I’m not as up-to-date on Southeast Texas, but I didn’t have to rough tonight so I went to watch Crosby and Friendswood. Crosby being friends Wood was a bit of an upset I believe.

Barbers Hill (14) @ Baytown Sterling (23) - FINAL
Coachbearoso replied to jdawg03's topic in High School Football
As someone who coached at Baytown Sterling for the majority of years from 2007 until 2018, the stories I could tell you about a the incompetence of the Gccisd administration including head principals ( not all of them) ( not the current AD or asst AD because they are real men and leaders) congratulations to the current team and coaches!!!!!! when Herb Minyard was fired, I was warned by one of the best athletic directors in the state ( a great man and friend since 92) that TA was being hired just to up his retirement and he’s going to hurt the team and what little of a program momentum that Herb built by leading the team with OCRich Lucero now in either Hutto or another Austin area team. I told the AD i knew how bad he was but I always felt obligated to help my young athletes so I refuse in to leave so I could protect them. Follow my substack as I will publish the information next week. There is no charge as my mother taught me to just speak the truth. If you wanna send me a personal message, I’ll let you know personally. But there soon to be an investigation against the head Cheese of that district some of his assistant superintendent and some former coaches because when you harm kids charges need to be brought.. oh yeah, they had no problem with destroying my last 15 years of coaching. Some knew what was going on, but I was the only one that fought it and continued to turn it in because I believe in Leviticus where it says if man around you sins and you do nothing, then you harbor his sin. I am not a fan of the Yeshua, I am a follower of Yeshua. There’s a big difference. enjoy the football as I’m on my way to Friendswood to watch Crosby I’mma do some video in a former players that’s going to be put on a Substack. But everything comes out in the wash and there’s a lot of evil in GCCISD that will be exposed. But that athletic Director – – the current one and the assistant ID they are awesome – – and the new set of coaches – – congratulations I got tears in my eyes because so many of the great Sterling kids when I was there – – and there were some great ones. We just miss manage them, and I am a part of it because I was an assistant coach to these idiot, head coaches and coordinators. It’s all gonna come out the wash. Coach Bear -
Toby Foreman/ Killeen Shoemaker
Coachbearoso replied to Coachbearoso's topic in High School Football
I understand completely – – this world of Football and football coaches and hiring a football coaches is really crazy. That’s why I write that newsletter on Substack – – you need to join as I send out three newsletters a week. And encourage comments just like y’all do here on Southeast Texas. I’ve enjoyed being a part of Southeast Texas since I started coaching in Clear Lake in 1984. And especially when I became defense coordinator st Crosby a few years later. I always like the Paul Bunyan like reputation of Toby, and I remembered my hearing stories about him and Coach Hooks from Jerry Stewart at Dayton who brought me up at Clear Lake and who I as a defense coordinator for Crosby battled him a few years in a row before Larry Haynes came to Crosby and fired me. Anyway, just for your information I emailed Coach Foreman this morning early about 530 because knowing him, like me, we’re kind of alike, we’re up early in the morning, especially on game day. And I told him the truth about how well his staff and well his ninth and JV team acted while they were demolishing Waco University.. And of course, he was very thankful of that. He emailed me back and told me some things about his career and how he grew up, you know, with the blood of Southeast Texas in him and he can never, you know, repay all the great people there. I told him about my newsletter cause I think I would love to do a biography of him on ithe newsletter just to let the rest of the world know. I’m starting to get followers all over the United States. A lot of people love to keep up with coaches and the controversy of coaches and whatever. I write about the bad but also about the good because