9 AM Saturday. May repeat Sunday morning as well.

For the 100th time, the field conditions were the worst i've seen in a long time after a 2.50" inch rain right before the game. ONCE AGAIN NEITHER team could do much on the ground.

BCA holds off Cards, 20-14 By Dave Rogers Published September 8, 2007 After a hot, humid night of banging bodies with a beefy High Island team, there was little bark left in the Baytown Christian Bulldogs at the end of their game Friday night. But there was more than enough fight. The Dogs used two late interceptions by Frank Frazier and Luke Davis to hold off the Cardinals 20-14 in the non-district contest at Sterling High’s Auxiliary Stadium, squaring their season record at 1-1. “Our defense seemed like it was on the field the whole second half,†BCA coach John DeRulle said. “To be able to come up with a couple of big plays like that was really something. “We definitely have some things we need to work on, but when it comes down to it, we came out with a win.†BCA took a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and had two more touchdowns called back by penalties in the second period. BCA’s offense picked up just one first down per quarter after the opening period and finished with six. High Island (0-2) ran 61 plays to 31 for BCA total as the Bulldogs held on for dear life in the second half. “I just told my teammates ‘Everybody’s got to step it up.’ I told them I was going to try my hardest and give 100 percent, ‘so you guys give 100 percent,’†said Frazier, the running back/middle linebacker who was the star of the game on both sides of the ball for BCA. “We pulled it out with two picks in a row.†Frazier had two first-half fumble recoveries for the Bulldogs and it was his two TDs that were called back. One came on a 53-yard fumble return, the other was a 42-yard touchdown run on the very next series. “I don’t put any pressure on my teammates,†he said about the penalties that took his points off the board. “They were just trying to help me make a big play. “I’m sorry it happened, but we’ve just got to shake it off.†High Island scored with four seconds left in the first half to avoid a complete whitewash in the first two periods. Cardinal quarterback Tiner George passed 12 yards to Murphy Hunt to put the visitors from the east on the board. Then the Cardinals drove 45 yards in nine plays to score again on the first play of the final quarter. Running back T.J. Kahla followed his one-yard TD run with a two-point conversion run to leave High Island just one six-pointer away from tying the game, a touchdown and extra point away from winning. After recovering a surprise onsides kickoff, it appeared the Cardinals might do just that. They drove to a first-and-goal at the BCA 8-yard line before Frazier stepped in front of George’s pass at the goal line. After a BCA punt, the Cardinals threatened again, but this time Davis, the BCA quarterback who was making a rare appearance on defense, picked off George with 1:09 remaining and returned it 64 yards to the High Island 11. With the Cardinals having already burned all their timeouts, Davis took a knee three times to end the game. “We were in a pinch where we had some guys going down,†DeRulle said of his two-way players, many of whom suffered heat cramps. “Luke Davis stepped up and gave us a real senior effort.†Chris Nightengale had scored twice to give BCA its big early lead. He followed Frazier’s first fumble recovery with a 47-yard score on a third-and-18 pass from Davis. Then he picked off a George pass and returned it 20 yards for another score. BCA opened the game with a defensive stop of the Cardinals, then Davis passed 19 yards to Nathan Peterson. After four runs for 20 yards by Frazier, Corti Wilson got the Bulldogs’ first points on a five-yard end around in the sixth minute of the game. Davis completed 5 of 9 passes for 105 yards and Peterson (2 for 30) was the only receiver with multiple catches. Frazier had 10 carries for 44 yards to lead a 69-yard rushing game for the Dogs. High Island rushed 43 times for 138 yards, with Kahla topping the charts for the Cardinals with 47 yards on 12 totes. George completed 7 of 18 passes with three interceptions for 89 yards. -
