  1. A lot of this conversation sounds so familiar. [Hidden Content] Last week it someone wanted to know who our defensive backs were. There was talk of the best passing attack in the district and how we just wouldn't be able to defend it. How the running game had improved and was going to be potent. How someone was injured and not available the second half of the PNG game, but that he was healthy now, etc., etc., etc. My only question is whether or not these posters are going to show the kind of class exhibited by the Nederland posters after their game against the Broncos? I put a quote up earlier from the PA News from Larry Neumann who has coached and lost against both teams and he said the Dayton team that beat him last night was the best team they had faced. I figure he probably knows more about it than any of us "posters." My prediction: If Dayton plays their best and PNG plays their best, it won't be close . . . Dayton wins. Here is a stat you won't find in the newspapers: Nederland, 0 for 11 on third down plays. They never crossed the 40 - their own. Welcome to Dayton, PN-G.
  2. uh, HELLO? Where have you been? We have been dealing with it. Four-out-of-five shutouts, the last two of a historical nature, and in those five games have only given up an average of 2.6 points per game. See ya Friday. Welcome to Dayton, where we haven't been scored upon since Sept. 14, by then, almost two months ago. Two of us were thinking the same thing - you just beat me to it!
  3. To reiterate, Dayton is NOT the same team. Keep in mind, we were using our third string quarterback. Now, for many that would be a single loss, but for the Broncos it was a dual loss. For those who saw the game or Purple's highlights, you saw #8 AJ Dugat catch a pass, get hit, drag one tackler 18 yards and two tacklers almost 6 yards into the endzone. Having him at QB at Lumberton not only hindered the QB spot (I'm sure no one will argue that our number two QB is better than our number three), but look what happens when AJ is part of the offense at receiver and sometimes running back - it's a whole new game.\ Plus, we got hosed vs. Lumberton - now I'm not blaming the refs, per se, at least not for the whole game, but we had some defensive linemen on several plays get ridden down to the grass "bulldogged" and "tackled." Also, and this was not on the radio or in the newspapers, but when the Raiders opted to go for two, our captain tried his best to call timeout. The ref looked right at him and didn't give it to him. That, my friends, is a fact. STATEMENT: On the night the Raiders played the Broncos, with a little help, the Raiders were the better team THAT NIGHT, with a little help. If they had played each other only a week later, or had Gregory Charles gotten over his staff infection one week earlier we would, NONE OF US, be having this conversation, no matter who the referees had been.
  4. Appreciate your honesty and frankness. “The credit goes to Dayton. Tonight, they were the finest team we played all year. That’s no disrespect to the people we’ve played this year. But, that’s all we can speak for is the night we play people.†Larry Neumann, courtesy PA News.
  5. *V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V**PF***PA Port Neches-Groves (6-0) - - -183 - - 100 Lumberton (5-1) - - - - - - - - 161 - - 101 Dayton (5-1) - - - - - - - - - - 212 - - 21 Nederland (4-2) - - - - - - - - 150 - - 158 Dayton is NOT the same team that lost to Lumberton. FACTS: Bronco defense gets the fourth shutout over five games against district opponents and overall, in district play, have given up an average of 3.5 points per game. PNG is second, having given up an average of 16.67 points per game. The Bronco offense is averaging, in district play, is averaging 35+ points a game. PNG is next, averaging 30, but as yet, have not faced the best defense in the district, bar none. The comparisons made are against common opponents. Is the picture coming into focus yet? TRUTH: Many of those picking PNG to knock off Dayton have the Indians scoring 21 or more points and Dayton only scoring 14 or less. QUESTION: HOw does that figure. SUPPOSITION: Participants are making their predictions based solely upon a desired outcome rather than a logical calculation. Bring it on. PS - Last week, Nederland was the offensive leader with points scored, now they're last among the four contenders. The only game that counts for "playoff contention" next week is Nederland and Lumberton. Loser stays home. PNG and Dayton are in.
  6. Yeah, and it must have made too much "sense" in a world that doesn't want to hear it. For the most part it is true that statistics don't mean much, UNLESS there is a pattern. The Bronco defense, unlike any other team, with the possible exception of PNG since their pattern has been of winning and until defeated they are No. 1 in the district right now, has set a defensive pattern BETTER than anyone's in the district, including PNG. Offensively, the statistics aren't that far apart, but defensively, there is a gulf separting one team from the "rest of the pack," and that kind of statistical pattern can't, rather should I say, shouldn't be discounted. Someone needs to go out and shoot and pluck a bunch of Crows - I have a feeling it's going to be on the menu for quite a few folks who "aren't paying attention."
  7. Maybe there needs to be two polls when it comes to figuring out who will win district, make the playoffs, etc. - one for who, logically, you THINK will win this game or that game and the other for who you WANT to win. Some seem to think those two lines of thought are one and the same. Did you know that until last Friday night, Central had gone 28 games since being shutout (first three non-district games of the 2004 season), and 64 games since being shutout by a district opponent (20-0 by Baytown Lee in 1996)? This is Central's 22nd season of existance and Dayton became only the 8th team to blank the Jaguars in their 230-games played through last week. That's amazing, and don't get me wrong, it says a lot for the Jaguars - it's HARD to keep those guys out of the endzone. I just thought this was interesting (district play only, since common opponents): *V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V*V**PF***PA Port Neches-Groves (5-0) - - -135 - - 79 Lumberton (4-1) - - - - - - - - 140 - - 88 Nederland (4-1) - - - - - - - - 150 - - 95 Dayton (4-1) - - - - - - - - - - 149 - - 21 Bring it on.
