Well,  I see how you were back in your days. ;D
Back in my days is no different than nowadays.  Am strictly a wannabe but am able to admit it. But Dove, maybe you can answer the question I am about to pose.  In the following comparisons, tell me if the better athlete/alleged superior talent is also the better basketball player 1.  Kevin Love vs JaVale McGee 2.  Dirk Nowitzky vs Lamar Odom 3.  Larry Bird vs Dominique Wilkins 4.  Sam Perkins vs Kevin McHale 5.  John Stockton vs Nate Archibald 6.  Tim Duncan vs James Worthy
Unless its Isaiah Thomas, I really don't care. He was smart, quick, athletic, a scorer, a passer, and those are the players I liked to watch.
My favorite Isiah Thomas pass was at the end of game 5 in the '87 conference championships. Great pass to Larry Bird, who fired it to DJ for the game winning basket. Classic Bird! Love watching that replay! [Hidden Content]
Yep, I can see why Dove hates him. Bird ranks up there with Jordan and Magic. Whether Magic and Jordan had more championships than Bird, you can't leave Bird out. I sure won't.......ever.
Actually, I hate Bird because I know thats Nash's boy!
Central have some very talented frosh and soph(s) pushing the upperclassmen right now. Its going to really be a dogfight over there for playing time.
 3. wOW! And all this time I was thinking HJ made it to Austin at least 3 times within the decade
 4. Gig'em Aggie. People getting carried away with their stories. ;)

I just thought it would have been more since 2000
So you disagreed with Isaiah. I couldn't stand Larry Bird. I hated his work ethic, I hated his shooting, I hated his socks, I hated the name of his town, I hated his team (after he was on the team), I hated the tone of his voice,............
 8. Many people think today if a kid hits 2- 3's out of 14 shots, can dunk a ball 1-2 times in a game, and jump high he has talent.
 9.
Badsanta, I agree with all of your statement, except that it isnt as pretty.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I like to watch basketball played in different ways, but to watch a team execute with precision is a more pure form to me.  I agree with nash and AAW that the term "talent" gets mistaken too often with only meaning running fast, jumping high, and being physically strong.  There is so much more to athleticism than those.  When you find a player like MJ that combines them, then it is a thing of beauty.
and Isaiah Thomas- a thing of beauty :D

 12. And athletic ability means nothing if you don't play smart as a team.

Ned JV played their best game of the season, IMO against Ozen.
Oh I know! The kid was in a zone. Could not miss a thing other than free throws.
 14.
If one believes that Mr. Boutte has knowledge/experience/coaching secrets that are largely responsible for his success and are not available to others, don't you wonder why those who have coached at Memorial during his AD tenure have not had greater results with him being in such close proximity?
Why do you say this? A very successful coach is there now...please explain.....
 15.
Championships are nice and help coaches get noticed very quickly, but they arent the biggest factor. Having talent makes everything easy. Bad Coaches can look great from better players, and Good Coaches can even look bad from not good players. Success for coaching basketball, IMO, comes from being at the right place at the right time. English is in a great spot right now. Talent in Nederland keeps growing, which is making his job alot easier.. Boute was in a great spot too, and knew it was time to move on after the talent pool got smaller in Beaumont.. Boute was a good coach who took advantage of the right situation to win..
"Boute was in a great spot too, and knew it was time to move on after the talent pool got smaller in Beaumont.. " Interesting, I was wondering if anyone was going to bring this up. Just a few years ago we were on here discussing the talent level in the area high schools and how it went down.
 16.
From article it looks like Ned. JV has two losses. LCM JV has three.  I was curious about Central JV and Ozen JV.
OZEN ONE LOSS to Nederland- JV . Ozen has beaten Central twice. Ozen beat LCM twice. I think Central beat Nederland, not sure who else Nederland lost to.
Would you agree that there are many coaches who meet your above criteria who havent even sniffed a state championship?
Yep, a lot of good coaches never make it to State. And at the same time, I know a few bad coaches who made it to State, just on their talent.
What irony. That Yates team of 1983 was LOADED!!!! Winslow, Holcombe among 5 players who signed DI that year for Yates. The Lions lost in the state semifinals to Fort Worth Paschal whose tallest player was '6"3 compared to the starting lineup of Yates' '6"8, '6"9, '6"6, '6"5, '6"2.
Instead of creating an imaginary scenario, let me ask you, how do the NFL coaching analysts rate Barry Switzer?  ;)
I will bet they dont rate him nearly as highly as the college coaching analysts do.  Same is true about Bud Wilkinson.  John Calipari and Rick Pitino (two excellent college coaches ) failed miserably in the NBA but I believe both will be remembered just as are Switzer and Wilkinson
So, to answer your question, the coach who goes to Yates will probably not get much credit, even though he would probably deserve more credit than he gets.  Winning a state championship takes a lot more than just putting the best talent on the floor.  There are still the intangibles and the luck factor that is needed....... although some teams may need a lot more luck than others.
Yeah, HJ comes to mind ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
 22. And the worse are those who coach and have no clue about how to use their players to their advantage. ::) Using little johnny cause parents paid dues to the booster club ;)
