August 28-29-30

Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic, Tyler

Notes: Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium will host another lineup of heavyweights: Gilmer vs. Jasper, Tyler Lee vs. Lufkin and Tyler John Tyler vs. Texarkana, with a fourth game a possibility. All six of the high schools slated for '08 have played for at least one state championship in the 2000s. Three of the six schools in the 2007 event played for a state championship last December (Tatum, Gilmer and Euless Trinity). This is the same event which has attracted San Diego Mira Mesa, Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna (Florida state champions in 2005) and Las Vegas Bishop Gorman (Nevada state champions in 2007), since 2004. No intimidators in this event.

August 28-29-30

Champions Classic, Abilene

Notes: The Shotwell Stadium tripleheader will include Abilene Cooper hosting San Francisco (Calif.) Reardon, Duncanville vs. Odessa Permian and Abilene vs. Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central. Permian was considered for a season-opening tripleheader in Florida and would have been matched against Miami's Booker T. Washington, but opted to stay closer to home. Glades Central traveled to Abilene for a 7-on-7 event last summer, loved the atmosphere of West Texas Football and is one of the most athletic programs in Florida.

August 28-29-30

Texas Football Classic, San Antonio (Alamodome; 5 games in 3 days)

Notes: One of the nation's oldest events (started in 1999) has evolved into a showcase primarily of South Texas teams, with numerous alumni from the game (Abilene, Brownwood and Waco, among others) having started their own regional events of late after playing in the Texas Football Classic. The 2008 lineup is again five games in three days, with Georgetown vs. San Antonio Southwest, San Antonio Reagan vs. Katy Cinco Ranch, Lake Travis vs. Round Rock Westwood, Port Lavaca Calhoun vs. Mercedes and Brownwood vs. Burnet.

August 30

Katy at Galena Park North Shore

Notes: Not only one of the biggest Class 5A games of the season, but between Houston powers can it get any bigger? Expect this game to have a strong chance of moving to Thursday night and to kickoff the FSN Southwest Dodge Game of the Week slate.

August 30

H-E-B Heart of Texas Kickoff Classic, Waco

Notes: The one-day event hosted by the Waco ISD will include Waco vs. Stephenville, Waco University vs. Houston Crosby and Ennis vs. Belton. No more Chad Morris on the sideline for Stephenville.

August 30

Tom Landry Classic, Dallas

SMU's Ford Stadium hosted Southlake Carroll vs. Miami Northwestern in the record-setting 2007 Clash of Champions, and the Dragons will return to the Hilltop in 2008. The one-day doubleheader will be Southlake Carroll vs. Plano West and Highland Park vs. Aledo.

September 11

Wichita Falls Rider vs. Sulphur Springs

The family of networks at ESPN, thanks to Paragon Marketing Group, will showcase the multi-talented Tyrik Rollison at Sulphur Springs against Rider's Shevodrick Beaver. A recruiting nut's dream matchup.

September 19

Euless Trinity at Allen

One of the top matchups in the DFW area coming before Allen has a suitable home for the thousands of fans who will want to swarm to this game.

September 27

Galena Park North Shore at Southlake Carroll

The Dragons were set with another top Florida opponent for the second straight season before landing North Shore to close their non-district schedule. One of the best from Dallas meets the same from Houston.

October 4

Weston (Fla.) Cypress Bay at Katy

Notes: Get ready to reserve one of 12,000 tickets at Rhodes Stadium, because they won't last. The defending 5A, Div. II state champions have agreed to host Cypress Bay, which is the largest high school in Florida and one of the biggest in the country with 5,500 students. Cypress Bay is coached by Mark Guandolo, who has brought two previous teams: Miami Southridge (vs. Dallas Carter in 1997) and Chaminade-Madonna (vs. Tyler Lee in 2005) to Texas soil. Located just west of Fort Lauderdale, 6A Cypress Bay is coming off a 10-2 season and is only six years old. Look for a classic physical battle of ground games, and an official announcement in the coming weeks.

Worth A Mention

The defending national champions, 6A Miami Northwestern, will host Long Beach Poly at FIU Stadium on August 30, in the finale of a two-day, three-game event showcasing Florida high school football … Defending 5A, Div. I state champion Euless Trinity and 2006 5A, Div. I state champion Cedar Hill are among a handful of DFW-area high schools committed to participate in a season-opening event at Texas Stadium, but their opponents may not be finalized until March. Foes are likely to come in from Oklahoma; Long Beach Poly was a prime target but was seized for a bigger stage in Miami … The toughest schedule in Texas may go to Flower Mound Marcus, which will play Grapevine, Plano West, Fossil Ridge and out-of-towners Tyler Lee and Katy (in Waco) to complete non-district play. The league slate has Coppell, Lewisville, Hebron, Flower Mound and Southlake Carroll.
