Cardinals streaking again with 43-28 win over Bulldogs

Dan Perrine

The Orange Leader

BRIDGE CITY — Two weeks before the start of district play the Bridge City Cardinals appear to be firing on all cylinders with their second straight victory. Friday night the Cardinals outscored the Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs 43-28 at Larry B. Ward Stadium.

Just like the burning of the large BC at the beginning of the game, the Cardinals came out on fire. Bridge City (4-1) took the opening kickoff and drove for the opening score of the night.

Matt Menard carried the ball five times for 28 yards. Cameron Dishon ran a reverse 27 yards and got the touchdown on a 15-yard scamper. Devin Bertrand kicked the point-after to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

That lead was increased just a minute and a half later when Evan Boren intercepted a Kelly pass and returned it 48 yards for the score. The point-after was blocked and Bridge City lead 13-0.

Kelly (2-3) cooled off the red-hot Cardinals by scoring its next two possessions. The Bulldogs lead by quarterback Dakota Eddins used 12 plays to drive for their first score.

Eddins completed four passes for 33 yards, three of them to Nick Schrapps for 34 yards. Eddins got the final yard on a sneak for the touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Willie Lighty narrowed the Bridge City lead to 13-7.

The Bulldogs took their only lead of the game on their next possession driving 60 yards on 8 plays. Eddins completed a first down pass to Cris Quinn. Then Eddins threw a pass in the flat to Melvin Adderton who broke a couple of tackles to reach the end zone for 31-yard touchdown. Lighty’s kick gave Kelly the lead 14-13 with 7:40 to play in the half.

It took Bridge City just over a minute to regain the advantage. Menard ran back the kickoff 60 yards to the Kelly 37. After two short runs, Josh Lemoine passed 33 yards to Cale Hyde for the touchdown. Bertrand made the score 20-14 with just over six minutes to play in the first half.

Bridge City almost added to that lead as it took the ball with a minute to play in the half. The Cardinals drove to the Kelly 40, when Lemoine tried a repeat performance and passed to Hyde in the end zone. Hyde and two Bulldog defenders all reached for the ball which fell incomplete as the trio tumbled to the turf.

The Cardinals Randyn Myrick recovered a fumble by Kelly on the kickoff to open the second half to give Bridge City the ball at the Bulldogs 31. Bridge City reached the 6, but were forced to try a 25-yard field goal. Bertrand’s kick was just wide right to keep the score 20-14.

Another turnover gave the ball immediately back to Bridge City as Zach Heinze intercepted a deflected pass at the Kelly 36. Lemoine combined with Dishon for pass completions of 9 yards and 16 yards, the second good six points. Kelly was offside on the point-after, so the Cardinals went for two and got it when Lemoine passed to Allen McBride to make the score 28-14 with 5:17 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs cut the lead in half just before the end of the third period. On fourth-and-three Eddins threw a screen to Ben Peyton who broke loose for a 36-yard gain. Patrick Cook scored on the next play from 3 yards out.

Menard was the focus of the Cardinals next scoring drive. He carried four times for 34 yards and bulled over for the touchdown from the 5. Luke Rhodes the holder on the point-after took the snap and rushed for two points into the left corner of the end zone to make the score 36-21.

The game appeared well in hand for Bridge City when the Bulldogs bit back in a big way. Facing fourth-and-three at the Kelly 14, Lemoine tried to complete a pass in the left flat, but Kelly’s Dillon Guidroz stepped in front of the pass for an interception which he returned 95 yards for the touchdown. Lighty added Kelly’s final point to make the contest a one-possession game with 5:45 to play.

Bridge City responded by driving 68 yards to close out the scoring. Lemoine completed a big pass on third down to Rhodes for a first down. Menard scored the touchdown on a beautiful cut back run from 23 yards with just over a minute to play. Menard finished the night with 197 yards on 23 carries.

Next week the Cardinals are off before opening district play in two weeks at home against Hardin-Jefferson.

Kelly is an extremely young team..with the exception of Quinn, Anderson, and Adderton they have first year starters at nearly every position. The line is extremely young and are playing their first full varsity season. Still trying to find their way as a team. Bridge City played well and ran the ball extremely well. Kelly will improve.
