I can't believe that WO-S ain't on that list somewhere. Just don't seem right. -

Ok, no one else will say it, so I will. What the heck are Silsbee people doing on a public message board making defamatory assumptions about a school district that they have absolutely no clue about? I have a child who will be a senior this year and I can give you an EDUCATED opinion that the school is far more concerned about academics than they are athletics and more specifically, football. In fact, the principle, who is a detriment to the school, does nothing to help athletics and does more to hurt them. He is the same guy who has been there for at least 6 years and is not on the same page with anyone. Coaches, teachers or students. As for your assumptions that, because WO-S is still successful in FOOTBALL, that they are only concerned with athletics. A healthy academic environment goes hand in hand with a healthy athletic program... See South Lake Carol, Katy, Austin West Lake and WO-S in the 80's. The list goes on and on. The only reason that the WO-S "perception" is what it is, is because people make assonine assumptions about it in public or they are jealous because the program or coach gets more attention then their precious local bowl game. That's the fault of the local media, not WO-S or it's coach. Some of these statements are freakin ridiculous. As for the "mystery" behind our students compared to our population (as compared to Silsbee's). Silsbee has 6,300 people and one highschool with 840 people. Since the world revolves around Silsbee, I'll guess that the standard is that any town should average 840 students per 6,300 people. Orange has 3 highschools. WO-S @ 717, LCM @ 1,160 and Orangefield @ 515. This is a total of 2,392 students. 2,392/840= 2.85. 2.85 X 6,300= 17,955 people. Don't want any of you trying to dig up hidden students or anything or blowing a fuse trying to figure the population mystery out. Next thing you know is that we will be trying to sandbag our enrollment to gain an advantage in football. The bottom line is that WO-S is still successful in football because of great coaching and hard work. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a football factory that farts out super human athletes that do not have to pass and have only one purpose and that is to play football. However, football is the one bright spot at a school riddled with problems that the community and students can cling to. If things don't get turned around in a hurry, those people who still believe and work their asses off will be gone and you just watch how fast that last bright spot falls into shambles. THE LAST thing this school needs are uneducated people going into a public forum and dragging the efforts of so many through the mud even more. Get your facts right or stay out of it.

Nederland vs WOS Week 0!!! Your Thoughts....
Gasilla replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Let's not forget DT Jacory roberts who has been on the D line since his Sophomore year and also DT Brandon Arnold. I've also got wind their may be a move in that could really shore up the line, but that's just a rumor and you know how that goes. Either way, Cook, roberts, Arnold and Lynch all have good size and quickness. This could be the best defensive front that WO-S has seen since the 2000 team. Look for this years run defense to be lights out. As for the game, I think Nederland may match up well with their passing game since they have a proven QB and a proven receiving core. They will not be able to make a living running the ball (IMO). The key will be for the inexperienced line to protect the QB because the WO-S front will be big, strong and very quick. -
I wonder the same thing.

While I agree that the leadership at the school is terrible, let's get something clear. WO-S has never, ever, had 2,000 students. The most the school has had was a little over 1,400 and that was when the 2 schools first combined. In 1986 we had around 1,200.

Soccer style or straight on? One thing I do know about the Sparrow kid is he is an outstanding athlete! I've seen him play baseball and he is one of the best baseball players his age in Orange.

Anyone getting new uniforms this year?
Gasilla replied to Bobcatfan4life's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I wish WO-S would. The ones they have are several years old and are not in real good shape. -
What the heck does that have to do with politics? This is a moronic statement! All of the kids that start, who went to Sam, has more to do with the fact that he is a GREAT coach and the kids he has taught know what they are doing. I've coached kids who go to Sam and they are very well prepared and you can definitely see a difference between them and the players who only go to practice and that's it. Don't be pissed because you will not spend the coin to give your kid the best chance to succeed. One more thing... why has this conversation turned to Sam? These are completely different circumstances. Sam left on his own, Bryant has been reassigned. Let's not drag people into this issue that don't deserve to be there.

This was emailed to me today from an old friend, it's a pretty cool story... Since I am sending this to so many of you, I feel I need to set this story up. Some of you may be unaware of what glorious event took place last Saturday at Texas Stadium, and for those who already know what happened, I'm sure you will enjoy reading this again. I'll try to be brief: On Saturday, Abilene High took down the mighty Southlake Carroll Dragons in the playoffs at Texas Stadium. I was lucky enough to witness this historic event. It was a close game and came down to the wire. With 10 seconds to go and Abilene up by just one point, Southlake had the ball on the Abilene 10-yard line with the clock running. Southlake's starting QB got hurt in the first half and so the backup QB was playing (and he played well the whole game). All Southlake had to do was kill the clock and kick a very short field goal to win the game. However, as the backup took the snap from the center, he fumbled the snap and AHS recovered, and thus won the game. While I was extremely glad to see the arrogant Carroll team lose, I did feel sorry for this poor high school kid who fumbled away the game. So last night, I was talking to my parents on the phone. My dad's boss, Gary Galbraith of American State Bank in Abilene , is the brother of Gerald Galbraith, who runs the A.G. Edwards Investments branch in Abilene . The person who runs the A.G. Edwards branch in Southlake happens to be the father of the backup QB, and this is how my dad came to tell me the following story. Sunday afternoon (remember, the Cowboys played on Thursday night so they were off this weekend) the phone rings at the backup QB's house in Southlake. The father answers. The voice on the other end of the line says, "Hi, this is Tony Romo, and I was wondering if I could speak to your son." Tony went on to tell this kid that he knew what he was going through because he too had dropped a snap in a playoff game against the Seahawks. He told him that there would be other games and to keep his head up and to allow this event to make him a stronger person. He told him to come back next year and have the same kind of year at Southlake Carroll that the Cowboys are having this year following their unexpected playoff loss. I still hate Southlake, and I'm glad they lost. But I have to remind myself that this is a 17-yr-old kid with the weight of a tradition-rich program on his shoulders. And to think...Romo nearly lost his roster spot to Quincy Carter! H. Allen Botkin, PGA Abilene Country Club 4039 South Treadaway Blvd. Abilene, TX 79602