the way our country is going we need great men as coaches to develop the character of these young boys. And they are young boys until they turn 21 in my eyes. And it’s so important to catch them early as my mom would say once a boy turns 14 It’s very hard to change your character. I agree, my mother, a first generation Ukrainian immigrant with a second grade education was so wise. Again, follow me on Substack. It’s called “Fire the coach we deserve better “ pass it around everybody else – – they’re quick reads. Take about 5 to 8 minutes and please comment. And hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll be able to do a expo on Toby – – he definitely is a good one. coachbear -
Good late evening, Southeast Texas Sportz. I try to report back to you from Central Texas letting you know anything that’s pertinent that y’all would have an interest in. Well tonight, Wednesday night I was the sideline judge for the ninth grade and JV of Killeen Shoemaker versus Waco University. The first thing I asked, the coaches from Colleen was if this was the high school where the Head Coach was Toby Foreman. And they laughed and they said yeah do you know him. I said no I’m really never have met him, but he is a legend in Southeast Texas. And I told him how whenever there’s a job opening that his name comes up so what I thought I’d do for y’all always give you a report on his teams because his entire coaching staff was their coaching the teams. They only have 1/9 grade team and a JV team, which is the same for Waco university who got defeated last year by Fort Bend Marshall in Waco – – I was at that game and Marshall destroyed them by about 40. and even though this isn’t a report of their varsity versus Waco university varsity which occurs tomorrow night here in Waco, but I’ll be roughing another game, I think it’s a good gauge when you see the ninth grade in JV match and you can tell a lot about a how a program is run. And seeing the results, Toby foreman is running a great program at killeen shoemaker. in the ninth grade game, Shoemaker won by I believe six or seven touchdowns. I wasn’t paying attention to the scoreboard because it was such a blowout because I was in charge of sideline with the chains. And then in the JV game, it was the same story – – it was even more of a blowout now, being on the sideline, I could see how the kids acted and the professionalism of the coaches. And I reported last week about La Vega, which lost the state championship game to Carthage and how well I thought their coaches acted and the whole mechanics of coaching, which is so important from a coaching point of view. This is what I critique in my Substack, a newsletter. I write on the app Substack it’s called Fire the coach we deserve, I review coaching and coaches high school professional in college. And I do that just based on the evidence that they present during a game or possibly what’s going on during the week. I love the fact that I’m a referee now because I get to be on the field and after spending about 38 years coaching, I know about the mechanics of a good staff being on a good staff and being on a bad staff . Just say that I was just impressed – – maybe even a little more with Shoemaker staff than La Vega. The coaches were very professional, very organized and knew how to push the kids buttons to get them excited in a controlled manner. There were more skirmishes last week when La Vega played China Springs then tonight. In fact, university tried to bow up a couple times because they were getting their ass beat, and their coaches were real quick to make sure their kids stayed in line. So anyway, just because for years I’ve been reading about Toby the legend I thought I would report on his fruits which are his younger teams. I’ll watch the local sports tomorrow night as I should be back home about 10 and watch highlights. all right man I’ll always love the Sports Talk. That’s why I’m doing that Substack newsletter and it’s free if you wanna join. I started this week. Central Texas also is big-time football. The only difference is it is not as hot and humid. It’s a little hot but in the evenings, it cools off nice. Y’all have a good one. Enjoy this weekend’s football. Coach Bear I am tired and I’m doing voice to text and I’m not gonna go back through and correct my freaking grammar

