Don’t tell me another year of underachieving. I just saw lots of BC city kids help win the southland conference, yet the BC baseball team struggles to get out of the area.

They actually did very well considering. The lack of High Octane stuff is the only thing missing. Everyone is used to Bridge City rolling out 1 90 mph arm after another.

Did the Woodville QB pick up offers from Baylor and Texas Tech, thought I saw that somewhere

Yes he has, and he has not played a down of varsity football. SMH   Coaches can’t say they have had anything to do with his success. He and his parents get all the credit.

Name one Texas high school sport that is bigger than football?!?!  I'll wait....  If it wasn't for football programs, how many other sports would survive?!?!?!?

Football is king I admit. If it wasn’t for the Tax payer these multimillion dollar stadium’s would not exist, these huge salaries would not exist. If everyone will vote for the school voucher program this would put a stop to a lot of the excessive spending, because when the 75% find greener pastures the 25% will be wondering what happened.

The battle over multi sport athletes has been fought forever.....This didn't  start 3 weeks ago. Football is one of the few sports that is not played year round. It simply cannot be, too physical and taxing. It requires an offseason of strength training, and conditioning to prepare for a10 to 15 game grind. Coach Rich is installing everything from scratch. A whole new Offense and Defense, from cadence to cleats. And football starts in August. Any AD worth his salt would push his agenda......And as for the social media assault, what's the reason for that? Ill wait........hmmmmmmmmm

Less than 25% of the kids in High School play Football, so according to your logic, we force the remaining 75% to do something that hinders their development, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Golf, Tennis, Swimming all of which have very different needs. Makes sense to me lol.

Strength, flexibility and range of motion SHOULD be mandatory in EVERY lifting program.

However, we all know that is not the case.

Pitchers should definitely be on a different regiment than other athletes. Arm care is serious business.

Too many football coaches fail other sports because they simply do not care.

There are ways to build strength and power and explosiveness that do not compromise the baseball players ability to throw or the basketball players ability to shoot. Unfortunately, too many football coaches are too lazy to find those alternative options.

Great post . This is from someone who understands.

Yes, But it should be tailored to the individual sport the kid is going to play at the next level.

My Bad again if the kid is not playing at the next level it does not matter, so by all means lift multiple times a day.

So we want kids to play multiple sports but do not want them lifting heavy weights in season? Only light lifting during the season? For multi sports athletes, that does not leave much time to get a true workout program going.

    What should happen is this...

Football Coach/AD runs athletics. During FOOTBALL OFF SEASON. athletes can go with their head coach of other sport on game days for that sport. If you want to build a true athletic program, the weight room is a huge part of that.

Yes, But it should be tailored to the individual sport the kid is going to play at the next level.

Hmm thats news to me and I have one currently playing college baseball.

Yet, there are hundreds of high school football players that play in the UA football game and the U.S. Army bowl

This applies to mainly pitchers, once you get to a certain pitch count or innings thrown they will shut you down. In the Juco level and below for the most part they don’t care.

Thought the discussion was playing high school sports, not next level. My comment was about  high school 2 sport stars which you said doesn't exist anymore. I disagree.

My Bad, you are correct there are many at the High School level.

  10. 7 minutes ago, AggiesAreWe said:

I can name several 2 sport stars just this past season. All with scholarship offers in both sports.

Now one may be a bigger star in one sport over the other but they still remain stars in both sports.

    2 sports stars still exist.

Yes they do but how many play both sports at the college level. Most coaches push 1 or the other because it takes away from both. I would say it is rare for athletes to play multiple sports past High School, not impossible. If you have a Heart problem you see a specialist not your local MD.

It's pretty self-evident that an injury can hurt a player's recruiting stock.

You and I agree completely, I was also told to never let a child play in any contact sport until Junior High. To many children are injured due to growth plate issues and it prevents them from playing at the high school level. He also suggested that kids specialize in the sport that suits their genetic makeup. There are no more 2 sports stars. The old saying if you are a jack of all trades then you are a master of none is true. If you don’t plan on playing after high school yes by all means play all sports. You are expendable and can be used.

    This.

That whole "your kid should go to school where you live" non-sense is for the birds.   Put your child in a position to win, in and out of the classroom.  The end.

Agreed, take away the tax dollars and Jasper’s problem and many more just like them are solved.

    That conversation shifted gears.

As far as parents moving their kids to schools that best suit their interests.. that's been happening since long before the talk of vouchers.  It can't be stopped.  I'm on the fence.  I see the arguments for and against.. but I think that maybe a parent's school tax dollars should go to the school of their choosing.  Schools should do better job implementing programs and others that A) keep kids there.. B)attract from outside.  Competition is good.. why shouldn't schools have to compete?

Yes an international shift to show the different avenues that can be taken to promote a good athletic and academic standards for all. Either that or monetary penalties be given if academic or athletic standards are not met.Years ago Every time a school lost a student it cost the school $9- 10 k per student. that is what the state paid for each student enrolled. Yes competition is good for all even schools.

At small schools it's difficult to justify paying what it takes to attract a quality football coach without attaching AD to the job.  Not only monetarily.. but NOBODY that's any good will go somewhere to be the head football coach while having other duties (classes, etc.).  Also, at a small school it's pretty much impossible to justify paying someone to be athletic director only as an administrative salary.

Double edged sword.  I am personally a fan of AD only positions.. but understand completely why it's not normally seen in smaller schools.  Schools the size of Jasper (4A) could probably get away with it.  But that deep, "the way it's always been done".. mentality has a stranglehold on a lot of places.

With that being said and I agree with everything you say. The only recourse some will have is to vote for the school voucher program. This will make it easier for parents to move their children to schools that best suit the interests of their children both academically and athletically.

Maybe.. however..  Many athletic director / head football coach have lost their job despite the athletic program as a whole being successful.. if the football team struggles.  On the other hand, when football teams are doing great but the rest of the program stinks.. AD/HFC still keeps their job.

WOS.  Newton. .. programs as a whole were fairly weak during those many years of football power and very few people even knew it.  Or cared. Yet, AD/HFC kept their jobs for years.

Meanwhile, I remember an AD/HFC at Barbers Hill lost his job after every program in the school won district championships and even had several team sports (baseball, softball, girls hoops, etc.) making runs at state.  But the football team was mediocre.  Fired.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that perception is reality.  And the perception is that your athletic program can suck as long as football wins.. it doesn't matter how strong the athletic program is if football sucks.

This is why I would never make the head football coach the athletic director at a small school. They have a 1 tract mind when it comes to the athletic program as a whole. Jasper is not the only school going through this . Keep in mind they have arguably the best athletes in the state and cannot win in the other sports. A true athlete is good no matter what sport he or she plays. If they have a true athletic program they will all be successful.

  16. Ha ha yall don’t want me to get off the board. No one from Kelly has recruited anyone for anything. I only know off their coach we received lessons from him, and the kids I speak of play Football, Softball and Baseball. Their parents have asked my opinion of what it takes to play at the next level and what they could do to help make it a reality,  I help everyone as best as I can to guide them in the right direction. Not everyone likes what I have to say and that’s fine . Every one is responsible for their own kids development, I have put in 25 years and thousands of hours it seems with my own and others as of now 8 kids have went on to the next level from 4 different schools.  But being a liar and idiot what do I know.
