1. I can point this out time and again

Name        Position(s)          Grade        Starter/Reserve on 2010 State Runner Up Team
Tucker      1B & Pitcher          12              Starter
Franklin    3B & Pitcher          12              Starter
Nichols    C & Pitcher            12              Starter
Potts        SS & Pitcher          12              Starter
Harvey    RF, 3B & Pitcher    12              Starter
Gore        C                          12              Reserve
Swift      1B & Pitcher          12              Reserve
Murphy    OF & Pitcher          11              Reserve
Hawthorne  LF                      11              Reserve
Taylor      C & OF                  11              Reserve
Franklin    SS & Pitcher          11              Reserve
Williams  2B                        10              Reserve

Others on the Rebel Roster
Midkiff    1B                        11              JV
Jackson    OF                        11              JV
and there might be a couple of surprises once the Rebels finish up basketball. Coach Williams says that there will be plenty of competition for starting positions once the full squad is out for practice.

5 starters and 7 reserves coming back from the State Runner up team. That is why the Rebels are at #1 in the coaches preseason poll and now you have names to go along with the polling.

AAW
You best have a large bottle of water with you if you are going to broadcast both games back to back!

I will have several bottles of water. ;) Been there, done that. ;D

This should be a lot of fun!!

Wish the triple header down @ Lamar could get broadcast that should be should be fun too!
3. Wow, baseball fans might be even more testy than football fans. Yes I am from Evadale and I believe that the Rebels will make another deep run in the playoffs and I hope they bring the State Champion trophy home with them this year. But for the record I hope all 5 of the state trophies come come from Austin/Round Rock in the hands of SETX teams.

I was in Round Rock last year and I know how exciting that it was to win the semi final and how heart breaking it was to lose the championship game. The Rebels have plenty of returnes off that team and have been on a mission this year to win as many games as they could. They won the school's first playoff game in many years in football, they will play in the area round in basketball in a week and they have lofty goals for the baseball season.

I don't know nor do I care if the Rebels can beat BC, WOS or for that matter WB. Last I checked we just have to beat 1A schools to win our district, area, region and state. So since the question is who do you see going the farthest in baseball I will still say Evadale and Brenham, but I will also say, I hope that all the trophies come home to roost in SETX country!
4. I was not at the game last night, so I can't speak with authority about what happened on the court, but I can say one thing for sure. Leggett likely has a good team, but they are at the end of their first season. It is a basketball only school that got to start basketball of season the first day of school, while the Rebels have been through a preschool football workouts and a 13 week season and playoffs before they hung up the pads and headed for the gym.

I am so proud of this group of players, everyone of them has been practicing and playing since August 1st. How many of us would even care to match up with the hours and hours of practice, close to 50 games (football & basketball) and the hours of bus rides. I believe that this team will be just fine. They have two more games to close out district play. They win on Friday and they claim the district crown. These players have brought the program back from some of its lowest points so just keep on coming to the games, cheering your lungs out and watch what is sure to be a great show from here on out.

Go get em Rebels!
5. The SP coach tried the strategy of placing a man to man on #3 Devon Murphy and playing a 2-2 zone with the rest of his team during most of the first half. I have not seen the stats but I know it held #3 to not too many points in the half, but it exposed the middle to Dunigan, Stark and Tucker and they did the damage in the before intermission.

It was a complete game including a shut down defensive effort allowing only 2 points in the second quarter for the Sharks. Coach L has the team making adjustments and shuffling personnel to keep the team fresh. With three games left and 2 district games (Big Sandy & West Hardin) and 1 against Leggett I believe that the Rebels will win out and take the district crown. Once that is done then it will be up to the team to take the next step and elevate their play for the playoffs. I see great things in store for this team and they have worked hard to position themselves for a run.

Several members of this team have been on varsity since they were freshmen. They went from only winning a couple of games all the way to where they are now. Evadale basketball once was a powerhouse that got noticed. It seems that those days have come back.

