1. Who do you think is the better match here, Spurger vs Broaddus or Zavalla? The same goes for HD. I have heard that Zavalla has a really good team, while Broaddus is a step down from years past. Either way, the games should be good un's!
2. Good call there Catman. Got to hand it to BS. Two big games with two key players out. Like the old saying, "champions make their free throws". Sure sounds like this was the case in this game. Good luck to BS, HD & Spurger in the bi-district games. Catman, from your post, does HD play Broaddus or Zavalla? Will be fun to watch these games!
3. Got a question. Where can a person find the district basketball records throughout Texas? With the playoffs starting soon, I would like to start to checkout who might a given team be playing. Any help will be appreciated.
4. I Appreciate your interpretation of the rules. I believe all that have read this string knows what Catman and I am referring too. I am not jealous of anyone or anything, so I am not sure what you are referring too. Copeland is a very good player and may very well be the MVP. I have heard many say that he is a good person and citizen as well. When I think of a MVP, I also consider these other parts of a person. Again, the times that I have seen him play and what I have heard about him, he is a very good candidate for MVP. Stating facts does not fall into the category of negative feedback nor is it BS as you put it. Since when does making a factual statement about anything turn into negative feedback and BS? The reference to the push offs is a valid one, as he does routinely push off. Fact. Now does the ref's call it or not? This was the original question made in an earlier post. One can make the case that because of his ability, teams must double and triple team him in an attempt to contain him (which usually fails as he routinely still scores a lot of points). Is there hand checking taking place by the defense attempting to guard him? Yes and they are often called for it as well. What is being said on this string is that there appears to be a disparity of calls being made. Again, fact, he is often hand checked and, fact, he often pushes off. Enough said, lets tip the ball off and play ball!
5. Not sure what you are getting at Mr Reality, but the way I read the rules, it says that a player can not use a forearm or hand to hinder the opponent. In fact, the rule states: "A player shall not use the forearm and hand to prevent an opponent from attacking the ball during a dribble or when trying for a goal." Watching Copeland, he routinely uses his left fore arm and hand at times to gain a advantage over his opponent. Even in East Texas this is considered a foul. Maybe just not in WH.
6. How many points or left arm push-offs did Copeland have? Sorry, I could not resist the temptation!:
7. cma123, got any stats? What was the score the last time they played?
8. I think that Spurger should win this one. Didn't they play during the Spurger tourney & Spurger won. Might have been during the regular season. Copeland is a great player, he just needs a bit more help. If WH can some how slow Spurger down, they may have a chance.
9. I think that shackbully pretty much stated what I said in an earlier post. It all boils down to maturity and respect. There are rules in place for these events, the school admin I believe is hesitant to take a stand out of fear of retaliation, etc, etc, etc. It is not until a parent/fan gets out of control (rude, cursing, etc) that this is when we wonder what to do. This person must be escorted out and told the rules. The admin staff should have a handout to give them on the way out the door that explains the schools rules concerning behavior. I also think that there might be a fine line to what we are talking about. In other words, what you think is rude behaviour could be different from the next person thoughts. I hope that we do not get to the point that the parents and fans can not get involved without being escorted out the door. Again, maturity and respect should dictate our everday life, not just in, on or next to the field of play.
10. I heard someone once say "you know you are getting close when you feel the 'bump' at the county line". It Tyler County's way of welcoming you. Sorry, I deviated from the topic.  ;)
11. We should be able to sit where we want. With reason and maturity. Maturity is what we are really talking about. Adults should act like adults and when they do not act with maturity or civility then others need to get involved. I believe by UIL rules, there should be a plan on how to deal with problems at a game. There should be several school administrators present (and not sitting with buddies discussing the next tea or social) and observant as to what is happening. Each game should also have some sort of law enforcement present and seen. I am sorry, but there really should be a zero tolerance when it comes to these issues. The worse the individuals act, the stiffer the punishment should be, up to and including banned from sports events for the rest of the season. I have often sat in the "opposing" teams area and really enjoyed it. Why? Because I talked to those around me and got to know them and their team. Maturity my friends. It is not mature nor smart to be sitting in the middle of enemy territory and to go running your mouth. When those around you are not mature, move! If those immature adults start to get rough and physical, contact a school administrator and/or the law enforcer. Maturity.
