  1. Jay finally looked human tonight, going 0-3, and dropping his season average to a dismal .444 ;D
  2. in the real world this may be true, but not in southeast texas. i don't think in four years of high school i ever had a class taught by a coach where i learned much (and i had SEVERAL). There is absolutely NO WAY that he gets reassigned due to his performance in the classroom UNLESS they are looking for a reason to reassign him. I assure you that if he was in the good graces of the top brass, his classroom performance would be irrelevant. i know nothing of this situation besides what's been on here, so i'm not defending either side. This is just a general observation. You could not be more wrong in your assessment of coaches. Some of my very best TEACHERS were coaches. I had many coaches that taught MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, etc... And for the most part, they did an excellent job. Was your English teacher a coach? You can state what your individual teachers were like but don't go saying "in general" that coaches are not good teachers because that is an outright LIE! This is not how I meant this post to be interpreted. In general, the coaches at my school were poor teachers. I was not trying to imply that all coaches are bad teachers, or even that a lot of coaches are poor teachers. I was just trying to show that there are coaches out there who are teaching simply because they have to, and they have no trouble finding and keeping jobs. To suggest that Coach Bryant's position was in danger because of his teaching ability is laughable. In a small town that is often fueled by politics, it is doubtful that a coach's teaching ability would play any role at all in his reassignment (especially if his 151-32 record over five years was inconsequential to his keeping his position). As for the thinly veiled insult about my English teacher, it would be offensive if it had any merit at all.
  3. thank you. good points. love you, mean it.
  4. dude, they're legit. 37-17. they certainly have a shot. 41st in the nation, and capable of beating anyone.
  5. Sunday is the opener for a very short red snapper season The good news is the recreational red snapper season opens Sunday. The bad news is that it closes August Aug. 5, with a two fish per person limit, and a 16-inch minimum, in Federal waters out past 9 nautical miles. That leaves us with a 66 day season in federal waters. State waters remain open for year round fishing. That's good news. But the bad news for anglers on the upper Texas coast is that it's nearly impossible to catch snapper in state waters, where the daily limit is four, with a 15-inch minimum. Believe it or not the National Marine Fisheries Service has determined that about a third of the recreational harvest is caught within state waters. In fact, the NMFS says that substantial quantities of red snapper are harvested by the recreational fishery from state waters. They report that landings from Texas state waters make up about 30 percent of the state's total recreational haul. How that was proven is anybodies guess. I've done quite a bit of snapper fishing on the lower Texas coast, mostly out of Port Mansfield, where you can catch snapper one to two miles off the beach. And I've never been checked. Better than that I never even see the feds check any boat for snapper anywhere on the entire Gulf coast in over 40 years of fishing. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission agreed Jan. 23 to remove from consideration proposals to match proposed federal regulations on red snapper in the state's territorial sea. The current rules for red snapper in state waters - a four-fish daily bag limit and 365-day season - remain in effect. The NMFS estimates there is a 75-percnet probability the 2.45 million pound recreational quota will not be exceeded during the 2008 fishing year if federal waters are closed on Aug. 5. The service believes the timing of the closure is necessary to, "adequately account for the anticipated but unquantifiable shifts in effort into state waters once the federal fishery closes." One thing to keep in mind is that you can keep up to 20 vermillion and lane snapper. The minimum size limit on vermillion snapper is 10 inches. For lane it's 8 inches. One very important rule when fishing in federal waters is that all anglers are required to use circle hooks. Plus venting tools to take the air out of a snapper's bladder. As of this year circle hooks are required when using dead or live natural baits for reef fish such as red snapper, vermillion, lane and grouper in both federal and state waters. If you have never fished with circle hooks you're in for a learning experience. What you don't want to do is set the hook. That goes against everything we have ever learned about fishing - as in cross their eyes on the hook set. Do that with a circle hook and it'll slide right out of the mouth of just about any fish. I've used circle hooks quite a bit. They are very effective once you learn how to use them. Commercial fishermen have used them for years. That should give you an idea of how well they hook fish. The proper procedure is to simply tighten up on the line. Just start reeling when you feel a tug on the end of the line, and nine times out of 10 the hook will lodge in the corner of the fishes mouth. Patrick Lemire, a veteran snapper fishermen, recommends using 8/0, 9/0 or 10/0 circle hooks. His favorite is a Mustad 39960-D. That's an inline circle hook. It's also non-stainless. That's another new regulation from the feds. The non-stainless hooks will, supposedly, rust away when broken off in a fish. Lemire says that using the venting tools is easy. "You want to insert it about two inches behind the pectoral fin of a snapper that's got a inflated swim bladder," says Lemire. "Push it in until you hear the air coming out. It's fairly simple. The dangerous thing is walking around a boat with the venting tool that's a sharp as a hypodermic needle." For a complete list of NMFS reef fishing regs go to www.gulfcouncil.org/Beta/GMFMCWeb/downloads/recbrochure2008web.pdf. If you're looking to head out on a party boat you might want to call William's Party Boats in Galveston. I've fished with them a few times. They run a pretty sharp and reliable operation. The number there is (409) 762-8808. Dorothy McCullin, the office manager for William's, says they're business is way off. "We've got a lot of fishermen this weekend but after that our bookings are way off," says McCullin. "I think it's because of gas." The one good thing about fishing on a party boat is that you can keep two red snapper, plus up to 20 vermillion and lane snapper. The captains of head boats are pretty good about finding vermillion and lane snapper. Also, you will have the opportunity to catch other species of fish like king mackerel, ling, triggers and sharks, etc. The cost for a day of fishing on a William's party boat is $70 on week days, and $80 on weekends and holidays. Make sure you know the rules before you go. Cost for any rules violations in federal waters varies, according to Kim Amendola, with the NMFS. She says the new regs will be enforced under the Joint Enforcement Agreement that they have with each state wildlife agency. For example, any Texas game warden or NOAA law enforcement special agent can enforce the new rules in federal waters. As for fines, they are case specific and enforced under the Magnuson-Stevens Act. Capt. Rod Ousley, with the Beaumont District of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department of Law Enforcement says state game wardens will be patrolling state waters out to 9 nautical miles. That's partly because of the shrimp season closure and the recreational red snapper opener. By the way, just because you might be fishing out past 9 nautical miles doesn't mean you can thumb your nose at Texas or Louisiana game wardens. They have all been commissioned by the NMFS to enforce both state and federal laws. Here's another suggestion. If you're thinking about catching a state limit of four red snapper in federal waters - don't. It's not worth the fine. Plus, don't think you can outsmart a warden sitting at the dock. You might be surprised at how slick they are at getting the truth out of outlaw anglers. And they're pretty darned good at finding hidden fish, too.
