  1. That's why Sam Houston is 8-0 and Lamar is 3-6.  Sam Houston's offense isn't much better than Lamar's but they have a very good defense.  They don't have a big team either, they're about the same size as Lamar.  UTA, which is also 8-0, is a real good defensive team.  Last year Lamar wasn't very good defensively, this year it's worse.  Is it the type of players Roc recruits or they way he coaches?

The players have to buy into the system of believing in themselves. It's a lot easier to work on physical skills than mental skills. I would bet that the team has no true leader who has stepped to the forefront and accpeted the challenge for the leadership role on the team. Right now, they know they can beat the small NAIA  schools, but a victory over Rice will gratly help their confidence.

  2. I have to laugh at this comment. Texas among many other schools have welcomed " bad attitude " players into their programs. Is it not possible for some of these student athletes that we have seen get in trouble with the law have bad attitudes from the start. I had heard how one player in particular, that just happens to be from P.A. that got busted at Texas, wasn't the greatest of people when Texas signed him. He had already had some run ins with the law but Texas took him anyway. Trust me, big named schools across the country lower their standards when it comes to landing a big time recruit.

Yeah, kind of reminds me of the two a&m football players arrested for home invasion recently. I guess it happens Texas a&m too!

  3. Yeah! Yeah! I am somewhat a little biased towards the Houston schools, I must admit. But I could tell the second half was going to be different when both teams walked out from their half-time briefings. Eisenhower came out looking very confident and ready to get the game going again.

Ozen players walked out with a distant looking glare in their eyes looking like they wish they were somewhere else other than the Montagne Center. D-Frank had the ball stolen from him after play begins, and he was out of the game (mentally)thereafter.

Ozen still had their chances. Missed free throws and missed short jumpers were their enemies. But Eisenhower countered back with everything Ozen threw at them. Ozen's press was broken and Eisenhower hit the easy layups to take the lead. Eisenhower's coach had a good game plan. Both teams were evenly matched up. This is hard for me to admit but deep down I was still rooting for Ozen to pull it out. Oh my God, I've been in deep S.E.Texas too long ;D

  4. it sure helps coaches on the high school level when the kids have a basket ball iq  that matches their grade level

Let me make it perfectly clear that in no way was I trying to blame the high school coach for H-F's poor basketball skills. I don't think the game is taken seriously enough out there. People show up to play but haven't put the time in to get better.

  5. OF is 6-2.  They lost to Tarkington the first game with minimal practice and they lost at Deweyville which is not an easy place to win.  Nederland just got 2nd behind Ozen in thier tournament.  They were actually winning through two and a half quarters.  They beat Livingston, West Orange (twice last week), and a team out of Houston.  Man they must be struggling since loley Orangefield beat them.

I am assuming that you are saying that Nederland "was winning through two and half quarters."  First of all, let me state that I attended the Nederland/Ozen game. I think this was my very first high school basketball game I have attended in this area. But I think it's somewhat misleading to say especially in basketball that a team was actually winning through two and half quarters. I've seen too many times where weaker teams were leading early in the games and it's just a matter of the stronger team focusing and executing their game plan.  Key word being focused. But don't get me wrong, Nederland has a good team and I wish them well. I had the chance to see their coach in action working with the younger kids and he's good.

  6. Those are great! Funny, I've been called crazy and I've done nowhere near that kind of stuff in public. Shows me be you can be along the very best at what you do and there will still be critics.

Coach Knight isn't one of my personal favorites but if you don't think he is a great basketball coach I'm not sure you know a lot about the game.

wOW! I just listened to his motivational speech on You Tube. I knew he was rough but he reminds me of my old coaches way back in the day. They would cuss you and pop you with boards. It d din't take me long to learn my assignments.

