Last year Silsbee beat a top 2 5A team, but that was last year.  That doesn't mean they were a top 5 5A team last year.  They are definitely not this year, not in 5A.

I think Houston schools, talking about HISD, drop to lower classifications because attendance is down.  Everybody is moving to Cypress & Fort Bend & beyond.  Meanwhile the yuppies and some buppies are moving in and gentrifying all the old neighborhoods.

For the record I live in Houston & I've been here longer than I care to admit. Even when I was growing up in Silsbee, Houston was a 2nd home.

Exactly!!!! And also some of those exceptional players  that are zoned to the Houston public schools attend prep / private schools. That’s why the private schools are on top. Back in the game the only private school in Houston that could compete was strake !!! Now you have charter, prep , and private schools that are all super competitive.

and yes silsbee would be competitive in 5a but top 5 no !!! Maybe top 15-25..maybe top 5-10 in Houston area but statewide Nope ...

SoSilsbee has a special generation of players right now, and HJ just doesn’t.  HJ is a solid 4a squad, but Silsbee would go very deep in the 5A playoffs if they’re playing like they’re capable.  Up until the last couple of years, even though Silsbee was clearly the better team, HJ had a couple of horses good enough to keep it close, and Silsbee wasn’t quite to this level yet. These last 3 years or so we’ve seen HJ drop from a top-10 4a caliber team to a top 20-25 team, while Silsbee has risen to arguably the level of a top-5 5A team.  The results in their matchups have reflected this.  It’s hard to be surprised when one school is down (although still a solid team), and the other has so much talent they just  won a  4A championship in arguably the deepest 4A playoffs ever.  With the amount of Houston and Dallas schools staying at lower classifications to try and win championships (while essentially having a talent pool of tens of thousands of kids to pick from), it just goes to show how incredible this group from Silsbee has really been.

Sounds like someone  is tooting their own horn ...public city schools are at disadvantage just as they have an advantage..it balances out ..smh ..name me the Houston  schools that are CURRENTLY dropping down to win championships...

Idk.  My issue with Yates is the system they run plays to Silsbee’s strengths (I.e., guard play).   The press is extremely vulnerable on the back end and Silsbee wot be forced to even shoot it well if they attack the basket like they should.  On the offensive end, I’ve never figured out what Yates is trying to accomplish other than jack the first open shot they see.  But silsbee has also not made the best decisions on offense a lot this year.

Having said that, if Yates does shoot it well, they could beat the Tigers.  But to imply Yates is a clear favorite is a bit optimistic and biased on your part imo.  To me, this is a game that could go either way but gun to my head I would absolutely take Silsbee.

But there is a lot of basketball to be played between now and then and I don’t think either team should plan on coasting to the regional finals.

I agree with what you saying ..I’m not saying they are a clear favorite ..It can be a winnable game for silsbee  ..but based on watching both teams it would be a slight  upset ..depending on the way Yates shoots the ball ..and maybe it’s clear to everyone or it just looks to me that Yates focus is solely on defense/ press sets ...I only see their coach  only calling defensive plays unless it’s like at the end of a qtr....

No one in 4A not even Yates has played the schedule Silsbee has played. I don't think Center could beat Silsbee on a neutral court and I don' see Hardin Jefferson beating Silsbee next week. I see Silsbee rolling thru to the regional finals and beating Yates 87-82 to advance to state where it could be a Semifinals or Finals showdown vs Dallas Carter. Out of all the non district loses Silsbee only took one beat down to Wagner and played the following week within 10 points with football players. Maybe PA Memorial or Westbrook could have played Silsbee schedule and had one or two more wins. None would beat Wagner, Duncanville, Concordia, or Atascocita. They will go into the playoffs at 23-8 and they will be fine. This year' schedule was harder than last year' with 5 less seniors. IMO kids like Chris Martin, Sells, and Newton will find their groove here soon. Go Tigers!!!

Unmmm bro ...atascocita lost to north forest ...and anybody that knows basketball and has watched both Yates and silsbee  play this year knows that silsbee isn’t favored to beat Yates this year ...strength of schedule means nothing when you’re losing vs all of the tough teams that you are playing

Yates and Silsbee play a similar style of game, both teams lives and dies with the 3's and fast break points.  Yates has the edge with depth, and inside play. I can guarantee you one thing, Coach Wise will not come out of his full court press and history has shown that a team that presses doesn't like to be pressed.  It's going to be a good game if both teams make it back to Huntsville.

I agree...I have never seen yates get out of the press ..and one year it cost them a championship vs kimball....silsbee will zone and  get out of the press sometimes if needed..yates press is more choatic ..it’s like they include the refs with the press ..it looks as if they have extra players on the court...silsbee’s is more fundamental and controlled...should be a decent game ...not by 30 tho both teams play with too much heart and pride to make it that far and lose by 30

Like I said, Yates by 30

No way ..from what I seen this year is yates  30 points better than silsbee..but true at this point yates are a better team..silsbee can beat Yates if they are slipping ...if yates aren’t making three’s and if silsbee rebounds and  slows down the dunks/fast-breaks they can’ beat them.

For some reason the words "weak and Wheatley " just don't go together.

