Let's see.  Lumberton was one game from making the playoffs this year (prob much better than most predicted), and the coach gets fired?  He has also done a good job building the under levels of the basketball program.  Coach Wueller has put them in contention to be playoff contenders for the foreseeable future, and he is replaced by a girl's coach with no experience on the boy's side?  Sounds like a good 'ole boy network hire to me.  I hope the AD will hold himself to the same standard that he has Coach Wueller.
Lumberton has been to the playoffs ONCE in 44 seasons...ONE TIME! ANYTHING that the AD does would be an improvement. Perhaps they NEED someone in there that knows the community, and will attract more players..Wueller, I am sure, did all he could do, but if you can't make the playoffs with FOUR teams going...At least ONCE....It may be time for a change.
I beg to differ with your statement.  Have seen multiple instances where the AD brings in someone with a football background to coach basketball (not saying this is the case in this instance) and that never works.
Nash,
Do you agree with the rest of DV's logic?

    DV,
When was it that Lumberton went to the playoffs?  Do we know who the coach was during that time and were there any notable players during that coach's time at the school?

We were robbed n you know it.  The year prior, the same GTown players were in 5A.  Had SC got by GTown, we would have been dumping gatoraid n scheduling a parade from Humble to Beaumont.

No one is talking about any other Humble ISD school. SC is the hottest ticket in town. You hate our success.  Just move to Vidor, brew ur own moonshine, and marry your foxy cousin already.
So by your logic SC would have beaten a team that stomped GTown? Hmm... Guyer would have scored 60+ on SC
You misunderstood his post, ram0524. If SC had beaten GTown, SC would have been celebrating with Gatorade baths and a huge parade because they would have had won two playoff games in a row. They've never done that before, you know.

Of course, SC would have lost to Angleton the next weekend.
I’m curious as to what the reason for loosing in 2014 will be when SC has an entire season in 5A!

BREAKING NEWS!!!  SC HAS BEEN ROBBED AGAIN BY THE 5A BANDITS!!
    ;D ;D

Please hurry and remove that post.  You seem too nice for the insults you are about to receive.

Dustoff... I have 4 words for ya.... "Bull In The Ring".... outlawed now... but back in the day it taught you how to keep your head on a swivel for sure.... LOL
Ahh yes.  Bull in the ring and kill the man with the ball, both very effective I agree.  IMO, you could still do some of these drills if you just did it without helmets and pads.  With helmets, many players want to go for the knockout shot in the head.  We had some tackle football games in the neighborhood as teenagers that were more physical than a full contact high school practice today.  And we did it without leading with our heads and without targeting anyone's head.  That's the biggest difference.

Coach Mitchell, was my sons coach,  great job!    Good luck Coach,  seems you'll need it,  Get the parents behind you and you will be successful.
It sounds like the previous coach would have done well but like someone else said, with a new AD comes new coaches.  And I'm sure the new coach will be fine.
  5.
The act of tackling does not cause head/neck injuries. The act of poor or improper tackling causes head/neck injuries.

They can limit the contact all they want, but that in and of itself will not solve the problem.
GCMPats,
Do you think hitting is being limited because they want to reduce injuries or because they are trying to address the number of new CTE cases that are discovered each year?  Let me give you a quick physics lesson.  If one object (a brain) is traveling at about 20 mph and the body that it is traveling in suddenly stops on impact, the brain keeps going and sloshes against the front of the skull.  And it doesn't matter if you use perfect form or horrible form, you cannot alter that fact.  So, the only way you can have a positive impact on the number of CTE cases in the future is to try and reduce the # of times the brain gets sloshed around.  Plain and simple.  We can talk about how to maintain good technique without full speed drills all you want, but you can't argue that reducing the amount of hitting during practice will help with CTE.

I'll lay odds that this will increase the number of injuries on Friday nights.

Tackling is a lost art. The teams that coach it up, win.
Yep!
all though I agree  on your above statements.. most teams have been scaled back to this for awhile now... me i believe you have to have full contact for the body to learn how to protect itself on a 2nd nature status.... just like breathing... your body has to learn how to take a hit... which muscles to tighten... which ones to loosen... and it will get use to repairing itself over a weeks time.... if you don't think that is a true statement ... ( as much as I hate to say it being a Cowboys fan ) look at the Steelers and Ravens.... they hit more then anytime in the league during the season... and they are the least hurt.... or at least they were in the Cowher days... now that they have slacked off they have more and more on the injury report....

but back on subject most teams are all ready in this mode....
It's a lose/lose situation.  If you don't hit a lot and have physical practices, then it translates to poor tackling and blocking on friday night.  If you do hit a lot and go full speed most of the week, then the ones you have left are really sound fundamentally.  But depending on who you lose during the week, it can be devastating to that team's season.  If you don't have the numbers in your program, then it affects you the most.  You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
How much time a week during the season do you think coaches spend on "Tackling" drills? How many teams you know have multiple, full speed, game simulation scrimmages during the week during the season?
I'm well aware of the fact that this ruling means nothing to most programs because most programs don't do much hitting already.  I thought this discussion had now moved to what impact 'less contact' during the week has had on friday night injuries and poor blocking and tackling.  We've probably all researched CTE and seen it in the news, so we should not be surprised at how practices, and games, have changed.  Being a former football player and having kids who play football, I will accept poor tackling for a healthy brain when they are finished playing.

I like this quote from the article (we discussed this on a recent thread),
Neumann gives plenty of credit to his student athletes, but he said the real key is that so many of the young men and women at Nederland choose to play multiple sports.