Just to let people know they the Rebels are here to stay, the Rebels will graduate 6 seniors but they have the following coming back for 2011-2012. Murphy leading scoring (starter), Brandon Bruce - point guard (starter), Shawn Totten - wing/guard (starter), Kyle Taylor - post, Brandon Burford - guard plus several guys on the JV that will fill the holes nicely next season. So the Rebels will just reload next season, not rebuild.

6. I agree with Mo! This thing is getting less and less enjoyable as we have to be subjected to the "my dogs bigger than your dog!' stuff. I admit that I brag about the Rebels. If I didn't I don't think I would be a very good fan. But I respect and admire the schools, coaches, players and students from every school, in our district to 5A in the area. I will root for any SETX team that is in the playoffs right up to the game they happen to play Evadale. The better SETX does the better for all of us. I ma proud of the players that signed letters of intent and guess what there was not a single Evadale player signed.

This has been a great year for Evadale in sports. We have a volleyball district championship, a football area championship, a girls basketball championship, tied for the lead in district boys basketball and have the #1 ranking in the preseason baseball coaches poll. Those are facts. But next year anyone of those or all of those could change, and eventually will. We need to look at the things that make us better and this school year we have had our share. The situations at WOS and Newton where death marked the season of two proud programs and the outpouring of support that was shown by all of SETX. Take a look a Chester with a declining enrollment swithing to 6 man football and their basketball team that is having a difficult year to put it mildly and yet they still compete each and every game. I am sure that if you look there are plenty of other stories that would make anyone proud of the student athletes of SETX.

Lets just remember that the players on the other bench belong to a mother or dad, just like the kids from our school. That the fans on the other side are just a passionate and escited about their team as we are about ours. And if you want something sobering to think about the kids and fans from a nearby rival school could end up being on your side if the situation with school finances does not change course. There might be a whole bunch of dashes appearing bewteen the names of school if they are forced to consolidate or the name of your school might just cease to exist. It is more likely than we would like to think and then those teams and fans that you were railing against will be sitting on the bench right beside your kids and then this process will start all over again as we pick out another school or schools to turn our anger against.

7. I agree with xsv.
Fans will support their team. That is the way it supposed to be. When I post I try to support what I say with facts (too many sometimes, I will admit). I have had two sons go through Evadale with my last graduating this year. I talk to the coaches, attend the games and even write for a couple of local papers. I love the rivalries that we have. We have just as much fun at some of our games as they do at Midcounty Madness. We are as passionate as the fans at WOS, West Brook or any other school. We love our kids and their school.

Rankings are fun and something to brag about, but it is all about doing the work on the field, court, diamond, track, stage, or whereever. Our kids are competing in everything for everything and against everybody. Winning is great and everyone loves it when their team comes out on top. But parents don't (or shouldn't) love their kids any less if their team never wins a game.

So here is my advice. Cheer loud, be proud, support your school, but love and support your kids more!
8. Last nights game give the Rebels the first half lead in district play at 4-0. Big Sandy is 2nd with a 3-1 record and the other three teams are all 1-3.

The Rebels are clearly the best team in the district as they won both games this week including the game at Big Sandy easily. The team is meshing together and Coach Williams has them performing at a very high level. The thing that is most impressing me about the teams play is how different players are stepping up on any given night suppling the offense. The inside game with Tucker, Dunigan and Stark is really beginning to excell and if you pack it in then you leave Murphy open for the 3's.

The defense is becoming the forse that most in Evadale thought it would be at the beginning of the season. Only one team scored more than 40 and it looks to me that the Rebels clamp down more and more as the game wears on. The Oilers scored less than 15 in the second half of the game. The speed, the height and the reach as well as the pressure are making it more and more difficult doe opponents to even get clean looks much less points.

The second half begins on Tuesday at HD and all four of the teams in district will do their best to stop the Rebel Express, but from the looks of it they will be battling for 2nd and 3rd in the race. Keep the petal to the metal Rebels!

Not being able to beat an upper classification team means you aren't better than that team.
The point is we do not get the opportunity to even try, since no 5A will ever schedule a 1A team. But each classification has to beat who they are in the class with. The teams in AA or AAA ball never get to play in the MLB World Series, but they get to compete for the championship of their league. We are 1A and being the best 1A is what we shoot for.