  8. Well, don't know if you were from one of the schools or talking about the district as a whole, but since I'm "the guy" thought I'd chime in. Coldspring 45 - Liberty 43 - No mistake here. I said this was the top two teams in the district and except for a "hook-and-ladder" at the end of the game, this would have been a Liberty win, 43-37. These two should win out. Splendora 42 - Cleveland 20 - Should have been a gap - 22 points is about right. I said three teams at the top and three at the bottom. Shepherd 49 - Tarkington 26 - The only reason there are not three teams without a win instead of two is because two of them played each other last week. I did think this game would be closer, but wow, Tarkington is in a downspin and I don't know what can bring them out of the funk. This week: (1) Coldspring at Shepherd - This game will belong to the Trojans and Shepherd is the Pirates, not the Spartans. Trojans by 35* (2) Liberty hosting Cleveland - Not as ugly, but a scalping just the same. Josh White could rush for over 300 yards, however look for Stewart to put in a bunch of kids later on who didn't see any playing time last week and keep the score down. Panthers by 21 (3) Splendora hosting Tarkington - Potentially a real ugly contest. Difference is that Splendora will be looking to prove something since they have to travel to Coldspring next week. Wildcats by 35* * 35 is the highest margin I will predict, otherwise it could be read as demoralizing. Personally I feel like every kid and most coaches in HS football are doing everything they can to win. I know talent is not always the same, and certainly not all coaches fit their teams, but for the most part every kid is trying as hard as they can to compete and win. Last week's Anahuac at Hardin game is one example. That being said, some teams just don't know how to win. I know. I went to Baylor.
  9. OK, then by rule, the Broncos should have been awarded a safety. Had the Ozen player muffed the punt at the 50, and the ball had gotten past him and he recovered it at the 46, then the ball would have been marked for play at the 46, not the 50. However, the player got control of the football in the endzone and ran it out. Now, it he is unable to advance the ball, then possession should have been marked in the endzone where it should have resulted in a safety. Not brought back to the point where the player muffed the point. And shouldn't at the very least, a penalty for delay of game been made? Like I said, the official blew the call. Anyone agree? Disagree? IMO, according to what took place, the player was allowed to return the muff to the point from where he muffed it. I don't see that in the above rules.
  10. Ref blew the call. If ball hits ground or is touched by member of kicking team in flight, fair catch signal is off and all rules for a kicked ball apply. This is the rule.
  11. As far as Sterling vs Alto, let's remember too, that Sterling went 3-7 last year. and Alto was the state champion. Also, there was an article earlier, in August, in the Baytown Sun that football turnouts at the two Baytown schools was at an all-time low - in other words, they couldn't remember when it was so bad that no one was coming out for football. They mentioned that where they used to have 170 out, now it was something like 70. Can it happen? Yes, in fact as you've shown, it did. But apples to apples, oranges to oranges . . . well, how would alto have done against Baytown Lee last year, or Northshore, Pearland, or Deer Park? Much different outcome.
  12. The ONLY way that scenario would work is if the 5A school played the same number of players the 1-A school played. Whereas the A school is going to have four, five, even six ways playing both ways the entire game, the pool of "good" players available to the AAAAA school is sufficient enough that hardly any one would have to play both sides of the ball. It would be just a matter of time, especially in the line, before the AAAAA school totally wore down the A guys. After midway through the third quarter, it would get ugly.
  13. with the score tied at 14, a fumble on a lateral to Karam. Dayton recovered at the six and one play later, Dugat hit Ronnie Powell in the corner of the far endzone for the TD.
  14. Yes, I spoke to Larry Haynes about 9:30 a.m. and he confirmed this.
  15. There is only one "s" in Coldspring, two if you say Coldspring-Oakhurst
  16. The "Bramahs" have two wins, blowouts over teams with losing 0-2 records, Sealy (35-7) and West Columbia (41-20). Against WC they rushed 39 times for 284 yards and 142 yards passing. Of their five touchdowns, two came via 58-yard passes, and one on a 50-yard run, so they do have "big play" capability. WC had 113 yards on 31 rushes (stout run defense) and 180 yards through the air.
  17. The sub-varsity games for Dayton and Friendswood (one was to be in Dayton, the other in Friendswood) tomorrow night (Thursday) have been scrubbed.
  18. At least for Dayton, it has nothing to do with wind blowing down the school or a tornado (which this one has been forcasted to have multiple of those dancing around) ripping off the roof. It's because of transportation issues. Picture the buses out and about in flooded areas, getting stuck or washed off the road. It's not about "getting out of class" or a teachers' day off. It's about throwing caution to the wind and staying in rather than risking even one serious accident. It's an intelligent move. The alternative, therefore would be . . . oh well, you get the picture.
  19. I've put up the articles on Dayton's upcoming game with Friendswood. Golly, we're banged up. Also is the write up on the Nacogdoches game and Coach Stewarts take after the game entitled "What a difference a week makes in Bronco football." [Hidden Content]
  20. All I can say is the players seem to be a bit more "quiet" this week. Maybe they're more focused. Friday night should speak volumes.
  21. No, someone uploaded the wrong copy which was based on erroneous information, like the year before (2005). Anyway, "this ediot" just fixed it like it was supposed to have been.
  22. Ok, here is the link to the stories about Dayton vs WOS, Coach Stewarts commentary (he's also quoted quite a bit in the first article), and then stories on BH vs Wharton, Liberty vs Bridge City, Tarkington vs Hardin, and Westbury Christian vs Hull-Daisetta. Coach Stewart was not a "happy camper." [Hidden Content]
  23. Stories got moved this morning to one page over [Hidden Content] The photo caption has been "fixed."
  24. Thought this might "feed the frenzy" with only, ah, two more days (since it's after midnight) until football kicks off in the area. [Hidden Content]
