  1. Serious prediction, Central 42 Vidor 14. Vidor gets one score early catching Central offguard then Central score 42 unswered points. Vidor gets a gimme in the 4th quarter versus the Central 3rd string.
  2. I dont really think you can blame anyone, especially not the coaches for the overall performance. When the kids are in position, but cannot make the play, not one single play, its not coaching. Its poor execution. Granted Ned has always given up yards, but not points and not big plays. If there are lacking coaching techniques, the only one I can think of is they have not perfected their coaching techniques on how to finish an open field tackle. Even great Nederland defenses of the past decade have struggled with missed tackles. I can remember too many nights wringing my hands in frustration at the missed oportunities where the defenses failed to finish the job. They gave up yards, but in the end they did not let anyone score on them. Nederlands defenses have always been best when they can control the ballcarrier and force them into heavy traffic. That was how they stifled offenses in the past. They never gave up a big play either. I can remember years and years where you never saw a RB sprint for the goal line against the Dogs D. I remember the term "bend, but dont break" used a lot when describing them because they gave up yards, but not points. So yeah, maybe tackling is a coaching issue but don't ask me how to fix it. Maybe ask Coach Matthews, Vidor was great at it. My point is, in the past they were successful defensively despite the fact they missed a few tackles because they were able to force the offense to run into traffic because they controlled the line, eventually forced the ball carrier into a crowd and then swarmed. Now they are super easy to spread out and are forced to try to tackle a ballcarrier running at full stride in the open field too frequently. If you dont force them to slow down, and you cannot tackle in the open field, you are dead. So IMO Nederland needs to figure out how to do one or the other and fast.
  3. Despite what you have seen from the defense, Nederland actually has a really really good offense. Still one of the best around IMO. Its just a shame that they have to score everytime they get the ball because its almost a guarantee that the other team will. When the other team scores in 2 plays every time they get the ball and you have to drive the field, the odds are not stacked in your favor.
  4. I remember that Gohlke hit. That and many others. He was one of the hardest hitters I have ever seen.
  5. I think it was 99. Katy was playing Madison with Vince Young. Katy had the ball and threw an out route to the tight end. The tight end looked about 6'5. He rounded the corner and accelerated down the sidelines toward the goal line. The little safety from Madison came flying up out of the endzone and met the guy in traffic head on. You could not see the actual hit, but the DB looked like someone standing outside of the back of the endzone had a rope tied to his back and jerked him backwards . When the TE hit him flew flew directly backwards like he was shot out of a cannon, feet and arms extended forward flying backwards. It looked like something you see in a cartoon. It was one heck of a collision.
  6. I think Dayton and Central going 1-2 is a no brainer. If Nederland loses MCM, they will most likely be out of the battle for third. If they win, then EVERYONE will be fighting for the 3rd spot. Makes for a fun district, but after that its going to end quickly for the district. I dont think there are any real state contenders in the district.
  7. Total Crap shoot. No way to compotently predict this one. I will predict that its a high scoring game though. That should be a fair guess.
  8. This year is going to be a test for Bulldog fans. Are we going to stick it out? Time will tell.
  9. I am not shocked... Vidor, Nederland, Ozen, PNG, LCM, Lumberton. They are all weak this year. It looks like there will be a changing of the guards this year. No telling who is going to make the playoffs besides Central. Oh yeah Central and Dayton.
  10. Defense is absolutely non existant. Like it or not, without Micah going both ways its over.
  11. This is about to get really ugly I am afraid. Absolutely no defense whatsoever. 21-0 Central in the 1st quarter. Total collapse.
  12. Thats a nice honor for Hooks but really it should be shared equally by Coach Thompson. Without Cornell, Hooks is nothing and vice versa. WOS has a name because of its DEFENSE and that was all Coach T. Nothing against Dan, but he has only been half of the equation. There are always support casts behind the man, but I think this one was more 50/50, Hooks was just the more visible of the two.
  13. Yep, I would say Chris Goehlke (sp?) as well. That guy killed people and he was not all that big. I have seen LOTS of hard hits, but Chris consistantly dished it out.