Waco La Vega (44) @ West Orange-Stark (20) - FINAL
Coachbearoso replied to jdawg03's topic in High School Football
Just curious, did Craig McGallion retire? Voice to text so will be some problems. I played against him in 77 when Silsbee beat us Marlin in the second round. I know we played at U of H with a good friend of mine Todd Schoppe, who was all American and then Coach that Crosby Clear Lake with me when Jerry Stewart was the head coach. But I know the medallion family is big and Silsby and he’s my age just makes him 64. Maybe he retired. Of course I’m roughing but my hometown Marlin looks poorly. Coach and I already had someone approach me, I was the runner up in 2010 when they gave it to Willis out of Waco University and it was a train wreck. After Jerry Malone got fired Marlin‘s gone downhill. Anyway, I’m just checking on Craig – – very good guy and I met one time, his brother Bubba McGallion -
Waco La Vega (44) @ West Orange-Stark (20) - FINAL
Coachbearoso replied to jdawg03's topic in High School Football
Sorry about the loss West Orange Stark. From central Texas with a report on La Vega since they were an old jr high rival for us Marlin Bulldogs. I now live 10 from the school and watched a couple of practices during 2 a days. Met their HC, Coach Hyde I believe is his name , this summer at 2 a days and congratulated him on last year. They played Carthage very well last year at Jerry World for the state championship. He shrugged and said we gotta play better, kids and coaches got to work harder. On Thursday I reffed a quadruple header at La Vega versus solid football program China Spring, a recent state champ. China Spring is like Waco s version of PNG. La Vega easily won 7B ( I was only ref of my crew arrived at 4:30, 3 Pirate varsity assistant coaches put on stripe shirt and help me ref. The HC and coordinators were there also ( supposedly there were fights a year ago because of a big rivalry and hatred btw the 2 . I was the head line judge but at Coach Hyde s request the chain crew were on the home side. So I got to witness their junior high and varsity staff in action. They had five – – maybe six junior high coaches, and I critique coaches, so I’ll payed close attention to their demeanor. Their kids were discipline and disciplined when they misbehaved or exhibited attitude. Their older jr high coach was about 60 and a Jefferson Moore graduate while the other 4 were La Vega or Connally products. The varsity coaches were there helping, 3 ran my chains and the other 3 were behind the bench and coaching up kids but not stepping on jr high coaches authority. It was VERY impressive. And La Vega and also China spring had athletes but the pirates skill was awesome but discipline. The stands were very crowded but filled out quickly with no incidents. In the end highlight gamee La Vega won by 7 in the 4th. Most coaching staff that go to junior high games, often will just sit together in a pack and watch. That always bothered me because I believe it’s great for the junior high to see varsity coaches helping in anyway possible. And that is what La Vega did. Was very impressed and with Athletes they have Las Vegas gonna be a power For the next few years as long as the staff stay together. The head coach and the high school staff are so important to development of a program. And since I’m not coaching anymore, I love to watch this and compare, but I have to be honest for a junior high staff – – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a junior high staff as a whole, coach as well as the La Vega staff. Just organization and delegation of responsibility was superb. La vega has a 7 grade and then an 8 th grade receiver close to 6 ft each and great athleticism and technique ( route running by these 2 was impressive. Just from this junior high exhibition, I can predict that La Vega will be in the hunt for the state championship the next four or five years. They were very impressive – – maybe they’ll give cartage a little more run for the money if they get to meet. Anyway, I just thought I’d give y’all that report cause I know some of y’all were complaining about the West Orange staff – – and coaches don’t like to admit but often times the people in the stands can see a poorly run unit.. La Vega is NOT poorly run, to the contrary they are an exceptional staff + great players = state contender! -
I don't know what WOS has but I went to La Vega to watch their first Saturday practice in full pads. Unfortunately, not much hitting just special teams work and pix. I spoke with their hc Coach Hyde I believe and congratulated him on last year where they lost at Jerry World to Carthage. They actually played a good game and kept it close for a while. He didn't want to hear that. If its the same qb as last year (i think it is cause I saw him at practice) he is built like a refrigerator with great feet but he thinks he is Dan Marino. He doesn't realize the damage he could do on running-- maybe he's more confident this year. Glad i don t have to feed him.

