  1. They should be starting district on Friday at Lumberton.
  2. Very true. The second string is getting a lot more minutes than they will in district. They are all juniors and have no experience on the varsity level. Thats where a majority of Nederlands turnovers are coming from. They will get better and cut down on the give aways as the season continues on. But give Memorial credit, they completely shut down Chris Hammond and Francis Torres. They were completely smothered the entire game. Chris didn't score and Francis only got a couple transition baskets. Memorial made someone else score besides the two stars and no one was able step up enough for the win. Let's don't blame the turnovers on the young guys. Most of the turnovers are being made by the players that have been on varsity for three years. If the bulldogs are going to make it to the playoffs, this has got to stop.

  10. For Coop to make this statement means more to me than anything that I have seen about this situation. I'm sure he put a lot of thought in this comment before it was posted. I have heard from someone that says that they do not have the resources to get the 211 people out. I think he was referring about Galveston. Coop, were you referring to Galveston? Nope. Thanks for your honesty. Thats what I thought you meant.

  13. Nederland beat Legacy, Silsbee by 1, and Evadale in Pool Play. Nederland plays Cleveland at 10am Sat.
  14. Mr. Inside - Willie Jefferson Mr. Outside - Tramain Thomas
  15. PA News aticle continued: Tramain Thomas took a shot at the top of three-point line for the tie as the buzzer went off, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Thomas’ shot banked out and Gamble’s Awards teams dropped to 4-1. Thomas was the night’s biggest peformer. The East Chamber’s standout and Willie Ray Smith Defensive Player of the Year award winner gave fans plenty to watch. Thomas, who will be going to Arkansas on a football scholarship, scored 19 points, pulled down nine rebounds, made four steals and dished out four assists. The senior guard looked very sharp running down passes like a top-notched defensive back would. In one series in the second half, Thomas finished an alley-oop, recovered his feet and ran down a long pass on the opposite end of the floor for the steal. “He had a great night and he is certainly the athlete we have all heard about,†Gamble said. “But I can’t just single him out because everybody made a contribution at one time or another. This team played with a lot of heart. We lacked some of discipline at key times in the game. I wasn’t expecting us to have as many turnovers as we had. Turnoevers will kill you in any game but when you are playing against a team with that kind of size, you have to be especially sharp with the ball.†Just like they were in the first quarter, the Awards team came out in the third a little tight. Gamble’s squad owned a 54-50 advantage going into the third quarter but committed eight turnovers in that frame. Houston converted seven of those turnovers into points and took a 78-76 lead into the fourth quarter. The Franchize outscored the Awards team 28-22 in the third frame. The Gamble bunch did much of the same in the first quarter, committing seven turnovers in the that frame and allowed Houston to out score them 29-22. The Awards team settled down in the second and fourth quarters. They only committed four turnovers in each of those periods. The rebounding also took a turn in the second half. As outsized as they were, the Awards team had a 23-19 rebounding advantage in the first half. Much of that was because of the play of Central’s Jamar Gulley, a Mr. Inside finalist who had six rebounds in the first half. But when going up for a dunk early in the third quarter, Gulley was fouled hard and went to the bench with a wrist injury. Gulley did not return. That put Gulley on the bench with Jefferson, who finished with seven boards, and Marcus Malbrough of West Brook who finished with a team high 12 boards. Jefferson and Malbrough were both in foul trouble for almost the entire game. Jacoby Joseph, a second time finalists for the Mr. Inside Award, scored 12 points in the game. He also had six boards. Hardin-Jefferson’s Jarvis Bernard was a critical part of the Awards team’s success in the first half. Bernard scored 13 points, hitting two from behind the arc in the first half. Bernard also hit a bucket to tie things up at 35-35 midway through the second quarter. That was the second tie of the ball game. The first tie came early in the first quarter when Houston hit a bucket to tie the game at 10-10. After that score, Houston went on a 13-4 run to stretch its lead to 23-14. Just like they did all night, the Awards team fought back hard, however. “They (Houston) were just a great team,†Gamble said. “They are very good and they had too much size for us. We just couldn’t match up with their size and that allowed them to get a lot easy buckets.†The sixth annual Port Arthur News/Gamble Awards banquet will be tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Parker Center in Port Arthur where the Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside winners will be announced.
  16. Just got home from the game. Gamble All Stars lost by 3. I think it was 97-94.
  17. PA News Article Continued: "They (Franchize) are a bigger team but we will play them tough. It will go back and forth." English said that he is proud of Hammond's accomplishments and thinks the Mr. Inside nomination is well deserved. "He's a really good player with the potential to be even better," English said. "But anytime you get noticed and have the chance to play in a game like this, it's a really good thing. Hopefully he has fun with it, learns something from it and comes back to lead this team (Nederland) to the playoffs next season." Tickets for the Port Arthur News/Gamble Award basketball game are being sold at the Port Arthur News and Lamar State College-Port Arthur business office. Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for students. The other finalists for the Mr. Inside award are Willie Jefferson from Ozen, Jacoby Joseph of Ozen, Marcus Malbrough of West Brook and Jamar Gulley of Central. Jefferson and Gulley are juniors while Joseph and Malbrough are seniors. Gulley is listed at 6-3 but has a bigger frame than the lean Hammond. Jefferson is the only true post player for Gamble this year. He stands at 6-7. Previous Mr. Inside winners include Kendrick Perkins (2003, Ozen), Ashton Hall (2004 and 2005, Kountze), Dominique Keller (2006, Memorial) and Richard Netherly (2007, West Orange-Stark). "It feels good just to be considered," Hammond said. "It has been a lot of fun and it's an honor to be a part of this."
