GM Littlefield out after another lost Pirates season PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates began to reshape their front office under new principal owner Robert Nutting by firing general manager Dave Littlefield on Friday. Littlefield's dismissal is effective immediately, the team said in a statement. A formal announcement will come at a news conference Friday afternoon. The decision comes after six-plus seasons in which the team showed little progress on the field or in its farm system. The firing came with only three weeks left in the season and the Pirates in their customary spot in last place in the NL Central, with a 61-79 record -- three losses away from a 15th consecutive losing season, one off the major league record. No decision on the status of Littlefield or second-year manager Jim Tracy had been expected until after the season. Managing general partner Kevin McClatchy, who has run the day-to-day operations since 1996, is resigning when the season ends and his successor was expected to evaluate Littlefield and Tracy. "It's tough," Tracy said upon hearing the news. "It's real tough. He's more than a friend to me." Littlefield, a former executive with the Marlins and Expos, succeeded Cam Bonifay midway through a 100-loss season in 2001 and was expected to make major changes in a team that had shown no headway since winning three division titles in the early 1990s. But Littlefield's efforts to rebuild the Pirates failed, and the Pirates never had fewer than 87 losses or finished higher than fourth in a full season during his stay. "After eight months of listening and analyzing the situation, it has become clear that this decision was necessary to move our organization forward," Nutting said in a statement. "While there are many bright spots for us to build from, I am not satisfied with the overall performance and progress that has been made. I'm committed to building a successful organization and this is an important step in that process." Nutting said he felt it was best to announce the move now rather than at the end of the season. "I felt the time was right to announce my decision to ensure that the organization is in the best possible position to attract the very best general manager candidates," Nutting said. "In addition to allowing us more time to search for a replacement, it should allow more time for our new general manager to make the necessary evaluations and staffing decisions." Brian Graham, Pirates senior director of player development, will serve as interim GM. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Thanks 87. -
D’ville not taking Evadale lightly Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — Without question, the Deweyville Pirates are breathing a big sigh of relief. After all, the Pirates coming off an emotional 8-6 victory over a tough Vinton (La.) team in what was their first-ever home game at their new Pirate Stadium. “I’m so proud of the kids because I think they got a big monkey off their backs last week,†said Pirate head coach Dwight Bickham. “They felt a lot of pressure with it being the first game in the new stadium and all. They can be very proud of beating a very sound football team. This week, they already look relieved and seem to be having more fun again.†The Pirates (1-0) will play host to an old rival in the Evadale Rebels (1-0) this week. The Pirates have had the Rebels’ number the last several years, including a 34-0 shutout victory last season, but Coach Bickham sees the Rebels as a much more formidable foe this season. “Evadale is very much improved,†Bickham said. “They really put the hurt on Colmesneil 45-7 last week. They do a lot of good things.†The Rebels return six starters on both sides of the ball from last year’s 4-6 unit. Junior quarterback Micah Stringer leads an explosive Evadale offense along with backs Justin Crain and Wes Massingill. “They run a lot of formations to keep you off-balance like the shotgun and two-back play,†Bickham said. “They have a couple backs that can burn you and a good quarterback. They like to run the toss and they also like that little swing pass. They’ll certainly keep our defense honest.†The Pirates chewed up a lot of yardage on the ground against Vinton. Sophomore Keaton Addison ripped off 166 yards on 19 carries. Cruz Thrailkille added 51 yards and Stephen Gibson added 49. That’s the good news for the Pirates. The bad news — they’ve lost running back/safety Kane Kachtik for the season with a knee injury. “Kane’s injury is so tough and it does hurt us as far as our depth goes because he was important on both sides of the ball,†Bickham said. “We’ve got some guys that can carry the load in the backfield still but we certainly can’t afford any more injuries because of our overall depth.†The Pirates hope to remain stingy on defense after limiting Vinton to a mere 153 total yards last week. “Defensively, we got after it pretty good,†Bickham said. “It’s not easy holding a team like Vinton to that many yards. Without a doubt, Evadale will certainly test us this week. We’ve got to be prepared for anything.â€

Week 1 East chambers at Orangefield predictions?
KFDM COOP replied to D-villefan's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
East Chambers (1-0) at Orangefield (0-1) ORANGEFIELD — In knocking off Sheppard, 35-0, in its season opener, East Chambers had 416 yards total offense, while all-state quarterback Tramain Thomas had a great 2007 debut by scoring four touchdowns on runs of 24, 21, two and one yards. The Bobcats will try to improve to 2-0 Friday night at Orangefield, a 35-12 loser to Buna in its opener. Thomas rushed for 89 yards on nine carries with his longest going for 36 yards, while completing 5-of-7 passes for 77 yards and no interceptions. While Thomas and his offensive teammates had their way with Sheppard, head coach Tony Valastro was really impressed with his team’s defense. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on defense and it showed.†The Bucs held Sheppard to just 116 total offensive yards. Valastro singled out the play of linebacker Isaiah White, and defensive backs Anthony Ortiz and Quentin Joseph. One of the big plusses in the win was the play of backup quarterback Trey Lambert. As the Bucs will keep their all-everything defensive back/quarterback Thomas on the field for every defensive play (including punts and kickoff returns), having a player like Lambert come in and give Thomas a breather at times is a positive. -