Kingwood (28) @ La Porte (34) - FINAL
Coachbearoso replied to jdawg03's topic in High School Football
Yes, Kingwood has turned it around last year. I don't know the head coach, but he obviously knows what he is doing. I kind of figured that he would doing what Koch did at Houston Memorial. I know Clayton Maple, he was a bright eyed youngun when I was in my 40's, but he is at Kingwood Park. Does La Porte have any Saturday games? I would love to see them, but Thursday and Friday I am reffing central Texas and then Saturday morning i ref full padded 6 man football btw Waco and Cleburne. They have a league. They combine 2-3 graders, then 4-5 graders. Awesome to watch and ref. Friday I did a 6 man in Waco. It was Waco Home School team vs Bryan College Station. Awesome athletes- qb 6'3" on both teams and can go. FG kickers blasting it from outside of 40. Some of them will play small college. I never went to Jerry World on Day 1 to watch 6 man, but I will this year -

Congratulations Bulldogs!! From Central Texas, sending best wishes to one of my old schools in Southeast Texas for a great season!! Beating your rival in an opening day classic like this can really propel your team through the season. Only rival game I have seen as intense is old school Baytown Sterling vs Baytown Lee or PNG vs Nederland! Football is BACK! coachbear -

What Week 1 game(s) will you be attending?
Coachbearoso replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in High School Football
Thursday Mcgregor @ Hillsboro 9-jv head line judge Friday Mart @ Whitney official 25-40 clock operator 👍🏻 Should be a good one as I believe Whitney beat the tar out of Mart, embarrassed them last year. Plus hopefully the food selections in Whitneys press box are good. In my coaching years in Southeast Texas, the best food as a pressbox coach were The Rig in Pearland ( always Cajun seafood and chicken) or Port Arthur Memorial ( homemade plates of smothered pork chops, mashed potatoes and macaroni with cheese). -

Wow amazing how things have changed. I was there 2003-07 and we couldn't get kids to leave the weightroom after school in the offseason. Great numbers and athletes. Administration, like always has a lot to do with it as far as head coaching hires. Without the right head coach, a championship contender can become a dumpster fire quick. I was there during Coach Carson s last years before moving on to College Park. The head coach is the most important part of a football team. This is why I did it for almost 4 decades and write about it now. FiretheCoach on Substack -

Man, I remember hearing about Al, heard he was a beast. I played against his cousin Ted Bundy--think he was at Crawford, didn't stay long, heard he was running from the law. Wonder what happened to him. I heard Al also became a pee wee football coaching legend. Not sure. -
I agree, La Porte is so unique surrounded by Houston industry and neighborhoods, but it still has that small town feel. I would like to see a game if its on Saturday--since i will be reffing Friday- but want to get back for some Saturday games. I try to record college games and blast through the commercials;

I understand that you want to have faith in coaches, and he has turned it around in 3 years. But after coaching almost four decades I hate it when coaching ego or "the Franklin way" causes teams to lose. We as coaches can always blame the kids, but often it is the coaches stubborness or lack of innovation or just plain common sense that costs us, and by us i mean the team, coaches, school, administration and town. Right now Jackson Dart who may be a good quarterback from Ole Miss and now at the Giants, cannot take a snap from under center!!!!! Because EVERYONE offensively believes in the air offense, shotgun snap--whatever you call it. There is just things that go on, like in government, that coaches pull the wool over the publics eyes. Coaches, especially head coaches are the MOST important part of any team sport. And many are great leaders and build character in our young men. But some aren't and it , like society is getting worse every year. I would tell my defense at Crosby after each game, win or lose, to not point the finger but to look in the mirror and ask what I could have done different. I worked for Jerry Stewart, who had great success at Dayton, at Clear Lake in his first coaching job and that was the type of head coach he was. We turned a state champion basketball team Clear Lake (the year after La Porte won State) into a football power. Anyway, since i am a coach, retired, I know how much control coaches have. I also understand the pressure we are constantly under. I am going to start an online blog on Substack called "Fire the Coach cause we deserve better!" It will come out twice a week. Please follow and tell me what you think. I will start it on August 25 or26. [email protected] Isn't it great that football season is almost here!