  18. Coach Henderson coaches an AAU team in Houston called the Franchize All Stars. I've heard that this is the team that he is bringing.Franchize All Stars went 3-0 in last weekends Spring Ice Breaker. Report from RCSSPORTS.COM: "Speaking of middle schoolers, the Franchize AS who features one of the best frontcourt duos (Ray Turner from Jones HS and North Carolina recruit John Henson from Round Rock HS) also boasted the nation’s top seventh grader DJ Griggs. Hundreds of fans wished upon a possible matchup between the Hoops and Franchize AS, but it never materialized after their coach (Terrul Henderson) turned down the opportunity in favor of playing all of his game against out of town teams. Ironically, Henderson is head coach at Port Arthur Memorial HS, and a packed house was on tap to see him coach against the Port Arthur Heat Elite featuring storied PA Memorial HS star, J’Covan Brown. Joining Brown in the backcourt was very talented soph DeCarlos Frank (Beaumont Ozen HS). PA Heat jumped out to a 10pt first half lead, but the Franchize AS made the needed adjustments at halftime and pounded the ball inside to Turner (24pts) and Henson (10pts) for a 62-56 win. Xavier Roberson (Yates HS) was nursing a sore back and did not suit up nor play for the Franchise All Stars."
  19. This is the rest of the PA News Article: Bernard is the other All-State player on the team. Bernard averaged 22 points for HJ and was the MVP for District 21-3A. Practice resumes Monday and will continue through Thursday. The game, which was originally announced for Thursday night have been moved back to 8 p.m. Friday at the Parker Center. On Saturday night, the winner of the Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside Awards will be announced at a banquet at the Parker Center. Gamble said the thing he is most impressed with so far is the players eagerness to learn what he expects them to do. "They aren't in the condition that I would like them to be in," he said. "Their conditioning is a little worse than some of our previous teams but they are eager to learn and very attentive. "The one thing I can see is that we were better in our second practice than we were in our first, and that is a good thing. This group has a very good work ethic and you always appreciate that as a coach." Gamble’s team had its closest call last year when it won 89-87 in double overtime on a basket by Kountze’s C>j. Busty with one second left.
  20. Just heard that the tournament has been cancelled.
  21. The 10 finalists make up the roster for the Gamble team. I don't know about the Houston area team.
  22. This is the rest of the PA News article: Joseph, a 6-5 forward, is the only other second-time finalist besides Thomas. Joseph averaged 10 points, eight boards and two steals for Ozen this year and was named to the 22-4A first team All-District squad. At 6-7, Jefferson, the 22-4A Defensive Player of the Year for the secodn time, will be team's only true post player. Jefferson averaged 11 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks this season, and was named to the Nederland All-Tournament team. Nederland’s Chris Hammond, the first Bulldog to be selected as a Gamble Award finalist, is also a member of the Mr. Inside group. The 6-3 junior forward nearly helped Nederland break into the playoffs for the first time since 1993, but the Dogs were edged out in the final two games of the season. Hammond averaged 16.6 points and seven boards per game this season. He also dropped in 66 treys and had 62 steals on the year. Other Mr. Inside finalists include Marcus Malbrough of West Brook and Jamar Gulley of Central. Gulley, who like Hammond is more of a swing player than an inside player, was chosen District 22-4A's Offensive Player of the Year. He averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 boards and hit a sizzling 51 percent from the field this season. Gulley was also named to the James White Classic, YMBL and James Gamble Classic All-Tournament teams. Malbrough, a first team 21-5A All-District choice, helped lead the Bruins to the playoffs this season. The 6-5 forward, a Port Athur News Super teamer in football, averaged 13 points, seven boards and three blocks on the year. He has accepted a football scholarship to Missouri. Of the 10 players on this year's squad, only Hammond was not part of a playoff team. Hammond certainly did his best to get the Dogs there, however, as he averaged 18.4 points in league play this year. Of the other teams with players representing this year's squad, only Central's Gulley and West Brook's Malbrough and Lopez did not make it to at least the regional round of the playoffs. Lopez averaged 14.6 points, five assists and 2.5 steals per game for the Bruins and was named to the YMBL and James White Classic All-Tournament teams. The Bruins and Jags fell in the first round of the playoffs. Johnson, one of the smallest player on this year's team at 5-10, averaged 7.5 points, eight assists and three steals for the Panthers. Ozen marched through District 22-4A with a perfect record and did not lose in the postseason until falling to No. 1 ranked Houston Yates in the Class 4A region three semi-finals. Silsbee, meanwhile, was a state semi-finalist, who knocked off Bernard and Hardin-Jefferson to get there. Bernard was the District 21-3A MVP and averaged 22 points, six boards, 3.5 assist and 3.2 steals per game this year. Bernard was also named to the HJ Classic and East Chambers All-Tournament teams. Past Mr. Inside winners include Kendrick Perkins (Ozen 2003), Ashton Hall (Kountze 2004, 2005), Dominique Keller (Memorial 2006) and Richard Netherly West Orange-Stark (2007). Past recipients for the Mr. Outside Award include Trey McDowell (West Brook 2003), Keithan Hancock (Kountze 2004), Roderick Bellard (Ozen 2005), and Kris Richard, of Ozen, who took home the prize the past two years.