Now for a final question is being the state champion in 1A better than being a district champion in any other class that gets knocked out short of the state title? Just a question.
10. Just wanted to remind SETX that the Evadale Catfish Festival will be sponsoring All Star games for every classification in May.

Thursday, May 12 - 4A/5A girls and guys 6 & 7:30 PM
Friday, May 13 -2A/3A girls and guys 6 & 7:30 PM
Saturday, May 14 - 1A girls & guys 2 & 3:30 PM

Players from throughout the SETX area will be invited as the festival will make contact with each and every school in the area asking coaches to nominate players to play in the games. We believe that this will give our seniors that one last opportunity to put on their school uniform and play against and with the players that they have faced on the court since junior high and some even earlier.

If you would like to let us know about the seniors on your team that you believe should be All Stars feel free to give us their names. There are reasons why some can not play as they might still be involved in baseball, softball or track, but we want this to be one of the premier events in the area. I can assure you that these are very enjoyable games that are exciting from beginning to end. Some of the players will likely have the opportunity to continue playing at the next level, but for some all that will be left is pick up games. Lets give these athletes who gave us so much one last chance to shine on the hardwood.

Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the games for $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. The money raised will go to the Evadale Catfish Festival scholarship fund so you can be assured that this is a worthwhile endeavor. We will be sending out nomination forms to the schools after the conclusion of the basketball season and athletes will be contacted in April about participating.

We invite everyone to come to the games and cheer on their school's players and we also invite you to enjoy the "biggest little festival in Southeast Texas...the Evadale Catfish Festival!"
11. Looking forward to some great games tonight in the Rebel Gym.

Wanted to remind everyone that the half time half court split the pot shots come back tonight! The money will go to the Evadale Catfish Festival scholarship fund. In three years the Catfish Festival has given out $5500 in scholarship money to 6 different Evadale seniors and this year the Festival wants to add more money and students to the growing list.

$1 gets your name in the pot and we will draw a name at half time of each of the four games tonight. The person selected will go to mid court and have the chance to shot from mid court for a chance to split the pot with the festival. Buy as many tickets as you can, because the scholarship fund needs your support!

Oh and don't forget that this year the Catfish Festival is May 12-14!
12. Well there is only one preseason #1 state ranked team in the area and it was done by coaches who know alot more about the game than most of of course that team is the Evadale Rebels!

They also were the last team playing in the area last year as well. Can they beat a 5A or a 4A team, well they would have to play to know for a fact, but since they will only have to face 1A teams in a run back to Austin (Round Rock actually) then want does not being able to beat an upper classicacation school mean really?

I would agree with True Blue on the issue of the spread in games when the real thing is the "W". We have a solid, talented team that can fill it up on any given night. Against SP Murphy had 29 points including 7 of 10 3's. Once the inside out gets going then the Rebels are hard to stop. Stay packed in the zone and Murphy lights you up. Come out and open up the paint for Stark, Dunigan and Tucker.

Pick your poison?

Only now are the number of practices and the number of games beginning to even out. I have watched the team get better as they have been able to incorporate things that they have finally been able to practice into the game plan. I believe that most of the problems that the Rebels have had with turn overs are getting better and the team is vastly improved from where they were at the beginning of the season. This is an experienced team that can make some noise in the playoffs if they continue to listen to Coach Williams and improve in areas that spring up in the final 6 games of district play.

Could be a very nice run for the Rebels this post season!
I called this one pretty good about picking your poison. The big three (Tucker, Dunigan and Stark) were huge last night @ BS. The Wildcats did a good job on Murphy, but that opened up the bigs. Don't have the stats, but they were impressive in a 72-37 win. I was most impressed however with the defense as the Rebels did not allow the Wildcats to score 10 points in all but one quarter and the Wildcats did not score until about 3:40 left in the first quarter. Have to hand if to Bruce at the point as well. He was a force last night as he controlled the tempo for the Rebels and got things started. It was a very solid win that made a statement that should be loud and clear!
14. I want every team in the district to be better in 2011! Think about it folks what is the one thing that we hear about every sport? WEAK DISTRICT! Maybe it is just the fact that we share a forum with schools from all classifications, but all we hear about is the WEAK DISTRICT stuff. Now maybe it only comes up when Evadale is winning, but I would suspect that it would not matter who was the dominate team it has become a perception that can only be changed by the district doing better.

