Thompson going with Brown as QB By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News First games are always hard to measure. There are butterflies to consider. When the lights come on for that first Friday night of the high school football season, Memorial head coach Ronnie Thompson says a lot of times a player’s body cannot keep up with his mind. “A receiver knows he is supposed to run a 10-yard out route, but makes his cut after five yards,†Thompson illustrated. “He’ll come over and tell me he ran the route like he was supposed to because in his mind, he did.†Thompson said that’s just typical first week stuff. The Titans beat Ozen Saturday night in a 19-12 affair that saw 12 of their 19 points came by way of special teams and defensive plays. Memorial, which had such a potent offense last year, breaking 30 positive offensive records, couldn’t find the end zone or any rhythm in the passing game, which was good for 250 plus yards per game last year. It was a win but not an ideal start for the Titans, but Thompson said that isn’t reason to panic and they are happy to get it a W. That doesn’t mean you ignore it and hope it goes away, he added To start the season, Thompson’s plan was to use both senior Harry Brown and junior Jareal Alexander at quarterback. After a quick assessment of week one, Thompson has decided to go with Brown as his starting quarterback. He said Alexander will get some time in at quarterback in certain situations, but for now the Titans will use Alexander as a running back and receiver. “We need him (Alexander) on the field. Both of these guys need to be on the field at the same time and this is a simple solution,†Thompson said. “We had a lot of struggles in that first game. It wasn’t just at quarterback. We missed some open receivers but there were plenty of mistakes to go around. “There was always one thing that went wrong that led to another thing. It started with a missed block and then a missed read and so on. It was a like a domino effect.†Thompson said Ozen, which picked off one pass and held the Titans to just 125 yards through the air, got better between their first and second games. “You have to credit them. They have a very good secondary and were a better football team from what they were in their first game,†Thompson said. “Teams will usually improve the most between their first and second games. It’s a matter of finding rhythm and getting used to playing with one another. “You can practice for months but until you get in a real game, you don’t know what to expect.†Brown said he may have been given the job but nothing is concrete.

PN-G rocks Lady Dogs By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians traveled to Nederland for a District 22-4A matchup in volleyball action on Tuesday night. It was the first time Nederland and PN-G got together in district play this season. After coming off a district championship in 2006 and splitting the district with PN-G in 2005, the Lady Dogs were ready to continue their success. Rock-A-Noos had other plans, however, and played the spoiler by putting away Nederland in four games. Kayla Prasnicki led the way for PN-G with 16 digs, 13 points, and three blocks, helping the Indians get out to a 3-0 record in district play. The Lady Indians came out strong in the first game, slamming their way to a 25-11 win. In that game, Rockanoos scored eight straight points, which helped them get out to an early 15-4 lead. The Lady Dogs never settled down in Game 1. “I was really proud of the way played tonight,†Lady Indians coach Barbara Comeaux said. “We played hard and never gave up at any point in the match. The win puts us in a good shape for the start of district but this is just one game. There are a lot of good teams. We’re glad to get a win against Nederland. They are a great team with a lot of fight; but this is just one game, and we will have to play them again.†The Lady Dogs roared back in Game 2, scoring 10 of the first 14 points. The Indians cut the lead down to three points on two occasions, but Bulldog standouts Lindsey Rossi, who had nine kills on the night, Tayler Trojcak, who had eight kills, and Elizabeth Havard, who finished with seven kills, helped lead the way for Nederland’s 25-21 Game 2 victory. Game 3 proved to be the difference for the match. While the game went back and forth most of the way, Nederland built a four point, 18-14 lead but the Lady Indians called a timeout and followed with a six point run that gave them a 20-18 lead. The Lady Dogs never reclaimed the lead and PN-G went on to win Game 3 by a score of 25-23. “We finally started playing defense in that game,†Comeaux said. “That was the difference. We fought hard and didn’t give up and when we started playing defense, we turned the defensive play into some points.†Outside of Prasnicki, Chelsea Horn, Sami Jo Williams, Paige Miller and Brandi Guidry all had great nights for the Indians. Horn had 10 kills, Williams had four aces, and Guidry contributed with 16 assists. After breaking Nederland’s spirit in Game 3, the Lady Indians finished off the Lady Dogs 25-18 in Game 4. Nederland coach Toni Leach said she was really proud of her team. “They played with a lot of heart and I am really proud of them,†she said. “We just made more mistakes than they did tonight. My girls really wanted to win this one and I think they pushed themselves to the point that we beat ourselves. They got frustrated in the last game the girls never gave up. We played with a lot of fight tonight and that’s all you can ask for.†Other Nederland standouts were Kaitlyn Sneed who had nine blocks, 21 digs and four kills on the night. Savanah Desmarais had eight points, nine digs, five kills and five blocks and Holly Pryor had 31 assists, four blocks and three digs. With the loss, Nederland falls to 1-2 in district play.