Official shortage creating more Thursday games
Coachbearoso replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in High School Football
Hey Navydawg31, I retired after 38 years of coaching. I am now living back in central Texas and am part of the TASO Waco chapter and I will drive to Southeast Texas to ref youth league at $100 a pop as long as I can get 3 games, seriously. Give my email to the people you know. I copy all my college games and watch commercial free. Seriously if they need help [email protected] yes we are short of officials here to. -
Just to let y’all know I received my Texas Football magazine in the mail today in Waco. Now I am going to read for the next 12 hours!!!
-
This late usually means the former head is doing it to help a young coach on staff secure the job, but every school has their reasons and 90 percent of the time the public doesn’t. Who knows, my profession is sometimes crazy. Like Bum said, “There’s two kinds of coaches, them that’s fired and them that’s gonna be fired.” Anyone know when Dave Campbell’s mag will start coming in the mail?

As a coach of 40 years experiencing the Houston area and some good years at Crosby, I agree with 14.2, 💯! The problem with a lot of coaches is they defend other coaches no matter what. And that has hurt our profession. And I’m talking about the Texas High School Coaches Association who often cover up poor or bad coaching with good old boys, or even worse coaches who actually hurt kids. Yeah it goes on, but you never hear about it because school districts don’t want to get a bad wrap. To me, it goes in this order for success at the high school level 1) great head Football Coach who is also a good man ( very important in my book) 2) great defense coordinator 3) solid offensive scheme 4) Great quarterback, and running back 5) all other athletes on defense again, I would like to say that the quality of Head Coach is out there in Texas is great, it may be better than most states. I’m in Louisiana now and I plan on going watching some high school football around here. But Louisiana is a different animal because you got so many private schools and so many athletes that get scholarship to private schools. Texas is very unique. I became a coach because my father served in Nagasaki and had radiation and chemical poisoning which made an alcoholic. So my father was my Football Coach who became the head coach at Waco.Midway one of the most successful in central Texas history, Kent Bachtel. But unfortunately, just like it is in the construction petrochemical and business industry. A lot of good old boys, hire good old boys. You never really know who is in charge of hiring because it differs in each job.. sometimes a committee has power, sometimes a soup, sometimes the owner of the Chevrolet dealership has the power! seriously it changes with every hire. But if you don’t get it right, you can screw up a great system. FYI, of the 11 head coaches who might work for as an assistant, coach, assistant, Head Coach or defense coordinator, two were great men, and both were very successful at training, young men to strong men, and also by wins on the scoreboard. The other nine, seriously, if they were on the ground burning, I wouldn’t urinate on the stop the fire. And I’m not exaggerating. But they kept getting head jobs because they were in the old boy network names here in Southeast Texas. But they taught young boys— not good things but they could sell themselves to the superintendent, board or public. See Tom Herman , Jimbo and Irving Meyer as examples. Sad but true

Coachbearoso replied to Little Jerry's topic in High School Football
Yeah, actually it’s not that big of a deal because you are in superintendent and most of the departments or assistant superintendent are already there with the job description. To me would be much more of a problem if I high school principal left or Head Football Coach left at this time. -
I remember some of those Katie La Porte games, I was at the game I believe in the playoffs when it was done at Memorial Stadium off of I 10. Can’t remember the name of it. It’s where former teammate Craig James played for Stratford all of his games. Anyway, those were some great games And I remember watching a great coach team get beat by an even better coach with a little less talent La Porte team. Great memories. i’ve been in Texas the last two weeks I didn’t get to attend any high school football games, but went to University of Texas and Colorado State game and just watch some games but if All still in Texas, I would love to go see the Hill versus La Porte. Hill has one of my former players, Chance Nelson , coach of wide receivers, and I’m familiar with La Porte‘s offense. In my opinion, Coach needs to open it up a little bit to make La Porte really dangerous. He didn’t do that at Dobie with a lot of talent. He was too predictable a teams good defense coordinator could defend them very easily! He leaves a lot of points on the field with his lack of innovation.
