  1. shame on whoever the opponent is when td's boy is forced to play with his own age! by the way, I'm waiting for the rule change that will allow my boy to play "down". :D the kid would dominate.
  2. Osgood-Schlatter is a benign condition that causes no harm other than discomfort and possibly some mild bony deformity just below the "kneecap". Here's some info that might help. Sincerely, jesusfreak, MD What is Osgood-Schlatter disease? Osgood-Schlatter (say: "oz-good shlot-ter") disease is one of the most common causes of knee pain in young athletes. It causes swelling, pain and tenderness just below the knee, over the shin bone (also called the tibia). It occurs mostly in boys who are having a growth spurt during their pre-teen or teenage years. One or both knees may be affected. What causes Osgood-Schlatter disease? It is believed that Osgood-Schlatter disease results from the pull of the large powerful muscles in the front of the thigh (called the quadriceps). The quadriceps join with the patellar tendons, which run through the knee and into the tibia, to connect the muscles to the knee. When the quadriceps contract, the patellar tendons can start to pull away from the shin bone, causing pain. This problem becomes more noticeable during activities that require running, jumping or going up or down stairs. It's most common in young athletes who play football, soccer or basketball or are involved in gymnastics and ballet. Osgood-Schlatter disease usually goes away with time. When your child stops growing, the pain and swelling should go away because the patellar tendons become much stronger. Only rarely does Osgood-Schlatter disease persist beyond the growing stage. Your doctor may want to examine your child and get a knee x-ray to make sure the pain isn't caused by something else. How is Osgood-Schlatter disease treated? Your doctor may tell your child to cut down on time spent playing sports until the pain has been gone for 2 to 4 months. Your child may need to avoid any activity that requires deep knee bending. Your child may also need to run at a slower speed or for a shorter amount of time and jump less often. How should my child's pain be treated? If pain develops, ice should be applied to some areas. Using ice can help prevent swelling and pain. The knee should be wrapped with an elastic bandage and elevated. A memory aid that may help remind you of these four basic treatment steps is the word "RICE": R = Rest the knee from the painful activity. I = Ice the affected area for 20 minutes, 3 times a day. C = Compress the painful area with an elastic bandage. E = Elevate the leg. If these treatment steps don't work, your doctor may suggest that your child wear braces that will reduce tension on the patellar tendons and quadriceps. Pain relievers such as aspirin or ibuprofen (some brand names: Advil, Motrin) may reduce the pain and swelling. Your child may need to use crutches for a while to allow complete healing. As a last resort, your child's doctor may suggest surgery. How long will it take for my child's knee to get better? It may take several weeks or months for the pain to completely stop. When the pain is completely gone, your child may slowly return to his or her previous level of activity. Is there anything that can be done to prevent the disease from happening again? Your doctor may prescribe some exercises such as straight-leg raises, leg curls and quadriceps contractions for your child to do at home or with a physical therapist to strengthen the quadriceps and hamstrings. This should help prevent further problems. While your child is recovering, ice should be applied to the area after exercise to prevent pain and swelling. In most people, Osgood-Schlatter disease goes away on its own with a little rest and time. If your child ignores or plays through the pain, the disease may get worse and may be more difficult to treat.
  3. if that's true, I hope the boys come out and have some fun friday night... Good luck bears ( players AND coaches ). There are still many out there rooting you on!
  4. Never said change doesn't need to happen... just making light of the fact that someone would say the entire athletic department is in trouble. As for me not knowing the "whole story"... i'm sure I don't, but I bet I know far more than you give me credit for knowing.
  5. really??? I guess we better call the LCM volleyball team who is sitting alone at the top of the district in 1st place and let them know. oh yeah, when we are done we better call Griff and warn him too.
  6. When I first heard of this story, I literally got sick at my stomach. As a father of a high school cheerleader, my initial reaction was to think about my daughter. The thought someone raping my own daughter it too much to fathom. It wasn't long after however, that I started thinking about my younger son. Then I started thinking about him. What if, he was wrongly accused? And then I started thinking about how bad that would be and how severely his life would be affected. There are no words that can describe how bad this situation is for EVERYONE involved: the girl, the boys, the parents, the students, the town of Silsbee. This list goes on and on. I cannot speak for the rest of you but as for me, I will NOT judge either side. It's up to the legal system. I will pray for everyone involved and have faith that God will, in his own way, console all those affected by this tragedy. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
  7. I don't think there is any confidentiality or HIPAA laws that they are concerned with. as a professional, "chip" should be.
