  1. Newton overall right now I would give a B.

    Offence has a A- as we are doing most things well. Still room for improvement.

    Defence has a C+. Not making adjustments during game.IMO not kids problem.

    Special teams B. Kick coverage needs improvement. Giving up too many yards.

    Kids efforts A++.

    Newton just needs a few more games like last night against Silsbee to hone their edge for the playoffs.

  2. Great Game Newton defense played fairly well considering some of the situations they were put in. Newton had some turnovers tonight and the defense only gave up twenty points. Congrats on the win and great job silsbee. The officials missed alot of calls I watched the game live then got home and watched it on fox 4 the offials missed alot of holding calls and the int was not a pick should have been called incomplete the LB from silsbee never has possesion of the ball he was juggling it and then it fell to the ground. Other than that it was a good game.

    IMO the Newton defence is far from being a strength. The inability to defence running plays to the outside as well as broken coverages in the secondary is not what I call great defence. The defence is slow to adjust to what the offense is doing in the game. Got to get better before playoffs. Officials are a part of the game every week. If you look at it from the Silsbee view they missed a number of blocking in the back calls on Newton. Silsbee done a great job of keeping our team guessing all night on both sides of the ball. Exciting game. My compliments to all the kids involved from both towns.

  4. Barbay and Hooks both have over 30 years of "inherited" players and success? This is not even worth thinking about. The only thing for sure is their year in and year out success. Football programs are not only ran during the fall season. They are year round. They start at an early age and continue until they are seniors. Knowing the x's and o's counts, but getting kids to put their heart into playing for you counts more. If you cannot get that play from them, all the x's and o's in the world won't help you.

  5. Maybe the coaching staffs of each team have different goals for the season. Do you want your team playing their best football before district play even gets here? Would you want to be improving as the playoffs near? Could they be searching through personnel as well as approaches to situations with calling certain plays? Not every game should be approached with a win at all cost mentality. IMO a team should be coached for the district crown and the playoffs, and maybe that is what was happening Friday night. No one seems to have taken this into consideration.

  6. I am going to go out on a limb on this one and say another 62 to 21 with the Eagles kicking some serious butt!   ;D

    THATS RIGHT, last time I said Newton would win by 21 the final was 62 to 21 . Don't forget Silsbee D allowed 49 when they played Diboll, Newton shut diboll down the only reason they scored 21 was because Newton's 2nd team D was in half way through the 3rd qrt . (if U know Barby, he doesn't like to run up the score)

    Didn't Diboll lead 14-13 in the 1qt, and score on their opening possesion in the second half. Newtons D was outstanding, but all of Dibolls points where against the 1st string D.Diboll put the 2nd string offense on the field in the 3rd because the game was well out of reach. IMO Newton is the best all around team Diboll has faced, but I assure you their secondary will be tested next Friday night.

    I agree 100%

  7. Coach Barbay coached two years at Bishop Byrne(I believe) then came to Newton as backfield coach under Lidney Thompson in 1968. He was hired as head coach in 1975. The offseason program is one of the true strengths of Newton's football success. It takes athletes and makes better athletes out of them. Of course how you use those athletes during the season is the true genius of Barbay and Hooks.

  9. EC took a delay penalty to punt, then Newton was offside on defence and EC declined the penalty. They were not near kicking into the endzone. That one didn't make sense to me. Newton's defence appears to be struggling. EC broke several long runs off tackle as well as QB draws up the middle.

    There defense did just fine they held EC to only 150 yards and only like 25 in the second half fella they will be just fine as the season continues

    I sense a bit of a animosity. I believe as the season goes on the defence will continue to be a weak point. When the Eagles face an opponent with a strong offense, the defence is gonna give up a lot of points. Now whether the Eagles win or lose will depend on how many points the offense can match and surpass. Just my opinion.
