So you are saying that Hefner is not a D-1 player?

You need to make sure you contact all those D-1 coaches that are offering him full rides. It seems they are wasting their time and school money.

Question, did you think Jace Miguez was a D-1 player?

Not saying he doesn't have D1 potential. He has things you can't teach. Height, High IQ, good skill set and great jumping ability but there are also other parts of his game that needs work. Like more consistent shooting from 3 and mid range. I'm sure most of the schools that want him, feel they can get him to his full potential, which is what a lot of scouts look for. Also playing for a high profile AAU team helps.

And No, I did not think Miguez was a D1 player. He was a great offensive player. However, I do feel he wouldn't of had 9pts vs PNG.

So what you are saying is that a kid in high school can’t have a phenomenal defensive night against a great B-ball player especially if they are from PNG or BH. Also, you are  saying that Hefner is not a D1 player. Well if you have ever watched him play he is legit. His supporting cast had a bad night tonight and couldn’t take up the slake. Nederland is young and are just learning how to play when another team takes away their star player. But still give a kid praise when they deserve it.

Not taking anything away from PNG or BH. They did a great job defending Hefner. If you remove Hefner on this team and replace him with Weisbrod or J'covon Brown do they lose? Do they score less than 9 pts? If Hefner gets the praise when they win, then he should take the heat when they lose. IMO... there is no reason a D1 player still doesn't do his thing vs anyone, not just PNG and BH defenders. I have watched him play several times and he needs to be more consistent. He has a ton of upside but he needs to show up every night.

Apparently Coach, some of the locals don’t appreciate a good defensive player.  Like when Ltown held Bridges of LCM down to 8 points when he was Avg about 28 a game.  A good defender is worth his/her weight in gold.

I think you all are missing what I'm really saying. My guess would be that PNG and BH both don't have D1 caliber players but yet they shut down a D1 prospect. All I'm saying is a D1 player doesn't let someone shut them down.  No excuse for BH or PNG to hold Hefner under double digits in scoring.

Yes they did, but not much with the rest of the team...  As compared to the other dominant Ozen teams from before.  And Ozen had some dominant teams under him... My point is he did a great job coaching that '07 team.  I was impressed as I seen them March through the playoffs.  I remember thinking, this team...  No way they are good enough to get past 3 rounds.  I was so wrong...

Kris is the truth. That guy can play, probably one of the best to play for Ozen.

Jealousy?  Not at all.  I simply am taking the wait and see approach.  I was told a while ago that it was like watching Colton Wiesbrod all over again.  Huge shoes to fill.  I'm just waiting to see it.  I was told one of the best prospects in the nation for the class.  I'm just waiting to see it, that's all.  But jealous is definitely not the word at all...

He's better than Weisbrod imo. Hefner's skill set and athletic ability is far beyond Weisbrod. Weisbrod makes a bigger impact on the game due to his size. 99.9% of Weisbrod points was layups and free throws. He would get high percentage shots and he had a lot more around him as well.  I believe when it's all said and done, Hefner will be the best to ever wear a Nederland jersey.

Both are SETX coaching greats for good reason.   I think there’s a difference between someone making an argument that Boutte  is the best coach in the region and someone implying Hefner isn’t THAT good.  It’s night and day different.  One is arguable, the other is asinine.

(And by the way, he’s probably not at the top of my coaching list either but he certainly has a resumé where you can make that case.)

I agree, i wasn't trying to compare the two but a good opportunity to bring up the coaches. I've just heard a lot of Bmt folk give English grief for years. IMO he does more with less than any coach in the area. I think there was only 1 time where these two have played each other where English had the most talented team, and English won both times they faced that year.  IMO WB had a more talented team tonight but English has the best player and we seen how that played out.

that just goes to show you he is not as special as PNG people make him out to be.

he is just special because he goes to PNG

Put to you this way. If RJ was FBM QB and there QB played for PNG the score would still be the same.  They simply have a lot more to work with. At this level it takes a whole team not one outstanding player.

Memorial still has championship pedigree on that team.  I think they'll be ridiculously good next year as well. Memorial also won't be lacking defense.  A defense that Nederland had NOTHING for in district play.... And no need to mention Hefner in this debate because obviously you have no clue how he fared against Memorial this year.

I'm aware of his struggles this past season vs Memorial. That was a state championship team with a lot of seniors that have played 3 years of basketball. I will admit that Memorial will have a good post that has a ton of potential that could cause a lot of issues for Nederland but to be completely honest I think they split next year but I hope we get the double dip.

  9. 1 hour ago, BMTSoulja1 said:

And the district is NOT down.  It's shaping up like we all knew it would.  We knew going in this year that Memorial would be the team.  We knew Central and Ozen would battle #2/3.  And we knew Nederland would finish 4th.  (well, I lied.  A certain few folks thought Nederland would run the district, another story another day)

I would have to honestly say,  Central isn't the team they use to be either. However, they didnt fall as far as Ozen.

The sad thing is that they will combine next year and I think that hurts both schools. Now they will play 6A (which I think they should of already been playing..other topic) and we all know who the winner of that will be. Boutee! All the kids from 8th grade will enroll at Westbrook that are basketball kids. IMO.. it's hard to pass up playing for a coach like that, especially if your in the same classification. It will be interesting to see how it all works out. I wounder what the name of the school will be. I say Eastside Hurricanes.

Were you at the same game, they only had 8 turnovers for the game . Nederland got back into the game because of 10 missed free throws down the stretch. If this is the weakest Ozen team ,guard play Etc etc how does Nederland lose by double digits then. Ozen have one starter playing from last year ,4 new players starting on varsity for the time I think they are doing pretty well. Sweep your own porch before you try and seeep someone else’s :)

Yes I was and most of those turnovers were caused during the Nederland press and yes Ozen missed a lot of free throws. It's no secret that Nederland and Ozen are both down this year. The point was made to what i said earlier in my post that there is a Big 2 this year not a Big 3. It's not a knock on any of the players, it's just a case on how strong Ozen normally is in years past and this Ozen team is far from that. The same can be said for Nederland as well. Ozen looks young to me, so they will probably be back to Ozen form in a year or 2 if they don't combine them with Central.

ONLY because of injuries...  Remember, they were able to knock off a strong West Brook team at full strength...

And they have the new coach...

That win was early and I think a full strength Ozen team gets handled pretty easy by West Brook now. Ozen also has everyone back but 1 correct?

When was the last time you seen a mid county team able to press Ozen and have success? Nederland started pressing them late and was causing some turnovers. Ozen's guard play is the weakest it's probably ever been IMO.  Next time Nederland plays Ozen I hope they press them the entire game.  This would hopefully also get Nederland some easy baskets, it was hard for Nederland to score in the zone of Ozen.

I don’t think any (maybe one) of the supporting cast would start for any of your “Big 3” if that is what you are asking. Not a knock on those kids, if anything it’s a compliment to the Big 3.

Sorry to disappoint but there is no Big 3 this year. You have a Big 2 in Mem, and Central. This is the weakest Ozen team I've ever seen.

I think it’s tough to rank them. PNG is obviously the best offense, PAM and Nederland both have good defenses but the edge would probably go to PAM based off of the speed. I think Nederland is the best overall team though.

Your correct, it's very hard to rank them but I try to think of it as a best 2 out of 3. If each team played each other this way I think it comes out the way I have it.

Vidor got Central at the right time. If they played Central later in the year, Central would of got them. IMO