Crosby, Dayton and Anahuac pick up wins From staff reports Baytown Sun Published September 8, 2007 The Baytown Sun PORT NECHES — Crosby’s defense was put to the test Friday night and the Cougars passed with flying colors. Coach Kevin Flanigan’s stoppers turned back Port Neches-Groves’ Jacob Hemmings on fourth-and-goal at the 4 with a minute and a half left in the game to preserve a tense 7-0 win over the Indians. Crosby, now 2-0, had led since Chance Casey’s two-yard scoring run capped an 80-yard drive with the first Cougar offensive possession of the night. But PN-G’s defense played bend-but-don’t-break for the rest of the night. Crosby’s offense gained 315 total yards (177 rushing, 138 passing), but the Cougars only reached the red zone one time after their opening drive. That second-quarter opportunity came a cropper after reaching the Indian 14 on a missed 31-yard field goal. Casey, Crosby’s junior running back, rushed 22 times for 141 yards in all and senior Toris Doze added 31 yards on eight carries. Coog quarterback Duran Starks completed 13 of 19 passes for 138 yards, but his biggest play probably came on his one pass that was intercepted. The Indian defender had a clear path to the end zone, but Starks caught him from behind at the Cougar 20. PN-G could not take advantage, turning the ball over on downs. Hemmings led PN-G with 65 yards rushing on 13 carries. Indian quarterback Harrison Tatum completed 7 of 22 passes for 62 yards as PN-G gained only 159 total yards. Crosby will go for 3-0 next Friday when they play at Dickinson. The Baytown Sun SUGAR LAND — Quarterback Tristan Lewis ran for one touchdown and hooked up with Braxton Mayes for two more scores as Anahuac thumped Fort Bend Baptist 41-7 Friday night. The Panthers improved to 1-1 on the season despite a 273-yard passing barrage by Eagles quarterback Steven Hamner. Anahuac jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and dominated the scoring column after Hamner finished the first period with a 45-yard scoring toss for the Eagles. After Lewis and Ben Mayes opened the Panther scoring with TD runs of one and two yards, respectively, Lewis and Braxton Mayes connected for a TD pass in each of the second and third periods. The first covered 36 yards and put the Panthers ahead 21-7 at half. The second covered 28 yards. Anahuac wrapped up the scoring with a 70-yard punt return score by Pierre Russell and a six-yard TD pass from backup quarterback Jacob Pesina to Mitchell Douget. Anahuac rushed for 226 total yards, with Demario Williams leading the way with 91 yards on 11 carries. Ben Mayes added 67 yards on the ground on 14 carries. Lewis completed 3 of 5 passes for 81 yards, all to Braxton Mayes. By JERRY MICHALSKY The Baytown Sun NACOGDOCHES — With Dayton’s offense struggling for most of the night, its defense came to the rescue Friday night. Picking off five Dragon passes and returning one of those for a score, the Broncos went on for a 22-6 victory over Nacogdoches at Dragon stadium. Both defenses dominated early as both teams managed only one first down in the opening quarter. Gregory Charles ended the Dragons’ third possession of the night with an interception, giving the Broncos the ball at the Nacogdoches 38-yard line. Dayton could not do anything with the turnover to keep the game scoreless. The Dragons then got an interception by De Andre Reeves and turned it into points. Justin McAninch hit Carlos Downey from 29 yards out on the next play to make it 6-0 Dragons with 8:26 left in the second quarter. That would be the only offense either team would get in the first half of play as they combined for six first downs. Things looked bleak early on in the third quarter as Bronco quarterback Cody Green went down with an injury on the first series of the second half and did not return. Dayton took over at its 32-yard line a few moments later with a new signal caller in A.J. Dugat. Looking as if he had been playing quarterback the whole game, the junior drove the Broncos 68 yards for a score. The biggest play of the game came on this drive. With Dayton facing a third-and-24 at the Nacogdoches 43-yard line, Dugat hit Ronnie Powell for a 43-yard touchdown pass to tie things up at 6 apiece. Powell booted the PAT kick to give Dayton a 7-6 lead with 2:12 left in the third. The next two Dragon possessions both were ended by Paul Fontenot interceptions. After the second Fontenot interception, it was Dugat again driving the Broncos down the field. Dayton reached the Dragons’ 29-yard line before Dugat was sacked on a fourth down play to keep the Dragons close. Fontenot provided the back-breaker for Nacogdoches by picking off his third McAninch pass and returning it 43 yards for a score with 1:47 left in the game. Ford Smesny nabbed the fifth Bronco pick of the night to set up the final score. Smesny returned his interception to the Dragons 33. Dugat scored three plays later from 15 yards out with less then a minute to go. Dayton (1-1), finished the game with 203 yards of total offense while holding Nacogdoches to just 152 yards of offense. Dugat rushed for 54 yards while John Gable added 51 yards on 12 carries. Dugat finished 2 of 3 passing for 74 yards while Powell led all receivers with three catches for 79 yards. The Broncos will finally get to break in the new-look Bronco Stadium next Friday as Friendswood comes to town. Game time is 7 p.m.