  8. not sure this thread is appropriate... nor am I sure "chip" should be giving all that info out to be placed on a public board. There is much debate whether athletic trainers are subject to HIPPA regulations. Ethically, I disagree with giving out that much information UNLESS you have the parents' permission.
  9. Hey Ref, I tell you what is really impressive. The umpires that make the calls on the close plays in baseball. I can look at it in slow motion and have to see it several times, to only find out that they were correct about the call. Football is a little different for me because I'm one of those not so smart fans that can only watch the guy with the ball. You really miss a big part of the game doing that but I can't help myself. Maybe I need the medication. Got anything for that "freak"? there is no medicine that will fix you td. sorry.
  10. medication? did someone say medication? what do they give for that? I would give 100mg of ... oh, never mind we need a vet... we are talking about treating a zebra.
  11. td, is that "butt" as in the verb... or "butt" as in the adjective? :D
  12. dude ( as you put it ), I'm not even from WOS. I'm just saying you will have your hands full. Once again, good luck to both teams.
  13. my money's on wos blue... not sure how you coach against speed AND size. Good luck to both teams. Also, this being the first "division" game, I guess it ups the ante' a little.
  14. someone who knows more about the "mechanics" behind how a high school runs please shed some light on this subject: When a new A.D. ( aka football coach ) is hired at a high school, how much power does he have in hiring/bringing-in new coaches? How many can he typically bring with him? I ask this question because some have blamed their coach's failure on lack of support from the administration...
  15. great post Slam... i agree with you 100%. by the way, LCM volleyball is very exciting to watch... i believe they still only have one district loss. Even if you know NOTHING about volleyball, go watch. i guarantee you will enjoy it. Regardless winning/losing, I would like to see all the sports supported at every high school. Is there anything more exciting as a high school athlete than competing in front of a full house... in front of your friends and family? For most of these athletes, this is the last time they will compete in front of an audience...
  16. no matter where you are from.... you gotta "kiss the babies." ESPECIALLY, if you are not winning. Many a losing coach has stuck around longer than their record should allow because they were well liked. My opinion is that the AD has to be seen throughout the district... at middle school football games, freshman volleyball, tennis, school board meetings, junior high pep rallies. But, has TD would say... that's just my opinion.
  17. The Junior high has its own field at 6765 FM 1130 ( also called meeks drive ) From I-10: Take the 16th street exit in Orange (HWY 87). Take the I-10 feeder road traveling West and turn right onto Meeks Drive. Travel about 4 miles going straight at the 4-way stop and Little Cypress Jr. High is on the left. From Mid-County: Travel HWY 87 North through Orange and take the I-10 feeder road traveling West and turn right onto Meeks Drive. Travel about 4 miles going straight at the 4-way stop and Little Cypress Jr. High is on the left. From Buna: Travel South on HWY 62 and turn left on FM 1130. Travel approximately 10 miles. Little Cypress Jr. High is on the right. From Newton: Travel South on HWY 87. Take FM 3247 west (MLK). Travel about a half a mile and turn right at the 4-way stop. Little Cypress Jr. High is on the left.
  18. so true... just cuz the team is struggling, let's not overlook the heart and talent that is on the team... #20 hunter gonzales and #34 blake perry , are two sophomores that play their hearts out... I challenge you nederland fans to watch those two young men tonight and applaud them when they deserve it... there are others, like #80 ( a freshman ), but #20 and #34 definitely stand out.
  19. the two orangefield junior tackle teams have merged... Little cypress green will now play png during week 3.... and orangefield will have a "bye" this weekend.
  20. My intention was not to spread rumors... the initial post was intentionally vague, and meant to start a discussion about "quitting" in general. There has been some very good insight given so far, and I hope this discussion is NOT censored. Many of us on this sight are parents... and some of what I have read so far could be helpful to me should I have to discuss this topic at some point with my son. Hopefully, if the thread stays up, the replies will discuss quitting in general... and not point fingers at any particular schools.
  21. one thing to think of... quitting rarely is "just an individual decision." it almost always has it effects on the team members you leave behind.
  22. there are rumors of LCM players quitting... but that is only rumors. It made me think about quitting in general. Just the word "quitter" brings with it alot of emotion and opinion. Just wondering what others think about it...