Ozen takes down Lady Bears in 4 Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — In a match that had almost a playoff atmosphere to it, the Beaumont Ozen Lady Panthers just proved to have a little more “hops†and “leaps†than the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears at the Bear Cave Tuesday night. The towering front line of Jamie Brazil and Alexis Brannon and the power of Jasmine Wells and Tiara Robinson led the Lady Panthers to an early important 25-20, 26-24, 23-25, 25-18 District 22-4A victory against the Lady Bears. After game was fairly tight, but bad early starts in both Game One and Game Two spelled trouble for the Lady Bears (11-12, 1-2). Wells dominated at the net for the Lady Panthers (16-5, 2-1), putting together 16 kills and four blocks. Robinson found her way to 12 kills while Brannon and Brazil teamed up for 12 kills and 10 blocks as both teams performed well at the net. “Ozen not only has tremendous height, they have outstanding athletes,†said long-time Lady Bear head coach Vicki Castino. “They can really get up in the air. I was also impressive with the way they played defense. They dug the ball well tonight and they took every shot that we had at them. It was a very tough match with close games and I’m proud of the way our kids played.†Senior Jordyn Davis had one of her better games of the season for LC-M by posting a team-high 13 kills. Sophomore Christine Sicktich added 12 kills. Senior Morgan Blohm notched eight kills and Elissa Tate played well off the bench by nabbing six kills. The Lady Bears got behind 10-3 in Game One and were able to get as close as 24-20 before Ozen snagged the last point. LC-M dug itself into a 9-4 deficit early in Game Two. Behind Wells’ big hits, Ozen went up 24-19 late. The Lady Bears scrapped back with the next five points behind nice serving by Alexa Humble to eventhings up at 24-24. However, the Lady Panthers received a critical kill shot by Sheena Wingate, who also had eight kills, and then Wells closed it out with an ace. The Lady Bears looked as if they were going to roll through Game Three unscathed, darting out to a 9-1 lead behind a strong effort by Davis and Blohm. The Lady Panthers wouldn’t go away though. Trailing 23-19, Ozen tacked on four straight points to knot the score but the Lady Bears got a kill by Sicktich and LC-M took advantage of an Ozen miscue to snare the game. Game Four was tight early on but it was the net play of Brannon and Brazil that pushed the Lady Panthers to the victory. The duo combined for four late kills and five blocks to give the Lady Panthers a 21-14 cushion and they basically maintained that seven-point lead to salvage the match. “It just seemed like they were blocking everything there for awhile,†Castino said. “We hit the ball hard too, they (Ozen) just made a few more big plays here and there and that was the difference.†In the service game, Blohm and Carly Gauthier served up 10 points and two aces apiece for the Lady Bears. Humble had nine points and three aces and Sicktich added eight points and three aces. For Ozen, Somalia Randle poured out 13 points and three aces. Wingate had 11 points and Brittany Moore added nine. The Lady Bears will look to bounce back Friday in 22-4A play when they take a nice road trip to Dayton. “I know the kids would’ve loved to win tonight’s match but it doesn’t make us or break us,†Castino. “This district still has a long way to go. We’ve got 11 matches left in what should be a district race that will go down to the wire and we plan on being right in the thick of it.â€
