The baddest man on the planet, The Rock, caught COVID and struggled with it.

No one likes masks. No one like quarantine. No one likes social distancing. But if we want to have a chance to return to normalcy, let alone have a football season, wear a cotdarn mask in public.

The powers that be said play ball, despite the dangers, so at this point we all got to do our part to make this is as safe a possible for all participants. That includes wearing masks. So that's what we need to do.

Last week, the kids had to wear their masks on a hot bus 2 hours to the middle of nowhere, play a game in 100 degree heat, get back on the bus with masks and endure another 2 hour ride home so we can have our football.

And they'll do it again this Friday, and every Friday they're able to. The players, the bands, the coaches and schools are all doing their part so old farts like us can have a season to discuss on various message boards.

The only thing being asked of you is to put on a mask and you can't be bothered.

If the season ends early,  people like you are going to be a big reason why it's called off. Grow up. Put on a mask.

if covid is so dangerous schools should shut down ALL extra curricular activities.......

I was for postponing extracurriculars so we could focus on the primary goal of schools, educating our children.

Put on a mask. It's not for you, it's for your fellow citizens. it's going to be the only way to finish this season and get to a vaccine.

Your views on masks are selfish and stupid.

  3. Well, it's the third school within a week that's called a timeout.  And isn't Diboll considered Setxsports coverage area due to who they play?

I'm not saying the sky is falling, yet. But we have a long weekend coming up and kids ain't very good at social distancing, such as the above mentioned party that may be the source of Diboll's pause. Colleges aren't doing much better either.

It'll be interesting to see how this is handled when district play starts. No way all the teams in this coverage area stay COVID free.

  4. Apparently, COVID 19 is no hoax.

Diboll has cancelled athletics the rest of the week.

Hopefully they can keep the school open. I'm still wondering how this social distancing is going to work in a collision sport? and with the long weekend coming up, will the case numbers start going up when. we get closer to district and 5A/6A start?

Based on the closed UIL thread, I'm not sure we're going to finish the season. Let's enjoy it while it lasts. Wear your masks this weekend if you're able to go.

  5. White Oak and Prewitt didn't play this week, not because of Laura, but because of COVID.

Both teams are losing a couple of games. I'm sure they're not going to be the last.

With the new TEA rule about public reporting, we're going to have the info we need to determine whether this is a good idea to play football, a collision sport where if you want to win a game, you have to disregard social distancing for 100+ plays over 3 hours.

I didn’t stay home an we’re still having this conversation. You do what’s best for your family  an let free minded people that are informed self govern themselves. Believe me, I know the numbers.

Exactly. Go back and read what I said.

You, along with other liked minded rugged individual free thinkers, not staying at home is why we're here. No one likes staying at home and quarantining.

At a certain point, when are we going to sacrifice for the greater good and look out for our fellow man? I already know your answer. it never.

The 3 percent that are vulnerable do not live on top of each other. They are spread out across America which includes Alaska and Hawaii. If your not good with that then stay home as long as you want.

I stayed at home. if everyone else did, we wouldn't be having this conversation now.

And whether they are all together or spread out, that's too big of a cost to pay because you feel inconvenienced.

Then don’t work. Should they also not drive to work? Could die in a car wreck. My great uncle Duncan choked to death on a cheese sandwich. Guess he should’ve given up food.

That's messed up. RIP Uncle Dunc!

I hope y'all all know the Heimlich manuver now so tragedy doesn't repeat itself. it also helps if you chew your food slowly instead of scarfing it down.

Really, what is so bad about waiting? What's the downside? if we start as we plan on now, we are not finishing the season. no way all our teams are staying covid free.

No, I am talking about Doctors that have been silenced since this started in March. Hydroxychloroquine, Zinc, and Zithromax. My mother in law tested positive. She took the prescribed above. Boom! Knocked it out. She doing great. She’s 76 years old with underlining health issues. Like I’ve said before, we are being played on so many levels. I know the virus is real but you can’t shut down 97% of the population to protect 3% of the population. The people that are vulnerable know who they are. It’s a respiratory virus not the bubonic plague. Reports are that this virus was genetically altered to make it more contagious via China.

     Glad your family is ok.

You know that 3 percent of our population is 10 million people? That's everyone in greater Houston, Beaumont and all of Louisiana, gone.

We shouldn't be good with that. I'm not.

Non district games are not meaningless at all. Ask ANY coach.

they are meaningless in that it has nothing to do with making the playoffs. if we get through non district but district is cancelled, the season was for naught.

Besides, the last two years, Silsbee looked like trash in non district and ended up a few play away from playing at ATT Stadium.

Save our health for district and playoffs.

better yet move it all to the spring.

Did another team get it or something, I haven't heard anything new in a day or so?

Why are y'all saying it's done on Monday?

Yeah, the Cardinals came up positive this morning. And the owners had a call with the players association saying if they don't follow the guidelines ( no hi fives, no spitting, social distance in the dugout, etc.) and infections keep coming in, they could shut this down by Monday.

Our kids don't make any money playing the game. There's no reason to put them in danger. Let's play ball in the spring and quit the posturing.