No it doesn’t ...but these private, and prep schools have all but killed competive inner city school basketball...I remember a time where Westbury Christian and strake were the only two good private school programs..hell I remember when it was just strake ...now the privates are better than the publics...times have changed

    ...

Yates definitely would control the inside. But I think Silsbee starting five is better and would have to have a bad game for Yates to win. The game will definitely be a good one.

Yates plays off dunks ...those blow out wins for Yates are with running clock..they could’ve put up at least 150 on Wheatley with ease

May not be Silsbee's year.  Still early.  Not even 2018 yet.  Polls only mean so much.  Paris was high ranked last year and the year before.  Come playoffs, nothing.

Lemme go troll Yates message board.  Oh, that's right.  They don't have one.

If that’s meant toward me I’m a north shore man .was I bragging about silsbee losing to north shore nope? ...bruh I watch all teams and call it like it is ..and since u bringing up Yates ...I’m assuming u want my assessment  on Yates vs silsbee ...silsbee is capable of beating them but Yates would have to play a bad game ...lol ...kill the excuses bruh ..take ur lick

I think it's safe to say that people across the state are somewhat jealous of the fact that DFW/East Texas teams are willing to pour tons of $ into their football programs. I've talked about this on here before, but how is it that there is 2-3 schools in setx area(Houston included) that have indoor facilities? We get so much wetter weather in this area of the state, but schools in the DFW/East Texas area regard football as a religion in that they have build indoor facilities like crazy. I have yet to figure out why we are so far behind the times down here. Maybe someone on here can explain it to me.

A part of the reason DFW schools have the money and resources to have these facilities are  due to either the districts being in fluent areas or due to a lot their districts being single or two team districts..south lake Carroll is the only team in their district, Allen is the only team in theirs ...trinity has only one other school in their district...meanwhile in southeast Tx ..just think HISD, galena Park isd Beaumont district , Baytown isd ,and port Arthur isd can’t afford that ..then most  of the other major districts with money  in the Houston area are districts with multiple schools...katy , fb, cypress, clear creek isd  have almost 10 high schools .....humble, Pasadena , and Conroe all have at least 6 ....those amenities have to be available for all of the schools in the district to use.

Northshore won state not that long ago.  When you have a big school like that, with maybe 3,500 students or more and a good coach things can turn positive quickly.  They probably have 3 or 4 feeder middle schools.  Each one of those middle schools has a basketball program.  The chances of a couple of 6'7"s, and some 6'3"s, & 6'4"s, and some good guards flowing through there on a somewhat regular basis is pretty good, a lot better than at SHS.

Same at Yates.  It's just a matter of a coach setting his net just right and catching some of that talent before Lamar, Bellaire, the private schools and the new academies lure them away.

North shore has only two feeder schools. Cunningham and north shore middle ...Remember North Shore Its in the galena park district.

Yates must have added more players if they are bigger & better as stated. I only remember 1 Player that was taller than anyone on on the Tigers roster last year. I know your saying that Yates is better in your eyes right now but can you tell me how many ranked 6A & 5A teams they have played so far? Also how did they do against Houston Christian.... did you watch that game? I think we still have a lot more ball to play. Looking forward to this matchup & think that whoever plays  their best will come out on top.

Im a North Shore fan / native  ....but Ummm yes I was at the Houston Christian game and it was a competitive game ..they have several D1’s ..pg is going to A&M ...smart and exceptional pg play beats Yates when they lose .and bro I keep up and watch a lot of High school basketball ...with the exception of their loss nobody has come close to beating them , and this is with their coach tinkering in and out different line ups ...their stating guards are 6’0 6’3&6’4 one of their guards from last year hit a crazy growth spurt the Rubin jones kid....have you seen them play ?

  13. As far as Silsbee vs Yates this year ...From what I’ve seen THUS FAR this year , and from what I’ve seen in the Cy fair tournament even with the football players added unless Yates is having a bad game Silsbee is gonna have to play over their heads to beat them...Yates are bigger ,  better and a more complete team   than North Shore ..i thought Silsbee pressed relentlessly they’ stayed in  zone  the whole game vs Cy springs

I normally really don’t do this but just in case it was for me!! First off I bleed maroon and white die hard tiger fan you even can find me in trophy case as All-State 94-95 year. I try not to hate “as some would call it” but if someone doesn’t agree or speak how they feel which might be different from ones other opinion we often call that hate. I spend a lot of my time housing kids, coaching kids, feeding kids in the summer all SILSBEE KIDS... I also support a lot of kids wishing them well to chase the dream I once had to play college ball and get that awesome education. If you noticed I said nothing about the pros because if you get a free education you won the game and all the hours you put in all the summer traveling paid off. Basketball owes me nothing because I used it to the end to get where I’m at. I was only stating about the YMBL because I was told this and my opinion was asked about the tournament. I do believe if all the local teams played it could get back to where it once was which was a big tournament for the GOLDEN TRIANGLE!!! And last but not least no hate at all I have a SON that plays for The team he was one of two freshmen on the team last year so if you paid enough attention to me and went out to trophy case you should be able to figure out who I am if you even care so you would know I’m not a HATER!!!

    Chuuuuuuch!!!!
