Truth.  I've been disappointed every time I've watched #40 (which is 7 games over the last few years), he never quite lives up to the legend built around him.  Maybe he will prosper at LSU and onward. Who knows.

They didn’t line up against each other every play, but when they did #75 wore him slap out.

With all the young players on both sides of the ball Tigers have , especially on Defense ( 2 fresh d-backs, soph DE, soph LB, 1st year football player at corner, and sev JR s)    Suratt will be out coached for this game to even be close to being close. lol

I didn’t realize this. If there are 2 freshman in the secondary that’s going to be trouble for Silsbee.

IMO to have any chance at disrupting Carthage’s offense you have to get pressure on the QB. And get pressure without putting your secondary in a bad position. That’s easier said then done, but if you get pressure on the QB he might make a mistake or 2. If he has time to sit back and pick you apart it’s going to be a very long night for any teams in 4a.

Carthage typically doesn't have a weakness.  They can run it or throw it depending on what the defense is doing.  And the coach always says they hang their hat on the defense.  That's what it takes to win titles.  And when they run up on a school with a once in a decade team, they have had the advantage of the better coaching.  Their half time adjustments are crazy good.  Titles are never easy.

Agree with everything you said here. If the game is close at the half, you can almost guarantee a Carthage win. Unbelievable the adjustments at the half, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Luckily Carthage is one of those teams that still puts a lot of emphasis on defense and have great players and coaches on that side of the ball. Coach Preston does an excellent job and is one of the most underrated coaches in the state. Lucky to have him.

Thankfully! Thats why we're dangerous. I hope the boys play with a chip on their shoulder Friday since there are a bunch of non-believers around. Its time for some folks to take notice.

Handle CS and I think that will put all of 4a DII on notice. TBH I don’t think anybody that has followed WO-S closely over the last 6-7 years is not taking them seriously. Just unfortunate that the schedule worked out like it did. But the Mustangs have done what they were supposed to do with the schedule they were given. Outscoring your opponents 372-42 is pretty dang good no matter who you have played. It just hurts y’all’s SOS when the teams are a combined 34-38 and only Newton and Silsbee are in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Personally I don’t put too much stock in any of that. I know the Chain Gang is one of the 3-4 teams in the state that has a legit shot to win a title. Probably being honest one of 2 teams that has a shot. The way Carthage beat PG and Gilmer didn’t leave any doubt who would be the heavy favorite to win a rematch. If WO-S comes out of R3, they will be a heavy favorite IMO. But gotta get by them powder blue boys this week. I think this could be a great game. But if WO-S comes out and dominates then everyone has to put them up there with Carthage. Truth is Carthage hasn’t beat a good team in a while. Hell haven’t played a team with a pulse in a month. That’s definitely not helping the Dawgs.

I can agree with that in a sense. But if you can’t stop them what’s the point. A good defense don’t give up many points. And those are the teams that win games. The most points carthage has Given up all year is to Jasper with 18 but they didn’t score but 35. Yes putting up points runs the score board defense is the key.

With offenses getting better and more diverse I think a great offense beats a great defense these days. I guess the main thing is you don’t have many teams that play great D anymore. There are a few like WO-S, Carthage, and LV that still play great D and put a lot of their top guys on D. But those teams are few and far between. Most of the time your best players are playing on offense in TXHSFB. For sure their are still a few throwbacks, but not many. Carthage is fortunate to have the depth to have athletes on D without playing them both ways, but in the lower classes that’s rare. That’s all I’m getting at. I don’t see a team outside of WO-S in 4a DII that might have a D that can stop Carthage. We will probably find out, but they haven’t shut down a team anywhere close to Carthage yet this season. So your best shot is to score as many as you can and hope it’s enough. Catch a couple breaks and get a few turnovers. Let the chips fall where they may, and in the end you might have a chance. But to think you are going to shut them down isn’t really an option. The last time Carthage got beat was because they couldn’t stop LH. Bad weather was a factor but Carthage still put up like 500 yards of offense and 41 points. Another game they almost lost in that time frame was last year against Lampasas. Lamp scored 42, but they threw 2 pick 6’s and Carthage scored 49.

I agree that a great D can be the key, just don’t think teams have great D’s anymore. Tackling is almost a lost art. Again I know there are exceptions, but not many. I just believe if your going to beat Carthage you better have a great offense. That’s the only teams that have beat or came close to beating them recently. Carthage is on a tear since the 2016 playoffs.

  6. Fact is that in DII there isn’t but 2-3 teams in the state that can match up with WO-S or Carthage this year. Both have pretty much blown thru their schedule. Plenty of years Carthage and WO-S didn’t play anybody in district and won a state championship. All this about who teams have played and how bad they beat them is kinda useless. We will know more about WO-S this week. But if we are all being real their just isn’t that many great teams in DII when you are comparing them to WO-S or Carthage.

  7. Good news is Carthage does not have an offense near as potent as 2017 when these two last met. Bad news is the defense is better. I don’t see Silsbee getting off much. Carthage offense is potent and can mix it up with whatever the D is giving them. I say Carthage 49-14 or something like that. I think Silsbee will have a tough time scoring.

