Found this in the Baytown Sun Today is a special one for the basketball program at Barbers Hill. Yes, it is the first day of the annual Gulf Coast Classic, which makes it a gold standard day for area hoops fans. But today is also when the school will unveil its remodeled field house. The event will be marked with a ribbon cutting at 5:45 p.m., and then at 6:30, the Lady Eagles will take on Nederland in the first game on the new court. Following that game around 8 p.m., the Barbers Hill boys will battle Caney Creek in a regular season contest. The Eagles aren’t playing in the tournament. According to BH athletic director Don Price, the extensive renovations to the field house carries a price tag of around $1.5 million. But anyone attending today’s ribbon-cutting and/or games will be able to see firsthand that it was money well-spent. “Anytime we need to build something or upgrade, the community will come together and do whatever is needed to get it done,†Price said. “If it’s for the school they’re for it. I haven’t been in many communities like that.†On the home side of the court, reclining chairback seats, have been added. Plus, bleachers have been added to the upstairs portion of the gymnasium, increasing the seating from 1,500 to 2,000. In addition, upstairs restrooms have been renovated, as well as the boys and girls locker rooms, and an elevator has been added to bring the facility under compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Downstairs, the foyer and concession area has been expanded and new restrooms have been built. The court has also been redone and graphics added, and new lighting and a P.A. system have been added. The Gulf Coast Classic will start play today at 9:30 a.m. and games will be held at three additional sites: the competition gym at the high school, the auxiliary gym at the high school and the middle school gymnasium. This year’s tournament will bring 27 out-of-town teams to Mont Belvieu. Even though there will be teams from as far away as Port Arthur, Nederland, La Marque and Needville, the GCC will still have a local flavor as the Sterling girls, Crosby girls, Anahuac boys and Dayton boys are all slated to compete. The tournament will run through Saturday evening, with the championship games set for 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys.

St. Thomas More of Louisiana opened an 11 point lead after the first quarter enroute to a 66-46 rout of Barbers Hill in the second round of the Lee College Classic. Brooks Ybarra lead the Eagles with 15 and Micah Moore had 11. Barbers Hill will be paired against district opponent Crosby who lost to Lafayette La. 63-60 for the 3rd place game Saturday at 6:30.