  12. bLivingston pushed school opening back a week. I saw Nederland push their start to the end of August.

MLB will probably be over by the end of the weekend.

I'm less convinced this season is happening, unless it's moved to the spring. if baseball, which has billions on the line, a comprehensive plan for staying safe, the best doctors, travel accommodations, etc, can't make it outside a bubble, I don't think a 10 game HS season is going to make it.

I’m sorry Mr. Pride. I’m not being smug or condescending. To keep this on topic, I think the district shakes out like this:

    1. Vidor, 2. Huffman or Lumberton, 3. Lumberton or Huffman, 4. LC-M

I think Huffman lost some street credit due to the virus’s affect on their schedule. I talked to over 1/2 a dozen of coaches who claim that the detrimental loss of play potentially outweighs the gain from a more rested and healthy team.

Now, on that note, football is a violent sport. It just is. Our kids, and I say “our” because I have a son that plays, are more at risk of serious injury due to the game than they are of becoming gravely sick from the virus.

If a coach isn’t healthy, maybe he should sideline himself for the season, so he doesn’t become seriously ill. If Mee Maw and Pee Paw are scared for their safety, maybe they should stay distanced from their family players. They should be anyway. Not playing football does not mean these kids won’t be socially exposed.

Most importantly, Science (from all sides) tells us the kids simply aren’t at risk. Instead of shutting it all down, remove the major threats (elderly, sickly) from the equation and let everyone else decide for themselves. Don’t punish the many for the very few. That’s all I’m saying. No disrespect. I just think that “the sky is falling” mentality is hurting everyone.

I really like Vidor in this district, but GO RAIDERS!

My son plays too. It's senior year and I'm letting him play. I'm well aware of the violence of the sport. When I was a reporter a long time ago I saw some gruesome injuries at all levels of the game.

If you ask the coaches and players, of course they say they want to play, probably 95 percent of the times.

The question really should be should we play, and that decision probably shouldn't rest with coaches and players but with objective health officials.

MLB is in a pickle now because the Phils and Marlins said they were both fine playing even though Miami disclosed that they had players with COVID. Now the players say they regret the decision, 70 percent of the Marlins are infected and the number keeps going up, Philly is waiting on results, the Yankees wanted no parts of sitting the the visitor dugout at Philly. it's a complete you know what show.

We're asking a lot of our coaches (and teachers). Most of the coaches at Livingston are older gentleman and they are doing their best to stay safe and keep the kids safe.  I'm sure it's the same at every school. I don't think they should have to choose between doing the job they love and their mortality.

Silsbee has issues a week before camp opens. and they unfortunately won't be the last team to have this issue. I'd rather postpone and just play district games instead of wasting what health we have over meaningless non district games. And if we postpone, maybe we can stop the upward curve.

  14. MLB has a pretty comprehensive plan and they are not going to make this season work. The UIL and TEA are throwing stuff at the wall and hoping something sticks.

Our criminal attorney general is trying to score political points with a small audience.

We should listen to the scientists and doctors. if our local health officials say it's not safe for school to open, that should be what we do.

I’m not bugging. I’m just happy that no matter what’s decided, our kids will be just fine...if you’re basing anything on science and not emotion.

I'm actually looking at the numbers. This disease, per the scientists, is 20 times deadlier than the normal flu. And, if we're not careful, we're going to lose more than 200k of our fellow citizens before the end of the year. This is tragic.

Additionally, it's harder on our elders. Take a look on the sidelines and you'll notice we have a lot of wisdom guiding our kids. I'd hate to lose a coach over us wanting to play a game before it's safe. I'd hate for anyone to lose a child because we're playing a game.

These are not unreasonable concerns, no matter how many smug, condescending remarks you make toward me pointing this out. If anyone is emotional, it's you.

What ever will we do? Luckily the vast majority of healthy kids aren’t adversely affected.

We're not seeing eye to eye on this. So why you bugging?

I would very much like for everything to go smoothly. The evidence is saying it probably ain't.

MLB, which has way more resources than any high school, can't get through their first weekend without a team coming down with COVID. Hopefully, it's confined to one team and not two.

Asking teenagers to properly social distance is akin to herding cats. We're going to have a hard time keeping school open, let alone play games.

in light of the Harris County order, I'm going with LCM as district champs.

  17. I said it on another thread, but they keep extending the deadline for parents to opt into stay at home learning in hopes they get enough kids to make social distance possible. distance learning is a sorry substitute for in person.

I would have hoped by now that TEA would have said split up the classes so everyone has two days in school and 3 online would be the way to go so we can social distance and everyone gets to see their teach twice a week.

If MLB is having a hard time keeping people from getting infected, ( hopefully it's confined to the Marlins) it's going to be a hard ask to keep the season going with 1200+ teams across the state.

If they don't push 4A back, it's gonna hurt Huffman Hargrave. They're going to go from having a good chance of defending their title to possibly fighting for the final playoff spot.

And what HISD decides to do is another thing. what if they decide football isn't worth it (a totally defensible argument)? Will it's Cross district get a bye into area? there are a lot of moving parts and very little guidance from our leaders.