  8. We all love SE and NE Texas football. No doubt about it, we are partial to East Texas as a whole. But them boys in the Centex region can play. In the smaller classes it’s tough to say which area is the best. I think it rotates almost yearly between SETX, NETX, and Centex on which area is the best from 4a - 2a.

  9. CS has been pretty consistent over the years. They don’t reload as well as some of the top programs but they are mostly well coached and play an extremely disciplined and physical brand of football. Mark Bell was a hell of a coach and I think it took them a couple years to transition to his son Brian. They were really good from 2015 - 2017, had a couple down years in 18’ and 19’, and looks like they are picking up some steam once again. This team is gonna be a problem in R3. One thing Carthage fans are happy about in dropping to DII is that at least we play in a very tough region. In DI, R3 isn’t very good. I think in DII, R3 is the toughest out of the 4.

I guess I am not surprised at CS winning the game cause they are definitely no push over, but I am very surprised at the score. Interested to see how CS matches up with WO-S. On paper looks like it’s going to be a great game.

  10. Morgan was a heck of a coach. Not sure what happened in Jasper, but it must’ve been something major to the point he got out of the coaching business all together. I really thought that was a dream situation from the outside looking in. When Morgan went to Jasper I thought they were about to blow up. There is no reason a program like Jasper couldn’t get to that elite level very few programs get to. They have the athletes year in and year out to do it, plus an abundance of talent in the surrounding areas to draw from once the winning starts. You win a couple state titles over a 2-3 year period and the athletes start rolling in, and things can exceed even the highest expectations. I know nothing about the politics or administration in Jasper, but I do know they ALWAYS have a team full of stud athletes.

I agree with you, only time will tell.  We may get a better feel after WOS vs Jasper in rd 2. I just hope if we do meet up again the conditions are a lot better than I think 2013.

Yes. That was a tough game. Depending on which end of the field the offenses were on, they basically could not punt. That’s how bad the wind was. Probably the worst weather we have played in.

Jasper vs WO-S in the 2nd round is a tough draw for both. It doesn’t feel like that should be a 2nd round playoff game. Just the way the bracket shakes out sometimes. Jasper would be better off as the 3rd place team in D10. That is what happened to Carthage in 2016. Got 3rd place in district, but the way it shook out that was really the best position Carthage could’ve been in that year. Got us an easier path to the 3rd round before we had to meet up with the favorite Henderson, a team that had beat us earlier in the year.

Stats can be misleading, it seems to me this years their are more than usual teams that are really down this year. Just because your numbers are better doesn’t mean it’s your best team ever.  Just my opinion.

Maybe, but considering Carthage has played 5 teams that were in the top 10 in their division at the time we played them would say otherwise. Now is it that the top teams are down overall due to all the craziness in 2020? Maybe. But we can only go on what we have. Carthage has played Kilgore, Gilmer, PG, Center, and Jasper as their notable victories. I would have to assume those 5 wins are as good as any 5 we had in 2017 or 2019 regular season. At face value the schedule is just as tough as it has been, and the statistics are staggering. I’m just taking things at face value at this point. We will find out.

From what I have seen of WO-S, they have a real shot at beating Carthage.

It's all about the match ups. Mustangs will match up well.

I think that’s what Carthage fans are hoping for. It’s not very fun to watch when your team is blowing everybody out. There is a lot of talk about Carthage’s arrogance, but when it comes down to it we love to see a damn game! Have played a ton of them over the years. Carthage has been involved in so many instant classics deep in the playoffs over the years. I would love nothing more than WO-S (or Jasper) to come and hit Carthage in the mouth. It’s been a while since Carthage has had a close game. But there is always that one playoff game that is gonna test a team’s will big time. It was Lampasas last year. Is WO-S the one to do it this year? Honestly I don’t think so, but I hope I am wrong. If Carthage continues on the path they are on, we are talking all time great Carthage team. Maybe the best ever. But have to finish this thing out.

To this point in the season (7 games) Carthage has out scored opponents 302-67 (33 ppg average margin of victory). Last year Carthage thru 7 games had out scored opponents 255-63 (27 ppg average margin of victory). For context in 2017, which a lot of Carthage fans say was their best team ever, they out scored opponents 321-142 thru 7 games (26 ppg average margin of victory). So statistically this years team is the most dominant team Carthage has had thru 7 games in their history, but that doesn’t take into account SOS. We will have to see how the rest of the season plays out.

Ur wrong. W.o LBs are better!! A nd both secondary are abt even. The difference is Carthage puts so much pressure on u to get rid of the ball. And also w.o can do things to Carthage no other team can.they want be able to run wide.carthage would try to pose there will running inside.but w.o rovers off the edge will give Carthage problems bcz of there quickness.

Ur wrong. Carthage has #5 Kip Lewis.

  15. Carthage offense looked like the offense is starting to peak. Couple more weeks they will be rolling. Only chance to stop them is to get pressure on Kai and stop the run. Defense is ridiculously good. That game tonight was not fair. I think Rusk had like 20 yards at the half. 44-0 at halftime and ended 51-7.

Looked like WO-S has a pretty good night also. Jasper killed Shepard, but that is to be expected.