**East Chambers 21 Orangefield 14 Final**

'Cats put scare into Bucs ORANGEFIELD — Like everyone expected it was the Tramain Thomas show in Orangefield Friday night. The only problem for the East Chambers quarterback was the Orangefield Bobcats almost wrote a painful ending for the Buccaneers. East Chambers jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the third quarter only to see Orangefield battle back in the second half before falling 21-14. The Bobcats actually out-gained the Buccaneers on the night with 274 yards compared to 268 for East Chambers. Thomas played the part of Superman all night with 132 yards and two scores, one a dazzling burst from three yards out worthy of an Oscar nomination for Best Moves. Orangefield (0-2) did its part to ruin East Chambers’ script in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns after the Bucs were seeming to roll. The Bobcats’ Ryan Granger was certainly the Juggernaut from X-Men on this night by bruising his way for 95 yards on 14 carries and the first Orangefield touchdown from 10 yards out. “If we started the game how we ended, it would have been a different story,†Ryan Granger said. “It certainly would have been closer. We have a lot of inexperience on defense but I will go to battle with those guys any day of the week.†And battle the Bobcats did at F.L. McClain Stadium against the Bucs (2-0). It was not always easy for Orangefield as East Chambers looked to take control of the contest early with a powerful running attack. After a speech to his troops, Orangefield Coach Blake Morrison was more than pleased with his teams effort against a quality opponent like East Chambers. “Our players are never going to quit and I will never quit on them,†Morrison said. “Something clicked in the second half. I am not sure what it was but I hope it keeps going into next week’s game at Splendora.†The Buccaneers started the night off with a marathon, 14-play and 80-yard drive which resulted in a Thomas 6-yard score. Thomas teamed up with fullback Donte Raymond for quite the running duo as the two accounted for 65 of the rushing yards in the drive. A failed extra point gave East Chambers a 6-0 lead with 1:58 left on the clock. It took a while for Thomas and the Bucs to make an encore of the scoring drive. Orangefield went on a long drive of its own with 1:57 left in the first. The drive did not result in a score but what it did do was keep the Buccaneers offense on the sideline. Ryan Granger had a 20 yard run in the drive which stalled out on the Bucs’ 30 yard line when Thomas tipped a pass away from Orangefield quarterback Jared Helton. The teams then traded punts before Thomas went back to work against the Orangefield defense, which allowed 268 yards of offense Friday. After Raymond, who had 15 carries for 80 yards, started things off with a 6-yard scamper Thomas added a quick 16 yards on the ground. Bobcats defender Zach Shores came up with his first of two sacks against Thomas before the shifty quarterback showed off his moves. Thomas rumbled for 33 yards down to the Orangefield 14 after breaking out of an Orangefield gang-tackle. Raymond scored from 10 yards out two players later and Thomas added a two-point conversion giving East Chambers a 14-0 half-time lead. After Thomas scored on the Bucs’ initial drive of the second half, the Bobcats were all business and had several chances to make things interesting. Orangefield drove all the way down to the Bucs 9 yard line before losing a fumble to East Chambers’ Justin Devillier after Raymond played a great supporting cast member with the strip. All East Chambers could do with the extra possession was chew up the important clock before punting back to Orangefield. Orangefield wasted no time by scoring in just over three minutes’ time on Grangers’ 10-yard plunge. Derrick Evans’ PAT made it 21-7 with 6:26 left in the first. The score was set up by Helton’s first and only completion of the night, which turned out to be a big one. Helton hit receiver Devin Green in stride for 41 yards bringing Orangefield down to the East Chambers 10 yard line. East Chambers then had one for the gag reel by passing after getting the ball back on its 44 yard line with 6:21 to go and leading by 14. Thomas showed he was human and threw an interception into the waiting hands of Caleb Worthy. Jeremy Granger, who had 57 yards on 18 carries, got the Orangefield fans on their feet with a 34-yard gallop on the drive’s first play. Sophomore Jace Statum sprung Jeremy Granger with a vicious block. The Bobcats then churned up the rest of the yardage before Jeremy Granger went up the middle for his lone touchdown of the night. Evans’ kick made it 21-14 with 2:40 left. Orangefield’s defense then held its own again bye holding East Chambers to a turnover on downs when Possum LaFleur came up with the big stop on fourth down on Quentin Joseph. Orangefield could not close the deal on the comeback after Helton scrambled for 20 yards to start the drive. The next four Helton pass attempts fell incomplete, preserving East Chambers’ escape win. “We need to learn from this, take what we did tonight and forget about it,†Morrison said. “We want that first win tonight.†Ryan Granger knows if Friday’s second-half Bobcat team shows up in Splendora, the Wildcats are in trouble. “We definitely took a step forward,†Ryan Granger said. “We fought until the very end. We do that again next Friday, Splendora will not know what hit them.†-
