  1. The conversation in question.. (the one I was in), was comparing Coach Briles to his predecessor implying that because Briles had won state titles previously that he was automatically a better coach. But actually, no. My opinion on what makes a good coach is someone that gets the most out of their players or more. I think that wins/losses is a fraction of what makes someone good. I personally think some of the best coaches to have ever lived have never won a championship. It's easy to win with better players than the team you're playing against.
  2. I halfway expected a response similar to that. So by your definition, Phil Danaher wouldn't be considered an elite coach? Even though he has won more football games than any other Texas high school football coach to have ever coached. Good to know. I'll be sure and send UIL and email asking them to put an asterisk by his name in the coaching Hall of Fame. Also, you do realize that there are quite a few coaches to have won a state championship and then never even gotten close again, right? Most of them, in fact. So.. were they only "elite status" that one year? Because I personally know of coaches that have won a state title and missed the playoffs in their careers after doing so. I just wanna make sure I'm understanding how to describe a coach when someone asks me. And yeah.. let's compare the game they played against each other, because that definitely closes the case. Not surprised by that response either, btw. Someone who thinks that winning a state championship makes someone a better coach than someone that hasn't would definitely think that the results of one game also proves that someone is a better coach. To be clear: I'm not pro Finney or anti Briles, just exposing some ignorance.
  3. Is that your measuring stick for what makes a good coach?
  4. Not just that.. Finney went to Winnsboro and took them further than Briles took MV. And as a 4 seed.
  5. It takes a lot of years and a lot of good seasons to get to that many.
  6. I saw on Instagram that the WH coach got his 700th win with this one.
  7. Not when it comes to the skills required to be a good basketball player.. compared to skills required to be a good football player. No offense.. but just being fast, just being big, or just being strong means nothing on a basketball court. Any of the three can make you a stud on a football field, though. That’s what I meant.
  8. Normally I agree with what you post.. but as a basketball guy.. not this time
  9. I’ll go ahead and get the argument kicked off.. I went over the weekend for the first time. There is absolutely zero question that ALL UIL state football championship games need to be at Cowboys stadium. Wow.. what a venue. NRG or the Alamodome shouldn’t even be suggested. I have no doubt that every kid in the state would rather play there regardless of travel.
  10. Bold move? You telling me that was the only choice? If a freshman is the backup then who was the backup last year?
  11. A lot can happen between spring and August.. it seems to me that the extra week in August would be better because you have a truer picture of what you'll be working with. Just my opinion.
  12. That was a great team. I was partial to the other kid.. Benson I think (can't remember exactly). That kid was incredible for that team.. quietly incredible because of the attention Angel got. .
  13. I knew Gunter defense was going to give them issues.
  14. I think they’re gonna be in for a rude awakening with the Gunter defense.
  15. I mentioned players. Gene pool is included in that.. you could also throw in transfers.
  16. players + coaches + strength of schedule = wins. players > coaches strength of schedule > players and coaches. Even bad coaches can win games with great players. Even bad coaches can win with an easy schedule. Good coaches will win when preparation/experience come into play with comparable talent. EVEN GOOD COACHES CAN NOT WIN (deep runs) WITHOUT GOOD PLAYERS I don't care what you say.. sometimes graduation is the difference between a state contender and struggling to make playoffs. Sometimes UIL cutoffs/alignments make the difference between winners and losers.
  17. Some people appreciate brutally honest comments. It's me.. I'm some people.
  18. If it’s all about coaching then why doesn’t WOS win state every year? Was he a worse coach this year than the years they won it?
  19. Recently found this: [Hidden Content]
  20. I have no doubt that they have some great facilities. I've seen their indoor practice field as well as some of their gyms. It's nice. But back to my statement.. I'm pretty sure they don't want any low income housing.
  21. I don’t think the good people of Mont Belvieu want affordable housing in the school district. Seems to me that they’re content with that being Dayton’ thing.
  22. We've all seen that. A lot of schools have that level of consistency (other than winning state titles). There's something else... You think Aledo has a higher level of consistency than Calallen High School... who's been under the leadership of Phil Danaher since what...1984? Even Cornel Thompson at WOS has been there forever. What exactly are you talking about when you say consistency?
  23. People will say it's because of money.. maybe so.. but there are also poor town around the state that are just making school/athletics more of a priority somehow. I'll say this, it's slowly catching fire. There are more and more schools around setx updating/replacing those old worn down facilities with nicer stuff.