  6. i'd really like to see jozy up front. it seems like our forwards are generally ineffective these days. this is what i'm wondering... why not have dempsey and donovan in the central mid. we don't have anyone who can effectively replace them in the middle, but we have several players who could go up top and finish IF they had those two quality players in the middle feeding them. As it is, it seems like at least one of them is always up top, wasting away as the other is overrun in the midfield because he doesn't have another quality central midfielder next to him. I'm just spitballing here, so let me know what you think.
  7. The NBA announced to its teams this week at its annual pre-draft camp that fines will be imposed on players starting next season for clear cases of "flopping," ESPN.com has learned. The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters. The league's pledge to crack down on flopping was conveyed to team representatives at Tuesday's competition committee meeting in Orlando. NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson confirmed the new policy Wednesday night saying: "What was clearly expressed to the committee is that we would begin imposing fines next season for the most egregious type of flops. When players are taking a dive, for lack of a better term." Because a precise penalty system has not yet been structured, it is not yet known whether serial floppers will be subject to possible suspensions after a certain number of fines for flopping, as seen with the league's protocol on technical fouls. Players who accrue 16 technicals during the regular season are hit with a one-game suspension when they get to No. 16 -- the limit is seven technicals during the playoffs -- and receive one-game suspensions for every other technical thereafter (No. 18, 20, etc.). Detroit's Rasheed Wallace, a player who has 15 technicals this season and has been suspended in the past for being over the limit for technicals, gave his opinion of floppers to ESPN after the Pistons' 106-102 loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday. "All that bull[expletive]-ass calls they had out there. With Mike [Callahan] and Kenny [Mauer] -- you've all seen that [expletive]," Wallace said. "You saw them calls. The cats are flopping all over the floor and they're calling that [expletive]. That [expletive] ain't basketball out there. It's all [expletive] entertainment. You all should know that [expletive]. It's all [expletive] entertainment."

  9. that's pretty much it, bon. wolff wasn't good enough for the US team back when they were mediocre. i've never understood how he continues to get playing time.
  10. no landycakes... if he had been there, the score would've probably been... 2-0 england ;D
  11. tonight he was 1-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, and a run
  12. Joakim Noah had more than one run-in with the law at the University of Florida on Memorial Day weekend. On the same day the Bulls center was arrested for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and having an open container of alcohol, he also was issued two traffic citations. Noah, 23, was issued citations for driving with a suspended license and for not wearing a seat belt by the University of Florida Police Department on Sunday. Noah's speeding Hummer was stopped, which led to the officer learning of the suspended license. Florida coach Billy Donovan told the Gainesville Sun that he talked to Noah. "He's realized he made a mistake," Donovan told the newspaper. "I want to see what happens with everything that went on there. In my conversation with him, he feels bad. "The thing I've tried to talk to him about is there are so many young kids who look up to him, and he's such a giving kid and he's always given his time. He needs to turn this into a positive and being able to help young kids because he has a great opportunity to really help a lot of people. I told him to try to turn this into a positive because he's got enough of a personality that he can do that." On Wednesday, Noah's father said he didn't understand the fuss being made about his son's arrest. "I don't understand all that fuss for just drinking a beer on the street," Yannick Noah said Tuesday at the French Open. Joakim Noah could face up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for the marijuana charge. "I talk to him every day on the phone," said Yannick Noah, who was at Roland Garros on Tuesday for the dedication of a walkway named after him. "He'll soon come over to France to see me." Joakim Noah led Florida to consecutive NCAA titles before being picked ninth by the Bulls in the NBA draft last year.
  13. The US did not impress in this tourney, finishing 0-3.
  14. also, with all of the crazy dimensions that some of the parks have now, i think replay will help. look at minute maid. there are places where the ball can hit wall on one side of the line and be in play, 3 inches to the right and it's a homer.
  15. poor spurs... fight back only to lose at the end. nice rebound by horry... i've seen better hands on a clock.
  16. Final line: 3/3 (2 singles, 1 double) 2 runs 2 rbi 1 sb 2 bb how many players start out their careers getting on base in all five plate appearances of their first major league game? the future certainly looks bright for mr. bruce!
  17. RBI double to right one hell of a debut!
