I can’t find any full-game film on Lake Creek from this season. They return a lot of big names from last year, as does PNG. Like last year, it’s going to be two well-coached evenly matched teams.
Three things I think we’ll need to win:
(1) Defensive improvements. The defense has been good, and our performance against La Porte had a lot of bright spots. LP showed our weaknesses, and we got good reps against a violent, tough offensive line blocking for fast RBs who don’t go down without sure tackling. LC will be a more balanced offense, and I’d argue more talented than La Porte. We need to get better at outside containment and bringing the runner down at first contact. A single missed tackle is a touchdown for LC.
(2) Avoid turnovers. That’s important for any game, but last year, two of Lake Creek’s four touchdowns came off PNG fumbles.
(3) PNG must dominate time of possession. This was the most important part of us beating them last year. I went back through every play of last year’s game. Here’s some rough numbers:
PNG held the ball 10-ish minutes longer than LC. (28 min vs 18 min). That’s nearly a full quarter more than LC. It gets more interesting: For every 2.5 minutes LC held the ball in a normal “true” drive, they scored one touchdown. [I didn’t count their scoop and score on a PNG fumble because it doesn’t tell us anything about how their offense moved the ball against our defense.]So, that ten minutes extra we held the ball was HUGE for PNG’s win. It might have been the main reason we won.
In fact, our good defense actually didn’t stop them enough to slow their usual scoring rate much. They averaged around 56 points a game before they played us. If those ten extra minutes we held the ball had gone to LC, their offense was on a pace to score between three and four more TDs - or, between 48 and 55 points total.
Obviously, this is based only on one game, but neither team has changed much since then.
What does this tell us? With equal T.O.P., PNG likely loses. Our best defense is LC not touching the ball. They have the advantage in a shootout - frankly, their receivers are faster than ours, their RB is better than ours, and their QB is more than good enough. If we have to win by matching them score for score, we lose control. Our defense is good, but not good enough for our offense to gift LC extra possessions.
The LC QB scrambled quite a bit, with more than several times just barely getting away, including once in the end zone that probably was an un-called touchback or maybe grounding. There was also some blown coverage. PNG's LBs will need to be quicker than they've been so far, and hopefully they will be. But what turned out to be the difference was the blocked field goal.
I'm curious why LC isn't ranked ahead of some of the other top 10 teams; did they lose a lot of starters from last season?

To be accurate, it was agreed before the scrimmage began that varsity would play two live quarters. After the first live quarter ended, Lumberton ended the scrimmage. HF coaches were very confused and a little upset. Wanted to get more work in and get backups in to play.
Quit might be the wrong word to use, but Lumberton did decide to leave the field while HF was getting ready for another quarter.
Yeah, I readily confess that I should have qualified my statement, and put it in quotes, like "per my neighbor", or something similar. My neighbor has two kids attending HF, and he was at the scrimmage, so really I'm just quoting him.
Anyway, it'll be a close game, I'm thinking.

Nederland. Geez ...

Montgomery, I think. But we'll see.

Lumberton may be able to contain BC's QB somewhat better than OF did, and typically Lumberton seems to have hometown refs, and it's tough to have a good game against them at home. But I still can't get it out of my head, them quitting and walking off of the field against HF. I'm going with BC for the win.

Titans are the ranked team, and should easily win the game, homecoming notwithstanding.
If BU's O-line could give #10 a second or two more time, perhaps he'd settle down and be able to put a little more zip on his passes. Otherwise he's accurate enough and he's got a couple of speedy receivers. The team isn't lacking for athletes, just some organization, and a little "fire", as we used to call it.

Last season these two teams met in the playoffs with LC ranked 2nd in 5a-2, and I think PNG was ranked 8th or thereabouts. PNG built a lead and then hung on, intercepting a pass at the end for the win.
At a glance so far, both teams this season seem to have found their game on offense, but still working to get the defense hitting on all cylinders. The PNG defense so far hasn't shown last seasons speed. This game could be another one like the LaPort - PNG game week before last. I'm going with PNG and home field advantage, and perhaps a little improved defense since Laporte.

I've seen it flagged once before last night. In one of the deep round playoff games last season, a band was flagged at a critical time, and it affected the outcome of the game.
In another game last season, where I was in attendance, a band was warned to stop playing, but there was no flag thrown.
I don't know how critical last night's band penalty was, there were so many penalties trading back and forth during that time.

The BU defense deserves a steak dinner. Also good game to #10, #1, #5 on offense. And #8. Hell of a game.

BU QB pulled off his helmet but didn't get an USLC flag? Geez ... this last minute and a half has lasted at least 5 minutes.
Off sides Jaasper ..... 1:31 remaining.

So BU band got in trouble for playing when Jasper has the ball!!!
So that's what that was. They're trading penalties, illegal motion(s) vs USC(s). This is hard to watch, but at least it's a close game.
-
Pretty hard to watch for BU fans, or anybody. Not to take anything away from Jasper's defense, they did their job, but that was some bad play calling right there.
-
Unbelievable. BU has 1st and goal from the 2 yard line and doesn't score.
-
I'm watching on the Jasper station's site, KJAS I think. To quote the announcers, "there's a whole lot of lollygagging going on tonight". BU's QB #10 has much less zip on his passes tonight, but he's hanging in there. BU's #1 is running hard.
Jaspers #19 runs hard also, but he's not getting the ball enough.
The rest of the game so far is pretty slow. Obviously some good athletes out there, but the game is just slow. Overthrown passes, receivers out of bounds, a few penalties, etc. 1:04 left in the 1st half. Jasper is up 7-0.

FBM hasn't been the same since two seasons ago, after the QB and the 7 or 8 D1 defensive players graduated, especially the big DE. Last season the coach spoke about his very young team; and I was thinking they'd give a better showing for RR. But RR finished last season pretty strong I think, even while being eliminated in one of the later playoff rounds. Looks like they're making a statement this season.

Anyone watching this game? What's the score?

Yeah, that's what the LC coach is pretty much saying on his weekly interview broadcast. (I don't have the link handy - I saw it on another forum.) Just paraphrasing here, but he basically says that PNG is just not as physical as last season's team. Besides that he says that PNG only plays their best in the first half. Gave up lots of yards to LaPorte. He ain't worried about home field advantage, heck they've played in "more hostile" places - like the Woodlands, for example. LC already has this Friday's game won, in their minds. PNG had better be on their toes.