  7. hah yeahh HF will make it to state if every other 3a team loses every person on their varisty and half the teams lose their JV teams

Dang, you could have said if 2 or 3 teams lost players, but the "whole" varsity team?  Dang! I suspect it will be awhile ( 4-5 years) before H-F will make a serious run at district. It would help the cause if they found a coach like the young man at the elementary school.  He dedicates his time to  work out the girls at a very early age on the basic fundamentals of basketball.

  8. Very discouraging!!!  I watched the game when we blew out UNI last year and they were awful.  I absolutely CANNOT believe we lost to them.  We are obviously playing horrible basketball right now.  We could be approaching Tony Branch numbers this year.  I thought coach Roc was a good hire but it's looking like another bad move in a long line of bad moves.  I honestly don't know why we haven't gone after the SHSU coach, the NWSU coach, or even SFA's coach.  Those 3 guys put on a clinic every time we play them from a coaching standpoint.  I've finally quit going to the games.  I've been a huge fan for 30 years but it's just disgusting to go out there night after night and watch horrible basketball.

I thought we were picked #1 in preseason polls?  Apparently we have enough talent to win???  I don't know about our talent level this year since I haven't been to any games.  We obviously have no inside threat whatsoever.  And, if our offensive scheme is the same it has been the past few years (even under Tubbs) it can't be much of anything.  I don't think our players even no what a screen or backcut or give and go are.

Ah-hh Tony Branch days. Man, that brings back memories of long ago.  T.B. was too busy trying to graduate his players and less on talent. I'm in favor of bringing back Al Barbe (sp?) to coach. Where is he? Now, he knew how to win (just kidding).

L amar is good about giving their coaches 5 years to get things together. A lot of build up and no substance to back up the hype. I saw Lamar play twice last season, and I can honestly say that they had one kid who was a legit D-1 player. The rest would be role players on any other team.

But sometimes, you don't have to have a lot of talent to win. Teach a kid how to believe in himself and his own unique talents to blend in with the team concepts.

  9. What da-aaaa!!!!  Elmer Bennett from Bellaire!!! That was 1988? Oh yeah it was because I seem to remember the kid from this area (Sweet) was on the team too. Man that dude (Bennett) was so smooth and very legit and Norte Dame bound.  But Eddie Owens from Wheatley 1973 OR 74 (UNLV) was very legit, but maybe too young for yall to know.

Here's my top 20 HS players that I have ever seen play high school ball:

    1. Lebron James - St. Vincent St. Mary (Akron, OH) 2003

    3. TJ Ford - Willowridge (Sugarland, TX) 2001

    4. Stephen Jackson - Lincoln (Port Arthur, TX) 1995

19t. Dion Barnes - Madison (Houston, TX) 1991

19t. Tim Moore - Milby (Houston, TX) 1991

    20. Bobby Crawford - Eisenhower (Houston, TX) 1993

  10. 8. Hamshire-Fannett

I think in a SE Texas tourney that Ozen would likely win.  If the bracket was setup right I could see the following being the top 8 seeds!!!

    1...Ozen

    2...Memorial

    3...HJ

    4...Silsbee

    5...EC

    6...Central

    7...Kountze

    8...Vidor

Some will question my seeds, but I feel like in a tournament format that those would fit.  Vidor will surprise many teams!!!!  Besides who else could you possibly put in at #8?

  11. Okay, it's the 17th of Oct. So now it's one week away????  I've got the "jones" bad for some Bball. It's so bad I watched Georgetown's Midnight Madness festivities last week. But not one single ball did I see bounce on the floor.

The season starts in 2 weeks....im ready for it i no im not the only one..so what do yall think yalls teams out look on the season is...

  12. I have seen guys who have made great strides in improving their games over the summer. I cannot count the number of times I have seen players who may have played against each other in the past and the previous dominant player get his tail kicked for believing his opponent 's game hasn't changed. Basketball has a way of balancing out a player's game once his mental and physical skills began to mesh together.

They can't be that good.  If they played, then Liberty would have been better.  If they didn't play, then they went a whole year without playing.  How good could they be.  They couldn't top HJ lineup.
