**Nederland 35 Forest Brook 12 Final**

Positive second half lifts Bulldogs, 35-12 Steven Cohan The Port Arthur News HOUSTON — Larry Neumann knew that if his Nederland Bulldogs were going to be successful against the Forest Brook Jaguars, he would need a strong effort from his defense. With an inexperienced quarterback leading his new spread offense, Neumann got a sterling effort from both his defense, as well as four touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Kirby Bellow in a 35-12 non-district victory. “I knew we would need an outstanding effort from our defense and our kicking game,†said Neumann. “And the defense really swarmed around and shut them down. The kicking game. however, still needs a little work.†Bellow, making his first start in place of injured senior signal caller Ryan Sampere, who broke three bones in his lower leg in the Bulldogs’ season opening win over highly-touted Brenham last week, threw touchdown passes of six, six, 10 and 20 yards to four different receivers. He finished with nine completions in 23 attempts for 115 yards and one interception. “You could see that as the game went along, he had more confidence,†Neumann said. “It was a spotty success, but it was a success, and this will breed confidence and he’ll build on that. We really didn’t want to have to run it and keep it on the ground because that’s not who we are. Our strength is in our receivers and our speed.†An interception halted the Bulldog’s first drive, but the defense allowed only eight yards on three plays and the Jaguars punted. Bellow used his running game to move into Forest Brook territory but the series ended on downs at the Jags 3. After holding the Jags, Dravannti Johnson broke through the protection to block a Nathan Anderson punt, which the Bulldogs recovered at the Forest Brook 14. Three plays later, on the first play of the second quarter, Bellow found Asa Cardenas behind Jaguars’ cornerback Corey Lewis for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Jude Vidrine added the PAT and Nederland had a lead it would not relinquish, 7-0. The jubilation was short-lived. Lewis atoned on the kickoff, racing 81 yards to the end zone. In a familiar scenario, the extra point was missed, and the Bulldogs clung to a 7-6 lead. Bellow looked as though he were a seasoned veteran moving the Dogs 62 yards in 13 plays in 5:26. Chris Gutierrez caught a six yard scoring strike with 32 seconds left in the half that made the score 14-6. So dominant was the Bulldog defense, that Forest Brook was held without a single first down and zero yards in the first half. “We executed very well tonight, and we have to understand that the constant on this team has to be the defense,†Neumann lamented. “Our offense is a work in progress, and we’ll get our shots offensively like we did tonight. We scored 35 points tonight but it was ugly. But we’ll sure take it.†Titus Brown returned the second half kickoff 55 yards to the Bulldogs’ 35 yard line. Two plays later, Michael Sigers scampered through the left side of the Nederland defense to pull the Jaguars within 14-12. Jordan Landry, who spent most of the evening in the Jaguars backfield, recovered a fumble at the Forest Brook 38 yard line. A 29 yard run by Paul Roy, who led all rushers with 66 yards, gave Nederland a first and goal from the nine, and three plays later, Bellow connected with Adam Broussard for a six yard touchdown pass that increased the lead to 21-12. Bellow directed the Bulldogs 60 yards in eight plays late in the third quarter, before finding Ryan Brady in the end zone on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 40 seconds left in the third quarter. Bryce Breaux completed the scoring on a 14-yard scoring run with 2:24 left in the game. -
Port Neches duo share in Buchholz thrill By Dave Rogers Special to The News Big news in Beantown touched off Port Neches partying when Clay Buchholz became the first Boston Red Sox rookie to pitch a no-hitter. Mark Brevell, the Port Arthur native who is now assistant baseball coach at Port Neches-Groves, was Buchholz’ high school head coach in Lumberton. Former PN-G basketball star Bobby Straface is head of SSE Group, the player agency that represents Buchholz in negotiating playing and endorsement contracts. Brevell was eating dinner out with family and friends and almost missed seeing Buchholz’ Sept. 1 no-hitter. Straface wasn’t about to miss it ñ no matter how uncomfortable he made his guests. “I went to Clay’s first start,†Straface said of his client’s Aug. 17 major league debut at Fenway Park, “but this time I had a party at my house (near Dallas) and all my neighbors were there. The poor women that were there weren’t happy with me, because they had to sit still for three hours. “I kept saying ‘Stay where you are and I’ll tell you later why you can’t move.’ †Straface wasn’t about to jinx Buchholz’ no-hit bid by mentioning it. Or by going against baseball superstition that says just one wrong step or word by a fan thousands of miles away could foul the whole thing up. “It was funny. I used every trick in the book to keep the women in front of the big screen TV. It was the most special night I’ve had with Clay since the day he was drafted.