  14. I was at that WOS/Calallen game. It was a great one. Some other great games were Bay City and Ned in 2000?. BC wins 7-0 with a major goal line stand at the end of the game by BC. It was a major defensive battle. Katy vs. Houston Madison 2000, Vince Young was QB for HM and it was a shootout between two really great teams but Katy ended up blowing it out. 1999 Katy vs. Garland State Championship game was really memorable. WOS and Nederland in 2000 I think. It was at WOS and I remember Paul Thomas was a senior. That was the game of the infamous "lateral". PNG vs. Schertz Clemens. I so enjoyed watching the PNG defense stifle that cocky little white boy from Schertz. That was a sweet game at Kyle Field and I will never forget Dustin Long on the QB sneak to put it away. 13-7 PNG vs Nederland game in 1984. I was a senior and I will never forget breaking the losing streak.
  15. Good to hear they are back James. I read the article about Coach Neumann's concerns about grades. I hope that does not come into play. As far as the what the 2000 defense would have done, I wasn't there last week unfortunately, so I will take your word for it. From what I am reading about this kid from Waller, everyone writing makes it sound like no one can stop him.
  16. We are talking about HIGH SCHOOL here . Not college or professional. Lots of great names mentioned here though. Names that are not on the list of great players. From my home school and not yet mentioned. Sean Yoder -WR/DB Scott/Jeff Mayhew- OL/DL Ryan Peletiere-DB Michael Boyd- LB Ryan Cobb-LB Ryan Sanchez- DE Aubrey Brisendyne-LB From the district that are memorable for me. Paul Thomas- WOS Tim Feathers- WOS TE from TJ that went to Miami- cant remember his name- Kevin Edwards?? Calvin Roberts- Lincoln Jeff Bergeron-PNG Bo Wortham-PNG Chris Goelke- PNG
  17. I would gladly, once again, give up a district title for a looooooong playoff run. 8) Micah is over 200 pounds. Mosely is always the fastest guy in a sprint to the goal line, regardless of his 40 time. That is what is so exciting about watching him run. He has another gear that is hard to believe. I like the nickname, "the machine". It suits him imo. What is really exciting is the unexpected. A passing game. Alex has really matured as a QB and really sees the field well. He is hitting receivers in traffic and under pressure. We all knew Micah was going to be good. Its great to see that he is not totally alone out there. If he were his stats would not be nearly as good. The offensive line is fantastic, best I have seen from Nederland in a long time. Defense is real good too. Waller must have really had something, too bad I missed the game. Would not surprise me to see them meet up again in the R3 final if the chips fall right. Can Nederland be beat in district??? Sure they can, anything can happen on any given Friday night. Will they win district, chances are real good that they finally will,,, but who knows. We should have won in 99 and PNG came out of nowhere to grab the title and a run at the state championship... You just never know!
  18. I would honestly say that the most rabid fans I have seen in a decade of watching lots of Texas High School Football are Ned, PNG and Katy. I have also sat with BC, LaMarque, Bay City, WOS, and have witnessed dozens of playoff games played in the Houston area in the last 10 years. LaMarque has really great fans too. I would say that WOS is a truly under rated fan base. They are small but they are enthusiastic. The thing I like about them is their modesty in the stands. They make you feel welcome and everyone seems to be friends. They love their Mustangs but they are not "in your face" and their is no sense of socio-economic separation, everyone is equal. I like that.
  19. hmmm,,,, what does this say for Vidor now?
  20. Are the kids mentioned from WOS kin to Paul Thomas and Kerry Franks?
  21. I really dont get it. All I hear from my friends, and I have quite a few, from Port Arthur after a Memorial loss is that bad coaching is the problem (which I agree with). I cant understand why any city would be mad about getting a coach with a great history that has proven he knows how to win given the talent to work with. Memorial definitely has a ton of talent. I hope they dont set themselves up for failure by resigning themselves to disliking the guy for stupid reasons that have nothing to do with his coaching ability. The smart thing to do if you really want to win, which I know Port Arthur faithful follwers do, is rally behind the guy, encourage the kids to trust him, follow his program and see what happens. If they with him GREAT! If not, THEN ride him out of town.
