Do the kids and coaches at WO-S deserve the finest in facilities? Absolutely!
Do I wish that they had all of the bells and whistles?  You bet!
Do I wish that every program in Southeast Texas had the indoor practice facilities, field turf on their fields and the state of the art video boards in the end zones? Without a doubt, yes!
That being said, the premise of this thread being that you have to have all of the bells and whistles to have a consistent winning program or to garner a state championship simply isn't the case.
In fact, let me pose the question this way.  If we all got our most ardent of wishes and EVERY program in the area had all of the above, could you say that any more programs would have brought home a title other than the 1 that was earned this season?  Having seen the teams, a lot of them being high quality teams, probably not.  You see, we here can have those desires and make our demands and covet the best.  That's okay, that is in part what this site is here for and I do it just as much, if not more than anyone.
Unfortunately, the respective school boards in the area don't operate with the unlimited funds that we wish that they would have.  They have limited, in some cases extremely limited, funds with which to take care of several priorities.  And, much as we wish this was not the case, athletics is not always the priority.  Such a sell is even harder to a resident of the school district who is told that the new athletic facility will results in hundreds, if not thousands, or more in taxes that they will have to dole out every year.
Will that doom the area to fewer state titles? Perhaps.  However, we can't blame local school districts if their response to such a scenario is "We'll just have to live with that."

While you do have a good point...athletics are some kids only way out so I disagree especially for schools thats in the inner city. Athletics have changed a lot of kids lives most of the teams that are really successful on the field/court it tends to translate in the classroom as well.

I don't know.  I heard that there was a school in Southeast Texas that has a football stadium that was built the same year I was born (1968).  They still play on grass manufactured by God and they don't have one of these exploding video scoreboards.  I do understand that in late December they did make one upgrade to their facilities...
A shiny new state championship trophy.
Although money helps, you can't always buy championships.

Mr. Green Jeans is hitting upon the truth. Look I am as positive a person as you can get on Kountze Athletics, but i have to be real at the same time. When a school distric spends appox 1/2 or less on each Athlete as they do another extra curricular activity and then when you look out across the field on Friday Nights and your opponent has 5 and 8 more coaches than you do...well 2+2=4 (athletics have been deemed non-essential) When your track program can't uniform everybody properly and Baseball and Softball cant buy field conditioner or even needed equipment but other programs can provide private tutorials to the tune of thousands of dollars (again athletics is deemed non-essential) when the community demands that the athletic program, in it's entirety, not just Basketball, be supported then and only then will you have a succesful program. Look at the successfull programs and look at the community support and demand...even when the success wains the participation does not because the community supports their high school athletics. This is not the fault of the coaches and certainly not the fault of the kids. If this honest statement makes you mad at me for saying it...then your part of the problem. I love to watch kids play sports and be successful, because it builds successful people.

Again, if you truly have a passion for something, you will let nothing stand between you and that goal. My son once had a coach that told him he was slow footed and wasn't going to make it. My son didn't listen. Today he plays college football.

Why do the kids refuse to play for Coach Hodges?  Is he too tough on them or do they just not like discipline?  When my son played ball he could've cared less who the coach was, he just truly loves and enjoys the game and he still does.

That is a great offer MossHill thanks!!!!!!Unfortunately not many will take the offer....There has been some good comments on this subject and all have been valid but we are all just fans doing what fans do..H-D is not what it once was no matter how much we wish otherwise and probably never will be again..There is not many great coaches beating  the door down anymore it is the sad truth. You have to give a coach time to build a program is true but when do you say his ideas are not working if you do not show results in any job you usually don't have one. No I am not a coach and would  not make a good one. To many people to please and to many that you can not please no matter what. I think we may make the playoffs this year in one of the bottom slots and hope that we go further as I do every year.I will be at the games cheering on my Bobcats either way.I know that Bobcat55 is a true fan and wants whats best for these kids same as every other fan wants for their team.I guess what I am trying to say is we all have our opinions (the one about Sabine Pass was just a little much but it was an opinion) and we as fans are not always gonna agree on whats best for a program and that is what makes the USA a great place !!!!!!!Texas High School Football is the greatest and if you have had the chance to experience it even if you lost every game you will still remember it with fondness...

Yall seem to be missing the point and principle of the matter. Let me answer a few of your questions and break this topic down with facts, not assumptions.
    Under the Barbay regime:
HD had over 50 kids show up for the first day of 2 a days. (Grades 9th-12th total)
HD had over 50 kids still participating at the start of the football season. JV & Varsity teams.

    Under the Slack regime:
HD had over 50 kids show up for the first day of 2 a days. (Grades 9th-12th total)
HD had over 50 kids still participating at the start of the football season. JV & Varsity teams.