La Vega vs. China Spring/CHINA SPRINGS WIN
Gasilla replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
td, his wife and their children are Mustangs to the core. He just doesn't like all the hell the current OC gets. He doesn't have anything against Toby either. He knows Toby is a good coach and good with the kids. -
I remember us scrimmaging them in the late 90's. I've often wondered why we did not play them in a real game. Lot's of teams in SW LA with some talent. Should be a good challenge for us. If I'm not mistaken, Sulphur went a few rounds deep this year in the LA playoffs.

EXTRA POINTS AND 4th QUARTER PLAY CALLING FOR WOS
Gasilla replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I think that the guy who kicked this year has plenty of ability to do the job. I'm just not real sure how much coaching he gets at practice. He may get a lot, I don't know. I do know that you don't see any toe punchers at the college or pro level. They have been extinct for several years. "kicker" has offered his assistance in working with #11. I think "kicker" could teach him to kick soccer style as he is self taught. "kicker" has also kicked in college, semi-pro as well as arena football. I really think he can help this kid be more accurate. He already has a really strong leg and is dripping with athleticism, so I think he could be a great one. I just hope that Hooks will take him up on his offer... It can't hurt. -
OK if you are going to pick a team you know nothing about at least get their name right. It's La Vega. Don't be hatin just because the Tigers didn't make the playoffs... Their time will come and when it does, we will pull for them. I'll say this just like I did before the Giddings game. It's not about who they have and what they do, it's about what WE have and what WE do. Play Mustang football for 48 mintues and we will be OK.
-
Thank for the suport owl!!!
-
I don't know about better, just different. They like to run the power sweep and let the running backs make cuts up the field. Giddings uses a lot of misdirection and trickery. I think our quickness will benefit us against LV where it is used against us at times against Giddings with over pursuit. I'm sure they will get their yards, but the final score is all that matters and I'm certain they have not faced a defense (or offense) like that of the Stangs.

22-4A FINALLY! GETS THE BETTER OF 23-4a!
Gasilla replied to PURPLE 4EVER's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It's great to see 2 reps from both the local 4A and 3A districts still rolling!! SETX has always held our own, good to see us besting 23-4A and 23-3A. It's not the first time though, back in 99 PNG ousted LM on their way to the state title. Then in 00, WO-S beat both DII reps from that district, Friendswood and LM in back to back weeks. -

Way to go Raiders!!! Man, you guys have taken a bunch of grief over the last couple of seasons. Way to believe in your team!! Good luck and keep on pluggin away!! One more thing... that just ain't right making the plpayoffs for the first time and not just winning your first 2 playoff games, but beating LM in the process! We are like 1- 1 million against those guys... Seriously, GREAT JOB!! -
Could WOS and Kirbyville see each other in the playoffs?
Gasilla replied to claytong's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
IF, and I repeat, IF this occurs. The closest it would be would be Dayton. Hooks will not play on grass unless he loses the flip and the opposing coach wants grass. -
Kirbyville 49 Caldwell 28 FINAL/COMMENTS
Gasilla replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Good job Kats!!! One more game and you get your rematch!!! Question... how is it that our district runner up keeps getting runnerups and our champion keeps getting district champions????? WEIRD!! -
You can go over to wacotrib.com and go to sports and read up on most of their games. I've read up on several of their games and, from what I can tell, they are going to be tough. Offensively AND defensively. They are probably not as good running it as Giddings, Giddings was probably the best in the state, but they are pretty dang good. The thing with La Vega though is that they are not one dimensional. As you can see from the stats, they don't throw it a lot, but they are good at it when they do. It also appears he spreads the ball around well including several passes to their backs out of the backfield which we haven't seen much this year. Defensively, they look tough against the run. They held Crocket, a second round opponent to just 40 yards rushing and 121 total yards. Crocket scored 13 points, but one of those was on a kickoff return. They gave up 388 yards to Cameron (in the first round), the majority of that being in the air as well as they only gave up 40 something yards rushing in that one. The Crocket coach commented that they had a very quick defense and could go far. Looks like they are a lot like us. I am confident from reading that they have not played anyone close to Dayton, Bay City or Giddings. The best team they have played so far is China Springs who is in the 3rd round of the 3A playoffs as well. I am also confident they have not faced and offensive line like ours. We may have to go to the air more in this game, but again, I feel like, if we execute and make the most of our opportunities, we will be OK.

I was trying to remember that too... Can anyone help us? I remember him saying it twice and thinking to myself, "I'll remember that"... yeah right!