12. Would like to know what are the thoughts about the individual and team matchups. Obviously all are excited about this one, so how will this play out for the rest of the district games as well? Right now, the HD & BS match up will continue to be the deciding factor, but with Spurger losing to HD, another loss in District could really hurt them. Seems to me, BS should be favored in this one even though it is in Spurger's gym. If BS wins, Spurger will really need to run the table the rest of the way in district to have a chance. I would say that this is my opinion, only if I had 2 cents. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
13. I totally agree courtside! I posted on the Big Sandy/Evadale string that there are two things any team must do. 1) Score more than your opponent, and, 2) Keep your opponent from scoring. It is not fair that a better team be punished by slowing down or stopping because the opponent cannot do #2 above. My point was that when this condition occurs, every player should play a good bit. The last I looked, high school basketball win/loss records do not include the score or margin of victory. The players on both sides worked hard in practice, etc to get there, so let 'em play. Enjoy the games tonight.
14. As with the Big Sandy/Evadale game, I hope that ALL get to play, no matter the score.
15. Makes you wonder what the half time comments for both teams was like.
16. Keep in mind that there are two aspects of sports. One. Score more than your opponent. Two. Keep your opponent from scoring more than you. Obviously, Evadale could not do either. I am wondering what the score was by quarter. I hope every player for both teams got to play and play a lot. May Evadale keep their heads up and continue working hard.
17. If the Warren players can play nearly 1.5 qtrs without a coach and beat Spurger at Spurgers house, then it seems to me that they have a winning attitude and desire that should carry them far. I think I read where they were around 12-15 points down when the coaches were shown the door. They basically thus came back on their own. Shows real desire to me. As far as the ref's comment you made, the whole team (players, coaches & fans) must to adjust to what the ref's are calling or not calling. Just one of those things that a nonphysical team will need to work on to over come. if they (Warren) can overcome playing without a coach, they then should be able to bow up and play a more physical game. The problem most feel about the ref's is that the calls are not made at each end of the floor. I agree, nuff said. They can be a playoff team. I wish them luck!
18. When I read or hear someone say "the ref's let them play", this is usually translated into the game was or will be rough. Some teams can adjust to the rougher play and some can't. There are those teams that play street ball and play rough, where as the usual opposite is those teams play an organized game and expect fouls to be called. When the came is allowed to be rough, these teams and their fans expect calls to be made and get upset when they are not. Sometimes it is difficult to determine how the ref's will call a game until the ball is tipped. This is why each team has the 5 time outs so that the couch will hopefully call a TO and settle the team down and tell them to get in there and get rough. In other words, give out what they are taking. Most coaches will usually wait too long to call a TO and by then, the players and fans are getting to point of frustration. Did I hear someone say UIL letters and COPE? You could not pay me enough to ref.
19. Having been to a couple of these games, I am not sure what you are refering to when you say "Little Dribbler Syndrome". What I see is basically three groups of fans in the stands. 1) Those that are somewhat interested about the game/team, 2) those that are there for everything except basketball and 3) those that are there to incourage and cheer on the players including their child. If those fans that are in this third group happen to be parents, does mean that they have this "syndrome" you mentioned? Sounds to me that there are some that maybe reading more into what is taking place than that is there. If, and I repeat if a player that was at one time apart of a little dribblers team and he or she happens to talk to his/her parent during any portion of the game, is this wrong? I for one would hope that my child would one day make contact with me during the game. It is called support, love and unity. Maybe some again are reading more into things.
20. Any ideas how this will play out? Looks the poll likes Brookeland. Anyone know naything about Logansport or Deweyville? Didn't Warren beat Spurger early?
21. What is going to be interesting is that I think, and I strongly state THINK, that WH is in the Spurger Holiday tourney next week. So in essence, these two will play each other Friday, and again one day next week. I am not sure whom else is in the tourney at Spurger, but this has the makings of setting the table in this district early. It will be interesting to see the W/L if these two play each other early. Will may or may not let the likes of Big Sandy know where they may stand. My 98 cents worth.
22. Wondering what the thoughts are on the WH/Spurger game tomorrow night in Spurger are? Sounds like to me that WH's Tyler Copeland scores ~1/2 of their points. Can he be stopped or slowed down enough to upset the apple cart? For what I have seen on this board, Spurger scoring seems to be spread out betwen the team, not just relying one player to carry the water. Sounds like this will be a good game, either one could win. Opinions......................
23. As with most games in the area, the JVG or JVB usually tip around 430-5pm. I think I heard someone say that there is not a JVG game at Evadale tonite and the JVB are starting around 5pm? Appreciate the link to the other poll. Will check it out!
24. How many times did these two play in the last 2-3 weeks? I am sure both are ready to move on. As one posted last week, a waste of gas to go to those games. Now, both can move on with reality.
25. Spurger should win this one (+20), even the JV (+10) :. Friday is going to be the first real district test for Spurger when they play WH @ home. The Spurger Holiday Tourney will also be interesting as well. Any one know where a good reliable poll for the HS basketball can be found? Noticed this morning that Broadus was out of the latest TABC poll. Strange, as just about all would agree that they are one of the strong teams again this year.