    Under the Finney regime:
HD had over 50 kids show up for the first day of 2 a days. (Grades 9th-12th total)
HD had over 50 kids still participating at the start of the football season. JV & Varsity teams.

Under the Hodges regimes first season:
HD had over 40 kids show up for 2 a days (admitted lower numbers). (Grades 9th-12th total)
HD had a mere 25 kids still participating at the start of the football season. No JV team.

Under the Hodges regimes second season:
HD had roughly 25 kids show up to 2 a days. (Grades 9th-12th total)
HD had roughly 20 kids still participating at the start of the football season. No JV team again.

Here are the numbers broke down per grades:
Available Freshman boys: 17 total, only 7 participated.
Available Sophomore boys: 20, only 8 participated.
Available Junior boys: 24, only 4 participated.
Available Senior boys: 28 only 8 participated.
That breaks down to 89 total boys available in grades 9th-12th, only 27 participated, with 62 choosing to not participate.

Now that we see the current regime, was handed basically the same ingredients the prior regimes had, why are all these kids walking away from the program. It's not uncommon to have a turnover rate, but not at this drastic of a number.

    Now to answer direct questions:
Scatright question: "If we keep a two year revolving door on the position, and keep running off coaches because they don't run the offense we think they should run, we will never achieve the level of investment that it takes to build a program".
You missed the point totally, it has nothing to do with an offense, it's all about having a future at HD for our kids. The number up top should be alarming for all true Bobcats. No JV for 2 seasons straight kills our future, and strips young kids of their reps to get better, along with enjoying the game of football. Most eye opening is why are our young children choosing to walk away... I hope HD has a JV this season, I hope HD has a winning season under Hodges. Realistically HD could go 2-8 again and have a third season with no JV team. Bottom line is, I want to see our kids excited again and chomping at the bit to play football, to enjoy life as a student athlete, making life memories.

Old school, at HD 27 kids total in grades 9th-12th coming out is very uncommon and unacceptable... Oh and Scatright, there is and will always be interest in Coaching at HD.

Interesting.  Cant believe this post isn't getting more attention.  I make a comment about a team being bad and the board lights up like a Christmas tree.  Sabine Pass gets labeled the "one act gay mecca of effeminate dudes"...and nothing.
Note to self.  Better to call a group of kids effeminate than bad.  Got it.

Hurt our feelings never we think your funny old school (a little grumpy maybe)but still funny....Yes we are fans and yes when you talk about our team we get a little grumpy that's what true fans do win or lose we stand by our team...It's no difference than any die hard fan from any sport of any level all teams have some so keep posting and we will keep talking back and forth because after all is said and done it's just a game. Hopefully these kids will learn a few of life's lessons from playing it and become true fans of a team one day.

Agree, perfectly said. If HD plays the same style of offense this week(under center/power with Maughan) HD can upset AS. The key to victory, may be having the right amount of misdirection and outside plays called for Robinett. Gotta make teams fear Robinett on the outside, if they do that, Maughan runs wild up the middle. Still looking for a "true" 2 wedge type short yardage play, it could keep the chains moving and get our redzone percentage up. Also bringing a back in motion every time Maughan gets a dive play, would freeze LB's. Robinett on a jet sweep would be lethal. I was very impressed with the 2-point play calling last week..

Really depends on what Offense HD coaches choose to run this week. They started in the right direction against WH, but didn't go full out with it. They were still very predictable and WH actually shut them out in the second half. With that being said, If they mix it up with both backs if the back field then it should be a competitive game with the slight advantage to AS. If they (HD Coaches) choose to default back to the same old junk then it will be a run-away for AS. Playing at home running the right O, HD could sneak in a win here.

Can HD pull off the win vs AS? HD beat WH 30-14(was up 24-0), AS beat WH 39-8. A win by HD helps give themselves a chance at grabbing the 4th playoff spot, at the end of the season. HD is at home, and the Bobcats looked well oiled in all three phases Friday night. HD's coaches have made some great adjustments, the players are buying into the new looks. The young Bobcats are growing up before our eyes, they could have very well just layed down this season, after the rough start, but they are fighting and getting better. AS is a big physical team, they will bring the heat, HD will have to match their intensity.

I think if you are out there trying your best you earn respect never said it was entitled whether you are good or bad... I have always been a believer that you play your best 11 whether it's the same ones or not even the big schools...No I dont think that way at work the best should be compensated that way but from a management stand point even your least experienced employee is valuable..... I know i'm not gonna win this argument lol your as hard headed as me so i will just be quiet.. After thinking about it yes I understand what he was saying. These are kids not grown men and when you can get kids out doing sports it's a good thing todays generation just wants to  play games and have everything handed to them. The ones that work for it do have my respect even if they stink.......