I want every team in the district to win all their non-district games. I want them to battle in close games throughout the district schedule. I want all three playoff teams to make noise in the playoffs, just to see if it will change the perspective of a WEAK DISTRICT.

Now I still want the Rebels to win, I'm a fan of course, but we are all served if the entire district is respected as a powerhouse!
15. The Rebels have dominated the baseball race for many years. They have not lost a district game in four years if I recall. While in other sports there seems to be a changing of the guard from time to time, but in baseball it has been the Rebels beyond a shadow of doubt.

The group of seniors that are on the team this year won district and an area round of the playoffs as freshmen, they won district and lost in the regional semi final as juniors and won district, area, regionals and a state final before falling in the championship game. If you add all the playoff games up these seniors have played almost another entire season of games in the playoffs.

You have two time All State - Tyler Tucker @ 1st and pitching not to mention his bat
Billy Nichols will be in his forth year behind the plate with a great percentage of gunning down base runners - All District 3 years
Chase Flanklin @ 3rd and pitching and a bat to produce plenty of runs for the Rebels - All District 3 years
Dustin Potts @ Short Stop with a boat load of stollen bases - All District 2 years
Chris Harvey in Right Field - hottest bat in last years playoffs and plenty of plays in the field - All District 2 years
All five of these were starters on the state runner up team and they are ready to finish the job.

Plenty of guys to fill in the blanks
Outfield - Tanner Hawthorne
Catcher - Wesley Gore
1st Base - Josh Swift (can pitch too)
2nd Base - Wes Williams
Short Stop - Devon Murphy (can pitch too)
Short Stop - Bradien Franklin (can pitch too - knuckeballer)
Catcher - Kyle Taylor
Plus plenty of JV players from the only 1A team in the area that has a JV team.

The outfield will likely have some of the players listed above moving into those sports to get them on the field as well as filling the holes. So until we get the chance to see the Rebels in action they are the defending 1A State Runner Up, the defending regional champion, the defending area champion and the defending district champion. Prove what you can do on the field and if you beat the Rebels then you will earn their respect, until then it is the Rebels championship until someone wrestles it away from them.
16. I would agree with True Blue on the issue of the spread in games when the real thing is the "W". We have a solid, talented team that can fill it up on any given night. 17. I believe that this thread has come full circle. The Rebels are now in district play as are every other school. Except for the possibility of a warm up game before the start of the playoffs nobody gets to play anyone other than the schools in their district.

I wish every team that has played the Rebels this pre season (non-district) well. I believe that the Rebels will benefit from each and every game they have played win or loose. There is not much that they will see that they have not already seen from teams with size to teams with speed to teams with pressure defense to teams that have a solid zone. Each and every game was just another trip to the chalkbaord and another opportunity to learn. I believe that the Rebels also shared some lessons with some of the teams they played.

Iron sharpens iron! The Rebels compeated well against almost every team they faced to this point and with continued growth and improvement the Rebels should be fine in district play (2-0 to start is as good as they can do) and into the playoffs.

This thread has run its course and I say lets just look forward to the next game and the remainder of the district schedule. What do say?
18. The Shark Tank is very impressive! Very spacious, lighting is great, nice seats great design with the lobby serving both the gym and the auditorium and hopefully high enough to withstand any title surges that might occur in the future. I also liked the covered parking under the structure.

The Sharks are having an off year this year both the girls and the boys, but I will say this that I never saw them quit. Both game were lopsided in the Rebels favor, but the players continued to scrap and claw for what they could get.

Thanks for the game and we will see you in Evadale in a couple of weeks.
