  1. I like Dayton's chances to win their first playoff game, and that's as far as I'd go at this point. They're certainly talented enough to go all the way, but it only takes one slipup to end their season, so hopefully they'll take it one game at a time and not get caught looking down the road.
  2. The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres continue to make progress in trade negotiations around pitcher Jake Peavy, but at the same time, San Diego is talking with the Chicago Cubs about the All-Star -- with the Padres and Chicago engaging a third team as part of their proposals. Some sources believe that a trade of Peavy, while not imminent, is inevitable, and could occur prior to Thanksgiving. The Padres are in the midst of a significant payroll cut: If San Diego -- which withdrew a contract offer to closer Trevor Hoffman on Monday night -- eventually trades both Peavy and Brian Giles, as expected, then the team's 2009 payroll will be about half of what it was in 2008. The Braves and Padres have settled on two pieces of the package that Atlanta would send to San Diego -- shortstop Yunel Escobar and outfield prospect Gorkys Hernandez. The Braves likely would include one of two young pitchers, either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes. The two sides are at odds over the other pieces in the deal; the Padres are known to have interest in young pitcher Jeffrey Locke. The Cubs and Padres have talked about a deal built around Josh Vitters, the Cubs' top pick from 2007. But unlike the Braves, Chicago is not steeped in pitching, and so the Padres and Cubs are in the process of drawing in a third team to their talks, and that third team would be the side that would flip the pitching necessary to San Diego, in order to make the deal work for the Padres. Peavy, 27, won the 2007 Cy Young Award, and went 10-11 with a 2.85 ERA in 2008. He is signed through 2013, and currently, he has a full no-trade clause and the right to veto any proposal. The Braves and Cubs are among the teams that he would consider, as he has indicated to the Padres. During the process of considering possible deals for Peavy, the Padres have talked with numerous teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros and New York Yankees.
  3. the deal's done, but the details are not. just saw it on espn.com
  4. Matt assisted on Denver's only goal in a 1-0 win over Air Force on Saturday. The win, combined with a New Mexico loss, clinched a conference championship for Denver. Denver now awaits the announcement of the 48-team field for the Div. 1 NCAA tourney.
  5. Waldrup ended the regular season with two goals and two assists... UT-Tyler won the ASC tournament championship, and have advanced to the NCAA's. They host a first round game against the University of Dallas on Thursday.
  6. an average closer for a top-notch outfielder???
  7. umm... go mavericks?
  8. I mispoke my bad .wasn't trying to start anything. Good luck to him and his bright future no worries. all is forgotten.
  9. sounds like a solid start to the season! way to go, guys!
  10. actually, in your first post you did. you're right about him being back next year. nobody in the district is going to look forward to facing him.
  11. i wouldn't put to much stock in that at this point. even if he did take a shot to the knee, anybody who's played football knows that you're going to take some knocks. If his knee was already in as bad of shape as it's sounded like it was, it might not take much more than a bad cut or incidental contact to make it a lot worse.
  12. at one point or another, there have now been over 900 people on this list, and 59 are still listed as missing. No word on what happened to the other 850. As far as I know, the highest deathtoll in any article i could find for Texas was 33. I've heard a lot of rumors, and if even 1 out of 5 of them are true, you could multiply that toll by 5 and it might still be short. This whole thing still reeks of a coverup. I've talked to a firefighter who personally found/witnessed five or more bodies being found in Orange. I never heard a word about any of those victims in the media. I guess we are also supposed to assume that even though a huge chunk of Bridge City stayed for the storm, only a single person died when most the town was underwater. Also, i guess we should assume that only 2 or 3 bodies were found in and around Crystal Beach and Gilchrest, even though hundreds stayed, and probably 90% of the homes there were destroyed. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
  13. yeah, parker's injury is a huge blow for them.
  14. that's one hell of a performance!
  15. i'll be rooting for it to happen.
  16. guess that's settled...
  17. I also have to give Lumberton a lot of credit. I was one of your doubters at the beginning of the season, and you guys have been impressive throughout. Good luck in the playoffs, maybe ya'll can make another deep run.
  18. that's just silly. Dayton wanted this rematch. I find it hard to believe that they would be excited about missing lumberton.
  19. i strongly dislike the spurs. they make me want to punch babies. i wish them a terrible season.
  20. How about "still-in-shock"?
  21. The San Diego Padres are focusing on three National League teams as they attempt to trade ace pitcher Jake Peavy. Peavy has $63 million in guaranteed money remaining on his deal, which runs through 2012 and contains a club option for 2013. General manager Kevin Towers said that based on conversations with Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod, he is dealing with seven teams, but only a trio of National League squads is being given intense consideration. "Jake and Barry have told me there's really kind of three that they want us to focus on. Those are the three we've been focusing on," Towers said Tuesday at the GM meetings. "I haven't had a lot of dialogue with the other four. Those clubs are still, in his mind, iffy." Towers wants two major leaguers plus prospects in return. He doesn't expect a trade to happen quickly but anticipates dealing the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner. "When you start heading down this path, it's probably more likely to happen than not happen. I've got that feel," Towers said. Axelrod said the Padres approached him about a possible trade because of the team's financial situation and need to rebuild. Peavy has a no-trade clause, and Axelrod said he gave San Diego a list of five potential candidates the pitcher would approve a deal to. "He doesn't want to leave here. It's his home," Axelrod said. Peavy's initial list included Atlanta, the Chicago Cubs, Houston, the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis. Towers also has said that Peavy would accept a trade to two American League teams -- the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels. Towers wouldn't identify the three main teams he is dealing with. He intends to have discussions with one team this week. Talks with the other two "were down the road," he said. Peavy, a 27-year-old right-hander, was 10-11 with a 2.85 ERA in 27 starts last season as the Padres finished last in the NL West at 63-99, their worst record in 15 years. "He was frustrated with our season last year," Towers said. "I don't think 12 months ago he would have even thought that we'd even be at this point discussing this. I mean, we were coming off four winning seasons -- and almost three of the four playing in the postseason. Jake's all about winning, and he's a fierce competitor." Peavy made $6.5 million last season and is due $11 million next year, $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012. The contract includes a $22 million club option for 2013 with a $4 million buyout. "He's not too expensive to keep," said Towers, whose opening-day payroll this year was $74 million. "It's just that last year, we lost 99 games with him. So if we're able to add multiple pieces here that we think are going to improve our club, we've got to look at it." "We need to add quite a few pieces," Towers added. "I just don't think we can bring the same ballclub back that we had in 2008 and expect to be a lot better. I like the young players in our system. I saw a few of them in September, and I think they'll be better next year. But we need to make some trades and bring in some good players if we want to get better. I mean, 63 wins -- I'd like to think we're going to get better." San Diego also is considering trading shortstop Khalil Greene, who is owed $6.5 million next year. "If we end up moving Khalil, I see it in a separate deal," Towers said. "That's not to say it couldn't happen, but less likely