“We’ve had some exceptional athletes come through here and they’ve been exceptional in more than one sport,” Neumann said. “They bring that talent, but the other players around them, who might not be as gifted, tend to rise to their higher level. We’ve always encouraged our athletes to pursue more than one sport. Sometimes, it’s difficult to do, but our coaches are all great at supporting that and helping our crossover athletes.

“We discourage specialization. We want them to do all that they can do. That’s a key ingredient to our success. If our players weren’t competing in so many sports, if they were specialized more, I don’t know that we’d have as much success as we have had.”
Should I put this on the baseball and basketball threads?  Maybe it's not the football people who need to read it.

We are 80 days away from the start of the Texas High School Football Season and today is.....  Kamehameha Day
Aloha! It’s Kamehameha Day! In Hawaii, today is a public holiday that celebrates Kamehameha the Great—the monarch who established the unified Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. During this time period, Hawaii was the only nation that remained independent while the rest of the Polynesian islands were taken over by colonial powers. Kamehameha was nicknamed “the Napoleon of the Pacific” for this achievement.

To celebrate Kamehameha Day, Hawaiians attend carnivals, floral parades, and horse races. There is also a large hula competition that attracts hula companies from all over the world.

I liked Iced Tea Day better.  Just saying.

    2008. Donovonn Young.
So thats why you so envious of Katy, wasnt he at Humble before he transferred? Makes sense now.  ::)
Donovan Young wouldn't have played at North Shore. They had Tracy Woods and Tim Cornett who went to Miami(OH) and UNLV. Cornett was the backup at North Shore and started as a true freshman at UNLV.
Yes he would of.  D. Young could of started for what ever school he wanted to.  He was a freak of nature.  When he showed up at Humble as a freshman he was 5'11 190 lbs.  When he left katy he was 6'0 215lbs and ran 4.6.    That kid could ball.
What??? 6' 215 and 4.6. There's 50 kids like that walking down Wallisville right now.Cornett was 6' 190 and 4.4 and was the backup. T.Woods was the 200+ pound banger so no, Young wouldn't have gotten on the field much at all. We're talking about a kid who's second best offer was North Texas after rushing for 2000 yards. I guess you think Aundre Dean could play too. Adam Taylor is another back who won't do much in college. Don't think because these guys put up a bunch of yards behind offensive lines where they don't get touched until they're six yards down the field that they're big time backs. There's not a player on Katy's roster who could've started at North Shore this year besides Matt Dimon and a big guard they had.
No theres not.

This is a stupid argument.  you aren't going to submit to reason, instead you will side with ridiculous assumptions based on outcomes that encompass far more then just how tall and fast someone is.      Theirs more to a d1 prospect and recruiting then his raw ability.    DY  experienced "issues"  during his recruitment.   I can tell you in absolute confidence, everyone knocked on his front door.  In the world of recruiting though, coaches scare easy.... The lack of offers was not his fault directly, lets just put it that way.
I don't know what's worse, the fact that you are posting slander about a kid's family on this site, or that you say something as stupid as "can tell you in absolute confidence" right before you post on a public forum.  SMH

I like camps, that's why I think the quality of play is where it is now on the sub-high school levels. I also like the full contact camps around the intermediate age, it gives kids that didn't play in a good little league or not at all a jump on the type contact he'll be seeing once all the restrictions are removed. The new Heads Up camps are pretty good about teaching proper technique which is most of what they do anyway. I'm also a huge fan of the new high school level camps you attend on university campuses. These can be a catch 22 however because while they seperate kids with comparable production on the field, they also expose the kids who've had great production but have been the benefactor of a good system or weaker competition. These camps are often the first time the local high school star is just a face in the crowd or a number on a jersey. Either way as previous poster have said, it's better than getting no work at all. My overall view is that camps do wonders for kids, even going to the smaller camps can get you a look which you may not have gotten otherwise. Coaches also talk, so if you're not a particular team's cup of tea a good word could be put in for you here or there.
Sounds like kids that have the opportunity to attend camps have an edge.
Its possible, but I know kids that went to camps every year and go no where, and others that never attend camps and go to D1 schools. If you got it, you will get a ride, if not, a camp wont give it to you. The saddest thing I have seen is the kids that got it, but are two dumb to get in the school. Education is the most important.
Good post Horns.  But let me add to that.  The ones that don't go to camps and go  D1 is because of their 'potential', not because of how good they are in high school.  If a kid is 6'4" 260 and has good speed/feet, he can go D1 because they know by looking at his frame, he can be a 5th year senior in college weighing 300 and running sub 5.0 40s.  Unless HD's son grows another few inches, he won't fall into that category and would benefit greatly by attending camps.  I also like the post about speed camps.  There is no substitute for speed and quick feet at any position.

Until his last couple of years of high school, I would focus on the smaller camps that give more instruction in smaller groups.  Big school, 'showcase' camps serve a purpose but it's not to make a kid better.  JMO

On a serious note, HD's RB/LB Darrell Lavalais(District MVP), DE/OL Ken Lavalais(Defensive MVP 6'3 230lbs) and DE/OL Kyle Hopkins(Sophomore 6'4 260lbs) have all received letters. Houston was one of Hopkins letters. Kicker Dustin Welch was specials teams MVP of district, kid hits 45 yard field goals at ease. Welch will kick on Saturdays.
What kind of speed do the 3 DE/OL players have?  Unless it's 4.6 or faster, they better focus on OL to play at the next level.

I will go out on a limb and predict HJ will finish top 2 in the district. He has already made a big impact as far as attitude, excitment, work ethic, and enthusiasm...
