No. 1 vs. No. 2 Super 25 showdown set for Saturday No. 1 Southlake (Texas) Carroll made it look easy while No. 2 Northwestern (Miami) struggled. Still, both won to set up just the third No. 1-vs.-No. 2 showdown in USA TODAY Super 25 football history when they meet Saturday in Dallas in a nationally televised game (ESPNU, 7). Southlake blew out Lake Highlands (Dallas) 42-10 Saturday as quarterback Riley Dodge passed for 331 yards and four touchdowns as the Dragons won their 49th game in a row. Northwestern (2-0) struggled to hold the ball against Homestead (Fla.) on Friday. The Bulls, who trailed 15-14 at the half — a first for them since 2005 — had six turnovers in the 28-18 victory. Overall, Super 25 teams went 21-2 last weekend: No. 11 Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) lost 20-7 to Birmingham (Lake Balboa, Calif.) and No. 12 Jenks (Okla.), the state's defending Class 6A state champ, lost 43-42 in overtime to Union in the 40th annual "Backyard Bowl." In other action, Bryce Brown, projected to be the No. 1 recruit from the Class of 2009, ran for 187 yards and scored the first two touchdowns for Wichita (Kan.) East in the 21-0 victory against Dodge City.

Young Pirates aim to slow down Jones Van Wade The Orange Leader VIDOR — A few “young guns†got their first taste of Friday night football last week for the Vidor Pirates. This week, the youthful Pirates will be seeking their first win of the season Thursday night by taking on the Houston Jones Falcons Thursday at 7 p.m. at Barnett Stadium in Houston. The Pirates (0-1) battled defending TAPPS Big School champion Houwston St. Pius tooth-and-nail last week before falling 19-13 at Pirate Stadium. “I thought our kids busted their tails on every snap last week against a top-notch football program,†said Pirate head coach jeff Mathews. “It was tough for us because we were basically playing without six starters. We had eight sophomores that really stepped up and met the challenge though and that’s going to make us a better football team down the road.†The Pirates actually could’ve had St. Pius on the ropes but four turnovers proved too costly. “The effort was awesome all night and the kids were pretty much penalty-free,†Mathews said. ‘Defensively, we did some great things to slow them down. Unfortunately for us, the turnovers really hampered us all night because we moved the ball well.†Vidor held a powerful St. Pius unit to just 259 total yards. The Pirates managed 207 yards, 185 of it coming via the ground. Senior quarterback Roman Franklin led the Pirate ground game with 79 yards on 12 totes. Jones (0-2) ventured to Vidor last year and the Pirates pounded the Falcons 43-0. The Falcons finished 2006 0-10 but did return eight starters on both sides of the ball. Jones is led by the likes of sophomore quarterback Aaron Taylor, tailback Lamont Wilson, who returns after 612 2006 yards and receiver Titus Johnson. The Falcons fell to Friendswood 33-0 last week. “That score they (Jones) had against Friendswood is a little deceiving,†Mathews said. “Friendswood is always pretty darn tough and it was just a 7-0 game at the half. Jones turned the ball over a bunch in the second half though and it would be nice if we could get them to do the same.†Mathews is certainly concerned about slowing down the speed of Jones. “They remind me a bunch of some of those old Lincoln teams,†Mathews said. “They’re extremely fast and strong. They’re capable of making a big play on you at any time so we definitely need to keep them in front of us.†The Pirates are just looking for a win and also looking to get healthy before Livingston comes to Vidor Sept. 21 in the Pirates’ last non-district game. “We think that by next week, we’ll have several kids back that are nursing injuries,†Mathews said. “We’re counting on the young kids to step up again and play just like they did last week. They gave a tremendous effort and they’ll rise up and they can do it again.â€

BC’s Carlton adjusting to new teammates Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — When Patrick Carlton showed up during the first few days of Bridge City’s practices, he had a lot of learning to do. There was the new playbook installed by new head coach Cris Stump. Before Carlton could even worry about the football aspect of his senior season, he had to learn who many of his teammates were. Carlton, who has been on the Cardinals’ varsity team since he was a sophomore, is the only returning starter for Bridge City this year. Gone are the 32 seniors he battled with as a junior. It is a new group and with the new additions brought an added responsibility to Carlton’s shoulders. “From my sophomore year to my junior year I got used to seeing the same guys around,†Carlton said. “At first this year it was like ‘Whoa who is this on my team.’ So far I have handled it well.†So with the youth movement in full swing for the Cardinals, Carlton knew and Stump reminded him it was his job to be a leader. “Coach told me leadership is not only vocal, you have to show your teammates how to do things,†Carlton added. “I think I have worked to do that. I have had some of the younger guys walk up and ask questions. I don’t mind that one bit because this is a team sport. I am here to help them.†Stump said he has been impressed with Carlton’s ability to adjust to his new role as a senior leader. “It was certainly not a role he was used to over the last two years,†Stump added. “You can see day by day he steps into it more and more. There are different kinds of leaders and you don't make someone change their personality. He has become a little more vocal and he definitely works very hard every day.†Besides being a leader Carlton has a very important job with the Cardinals — working on both the offensive and defensive lines. It is a job that seems to get less publicity than the skill positions which is just fine with Carlton. “It’s a man’s position,†Carlton added. “I like the offensive side more and I like being one of the unknowns down there. I take pride in our whole offensive line and us doing things right.†Carlton and the Redbirds are preparing for this Friday’s road contest against the Lumberton Raiders, a team itching to make its first playoff appearance in school history. “Lumberton has a lot coming back from last year and I think we can handle them,†Carlton said. “My expectations for our team are extremely high, maybe with the playoffs down the line. From what I have seen, I like our chances.â€
