We could stand for a few of them to be recognized days, but not Holidays. There’s also been talk about businesses rotating the Holidays… these four this year, those four next year, etc. I don’t think Trump spoke out of turn- I think he was whistling at a group of his supporters who aren’t happy that the last two federal holidays were gifts to the African American Community. But he’s not alone- I had a black co-worker make the argument only black people should have Juneteenth off, lol. Fanning the fires of racism never goes out of style, I guess. 5GallonBucket, baddog and thetragichippy 3 Quote

Something I found: The 11 federal holidays in the U.S. are: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. While these are designated as federal holidays, private employers are not legally required to offer paid time off for them. Here's a more detailed breakdown: New Year's Day: January 1st. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday: The third Monday in January. Washington's Birthday: The third Monday in February, often referred to as President's Day. Memorial Day: The last Monday in May. Juneteenth: June 19th. Independence Day: July 4th. Labor Day: The first Monday in September. Columbus Day: The second Monday in October, also often observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day. Veterans Day: November 11th. Thanksgiving Day: The fourth Thursday in November. Christmas Day: December 25th. Where I worked, we had “Good Friday” paid off. Also, we got the eves off for Christmas and New Years. Quote

White folks hid the Proclamation from their slaves for two years in Texas. I support your black co-worker’s point of view. It’s not racist, it’s rightfully po’d. Quote

President Lincoln emancipated the slaves in states that had already left the Union. That proclamation made as much weight in the Confederate States as one from the King of England would have. It’s also laughable to wrongly say “Lincoln freed the slaves” when the ones that existed in the United States (The North, at that point) weren’t freed until after the civil war ended. Personally? I think that Juneteenth is a great day for all Americans to celebrate. I’m not convinced MLK day is quite as justified, and I don’t know why we celebrate Columbus Day at all. But to follow your logic, Non-Christians should be forced to work on Christmas. Should ALL black people be allowed the day off on Juneteenth, or just the descendants of slaves? Because I’d be mad if some dude from Somalia who arrived stateside in 2018 gets the day off when I’ve had to listen to racist bull my entire life. Quote

National holidays should be for all. You don’t think Texas had newspapers? Slaves couldn’t read. Slaveholders could. Quote
baddog Posted Friday at 06:26 PM Report Posted Friday at 06:26 PM How could anybody know all slave owners could read? What about the Choctaw slaves? Could Choctaws read English? I have read they were the last to release their slaves. CW, Columbus Day was created so banks could enjoy another day to close. Ask Hippy. Lol Quote

He said that everyone was summoned to the main residence, helped prepare a big meal, then their former owner announced that they were free. Welcome to stay, but free to go. The man said that his family left the same day and traveled as far as they could, then realized that they had no money or food… it wasn’t easy. I think it’s a very worthy day for us to celebrate. I can't believe that your coworker said that. I think Texas was the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. Some employers have floating holidays meaning that they recognize all of them but you can chose which ones you want to take off, up to a certain number Quote