†Brevell picked up one of his biggest coaching achievements in 2002 when Buchholz was a junior and pitched Lumberton to two wins in five days over Brenham in the regional quarterfinals. The coach said he sneaked out of teacher in-service training to listen to most of the Aug. 17 game on the satellite radio in his truck. But he was distracted by a family outing Sept. 1. “We were eating at Applebee’s with our trainer, Ricardo Serna, and his family, when I thought about it,†Brevell recalled. “So I called (PN-G head baseball coach) Jay Stone, who was with some other coaches watching the Texas football game on satellite TV. “I said ‘Clay’s pitching today, but I don’t know if it was a day or night game. Would you put it on and see if they’re playing right now, tell me how he’s doing?†Stone told Brevell that Buchholz was pitching a shutout in the sixth inning. “I asked him how many hits he’d given up, and he said he didn’t know,†Brevell told the story. “I told him to find out and call me back. “He called me back after the seventh inning and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but Clay’s still in the game and he has a no-hitter going.’ â€

Memorial defense, special teams play holds off Ozen By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Ozen snapped the ball 30 yards into its own endzone on a costly fourth down play in Memorial’s 19-12 win on Saturday night at Cardinal Stadium in Beaumont. Ozen punter Jared Lee tracked down the loose football but was hit from behind only to fumble it away to a hosts of Memorial defenders. The Titans recovered the ball for a touchdown and a 17-12 lead. On the point-after-touchdown try, Titan’s quarterback Harry Brown converted the 2-point conversion pass to Solomon Jones to extend their lead to 19-12. Memorial scored 12 of its 19 points on safeties and special teams play alone. Twice in the first half Memorial caused safeties. The first of the two came four seconds into the second quarter when Lee botched a snap from Ozen’s 1-yard line. The ball hit Lee in the hands but with the all the pressure bearing down on him, Lee just flung the ball behind him to give the Titans a 9-0 lead. Memorial defense caused another safety later in the quarter when Ozen quarterback Marquis Moore fumbled while trying to hand the ball off to running back Chris Raggett. Moore recovered the ball in his own endzone but Titan defender’s pounced all over him to give Memorial an 11-6 lead going into halftime. At the break, Ozen had one first down and just 73 yards of total offense. Their lone first down came on an 84-yard touchdown pass from Moore to receiver Kevin Newton who made a spectacular grab down the left sideline around the 50-yard line and then toasted the Memorial secondary from there. That score came in the second quarter with 8:00 to play in the half and cut the Titan’s lead to 9-6. The Panthers opened up the second half with a touchdown on their very first play from scrimmage. Javon Dartez busted through the middle of the Titan defense for a 71-yard touchdown scamper to make the score 12-11 in Ozen’s favor. Still 12-11 in the third quarter, Dartez busted off a 73-yard run but was caught from behind on the 7-yard line by Memorial defensive back Desmond Gardiner. Gardiner’s tackle proved to save a touchdown and possibly the game for the Titans because on just two plays later, Ozen’s Chris Raggett fumbled for the second time in the game. Titans’ safety Anthony Cockrell pounced on the ball for the turnover. Ozen fumbled five times and lost four of them. Raggett fumbled three times. Memorial coach Ronnie Thompson said he was very pleased with the defense and special teams play. “Omar Zepada (averaged 34 yards a punt and put Ozen inside its own 10 in two pivotal points in the game) punted the ball very well for us and kept them pinned down all night,†Thompson said. “I thought the defense was spectacular tonight. With the exception of a couple plays, they really shut Ozen down and won us the ball game.†The Titans did score one offensive touchdown, which came on their opening drive of the game. The drive lasted more than five minutes and took 18 plays. Quarterback Harry Brown completed 5-of-7 passing for 24 yards and rushed for 18 yards, including a 10-yard run for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead. After that drive, offense was a frustrating issue for the Titans. Memorial got the ball inside Ozen’s 10 five times in the game, scored once, threw a pick, and turned the ball over on downs three times. “I felt our defense would hold up and I just felt we could punch it in,†Thompson said about going for it on fourth down inside the 10-yard line four times. “We made it the first time and then tried a field goal later but we didn’t get the snap down, so I just liked our chances to go for it.†The Titans did pick of 21 first downs on the game. They rushed for 177 yards on 45 carries.
