. Biggest upside (aside from KU cash) is ESPN exposure which should help recruiting. Go Big Red!
  3. The Villanova game was the grand opening for the Montagne Center. I was there. Now lets use that as a conversational benchmark. Our 10th biggest crowd, right? So now tell me which SLC school's biggest crowd EVER topped that? I'm thinking NONE (...please prove me wrong). Now...if so, and with the right coach...why can't we get back to that?... (other than TEXAS in the '90s all the other top 10 crowds were in the 80's...and the TEXAS game sucked because we had all the local tea-sippers in the area showing up in their burnt orange...ugh). I think we can...I'm with Coach Knight and our impressive class of athletic seniors who are now actually being taught the value of playing defense! He says we can be the new GONZAGA! Why not? So let's help him. I will be driving over from Houston to all the home SLC games that my job will allow so that I can contribute to the crowd totals. I'm excited as an old time supporter...
  4. Pat Knight will sell out the first men's basketball game in the Montagne because his teams will be good AND he'll offer the Golden Triangle fan base real opponents to see play...NOT more of Louisiana College and the like. Notwithstanding the fact LU outdraws all other SLC schools (I think) in basketball, its been 25 years since going to watch LU basketball was really cool. I think LU basketball is about to become "cool" again! And don't forget the value of winning...if I recall correctly, there actually was a sold out Montagne for a women's game when they had the big NCAA run before the program fell apart due to scandal.
  5. TCU will be our biggest test to date other than Louisville...if we can take them out at home, then there is a lot of reason to feel good about our chances in the SLC...
  6. Nice road win...team is playing well...need to enjoy this year as our seniors are doing all the scoring!
  7. Just checked in...had a work issue and missed the game...but great news!!!!! GO BIG RED! ...and congrats to Coach Knight!
  8. Nice to see us dominate a "real" D1 team. Very impressive win. Too bad about Mike James...tremendous athleticism...but the team was arguably better without him if he cannot buy in to Coach Knight's system. The guys played disciplined and controlled...nice shot selections and great effort. Playing defense is now "cool" at Lamar! And who would have ever thought we would've controlled the boards like that on an Atlantic 10 team. Our seniors really look good...Miles, Lamb, Davis all good, but this was Harper's day...gotta be his best game as a Cardinal. The only negative was the crowd size...I know, weird start time and lots going on...but if Coach Knight is going to bring D1 teams into Beaumont, we're gonna need to get some D1 size crowds into the Montagne.
  9. That's ok...nice 2nd half comeback against the 9th ranked team in the USA...what if instead of shooting 23%, we had shot 35%...or 40%...had we done that, we would've been close. Gotta believe these guys can do that...especially in conference where it counts against lesser teams.
  10. I'm a season ticket holder since the first year of The Montagne Center. I feel really good about the program after last night. Conrats to Coach Knight and his team...especially the talented seniors who actually look as if they've now been coached!
  11. You gotta love D. Lamb! Best hands ever...king of the junk baskets!
  12. If the ICW game crowd of last Saturday had showed up at the last home game of 1989 against rival McNeese St, the "then" administration would have been shamed into letting Ray Alborn and 22 returning lettermen from a .500 team have at least another year to prove they could win in the SLC. As I recall, that last game crowd amid rumors that the program was in jeopardy was under 5000.
  13. I personally didn't care for the guy last Saturday night...a couple of times the mic was left open and I could hear talking in the background...
  14. I'm confused...we lost Brazier and Coles for the Swedish guy?...so we have another scholarship available? Would be nice if LU could simply tell us the 2011-1012 season roster...I mean it is August, right?
  15. So this is nullified? Pat Knight adds juco transfer, has one spot to fill June 16, 2011 at 5:19 pm by Chris Dabe Lamar University men’s basketball has a second new player and another scholarship left to fill, coach Pat Knight said Thursday. Stephen Coles, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward, will transfer from Indian Hills Community College to play at Lamar, the university announced. Coles helped Indian Hills to a 22-10 record with 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor. He earned second-team all-Region II honors. Coles joins Nikko Acosta from Gulf Coast Community College as the only two new players signed by Knight. Gone from last season’s team are guard Tremell Adams, center Orlando Brazier and forward Darius Harris. Adams left for personal reasons and Brazier and Harris left because of poor grades, assistant coach Clif Carroll said.
  16. Coach Peyton would probably not remember me...but I met him a few times in the 1970s as a student...WHAT A GREAT GUY!!!!!!!!!
  17. Very nice. Us "out-of-town" alums tend to be behind the curve. I like what I'm hearing from our new coach. That said, another big man would be nice!
  18. So how many (if any) scholarships are left?
  19. Wow...sorta looks like the old Lone Star Conference circa 1965...we can be Lamar Tech again!
  20. SMU was really good? Legally? ...perhaps before the second World War? I can't seem to remember. BUT...you are right...it is all about today and the future...Billy Tubbs is the past...and Bobby Knight is the past...but these guys were winners once upon a time. Billy loves his alma mater. I just don't understand people on this thread that have such negative views about the most successful men's basketball coach in Lamar's history. It's a new day...and I'm wishing the best for our new coach.
  21. I don't understand the dislike for Tubbs either, but then I was there when his teams went to the sweet 16, beat the likes of Missouri in the tourney, lost by a point in Chicago to then #1 team in the nation, DePaul, lost at the buzzer to Phi Slama Jama at Hofheinz, etc. All of that is so far removed from the recent state of affairs of LU basketball that its hard to even think that it ever really happened. But it did...and when it all happened it was Billy Tubbs that ran the show.