St Pius 19 Vidor 13 Final/Comments

St. Pius traps Pirates, 19-13 By Jason Rollinson The Orange Leader VIDOR — Facing a 19-7 deficit, the Vidor Pirates scored a late touchdown to pull within six points of Houston St. Pius X. After a successful onsides kick along with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Panthers, it appeared the Pirates were on their way to a tremendous comeback. However, quarterback Roman Franklin fumbled the ball away with just over a minute left and St. Pius held on for a 19-13 win in non-district action at Ivan Croak Field in the first regular season game for both squads. The Pirates (0-1) used their option-running attack to wear down the Panther defense in the second half, but was unable to overcome costly fumbles throughout the game. Vidor, which totaled 207 yards of offense, with 185 coming on the ground, held St. Pius X — the defending TAPPS state champions — to just 259 yards after the Panthers starting quarterback, Billy Noonan, left the game in the first quarter with a possible concussion. He was a perfect 3-of-3 passing for 92 yards and a touchdown. Howard Risher, St. Pius’ starting running back, took over behind center and finished with 62 yards on 13 carries while tailback Derian Meredith was the team’s leading rusher with 69 yards on 13 totes. Franklin paced the Pirate running attack with 79 yards on 12 carries while running back Theron Reynolds took 16 handoffs for 43 yards. “You always want to come away with a win, but the kids gave us everything we could ask for and fought ‘til the end,†Vidor coach Jeff Mathews said. “We had six starters injured for this game and started eight sophomores, but they were thrown in the mix and we’re a better ballclub than we were two hours ago.†St. Pius X took an early lead with less than two minutes elapsed in the game when Noonan connected with Landon Johnson for a 59-yard deep route. The extra-point kick by Anthony Fera was good and the Panthers led 7-0. Vidor responded with a little trickery of its own. Facing a fourth-and-3 play from the St. Pius 16, the Pirates lined up in a swinging-gate formation to throw off their opponents. Franklin opted to throw a shovel pass to a wide-open Chris Teinert to put the Pirates on the scoreboard. Franklin’s extra-point kick tied the game at 7-7 with 1:05 left in the first half. “We brought that play in last year and took a chance on it,†Mathews said. “We thought they wouldn’t be able to cover and weren’t ready for it, and it just worked. They were expecting a dive up the middle and Roman alertly saw the open receiver.†St. Pius took the lead for good with 9:01 left in the third when Derian Meredith scooted 30 yards down the sideline for another six points. St. Pius then tacked on another score when Risher swept left on an option-play keeper for 26 yards, but the two-point conversion failed and the Panthers remained on top, 19-7 with 7:22 left in the game. Vidor made things interesting late in the game when Teinert pounced on a St. Pius fumble in the end zone to give the Pirates new life and pull within six points at 19-13. The extra-point kick sailed wide left, but Vidor’s last hopes were pinned on an onsides kick, which Vidor did happen to recover, only to fumble the ball away on the first play of the ensuing drive. “I felt like they were tired towards the end and figured we would be able to get 7 or 8 yards a carry,†Mathews said. “I thought their secondary was their strength and we wanted to exploit their weaknesses.†Vidor will travel to Class 4A Houston Jones on Thursday for a non-district matchup against the Falcons. “We’ve got a short week, but we’ll come back (today) and look at the film, correct our mistakes and get ready for the Falcons,†said Mathews. “We should be able to put this loss behind us.†-

Deweyville defense halts Rebels; Pirates rack up 268 ground yards By David Rollinson News/Leader Sports DEWEYVILLE — Sophomore running back Keeton Addison rushed for a game-high 127 yards on 20 carries, leading the Deweyville Pirates ground game to a 268-yard performance en route to a 21-0 blanking of Evadale in non-district action at Pirate Stadium. The Pirates pounded the ball left, right and up the middle as three other rushers gained more than 30 yards a piece to complement Addison. Cruz Thrailkille rushed for 44 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, while Stephen Gibson scooted for 46 yards and a score and quarterback Brandon Powell finished with 39 yards on seven totes. The Deweyville defense allowed just 113 yards, 30 on the ground and 83 through the air. The Pirates fireworks went off with just seven ticks left in the first half in Deweuville’s second game at its new stadium when senior linebacker Justin Morcum stepped in front of a Rebel pass and blew by the opposition for 75 yards down to the Evadale 5. Thrailkille took the final five yards for the score and Tim Swinney gave Deweyville a 7-0 lead with two seconds left in the first half. The Pirates never looked back in the second half, tacking on two more rushing scores as Addison and Gibson reached from 3 and 7 yards out, respectively. Deweyville preserved its shutout with three minutes remaining on a goal-line stand at the 11, keeping the Rebels from gaining any yards or points. The Pirates will play their third straight non-district home game next week when the High Island Cardinals travel to Pirate Stadium. -
