Dove- I can't believe you waited that long to get in on this. I will, of course, be unable to confirm your contention. When the talent pool is down, there is only so much a guy can do. As I said earlier, Pat Knight is getting quite a bit more out of the Lamar team than his predecessor with essentially the same players but Lamar is hardly dominating the conference. I can assure you that the presence of Bill Belicek as head coach of the HJ football team would NOT, under any circumstance, propel them to district champs.
To be honest, I'm just not that familiar with Ozen basketball, and definitely not with Nederland. The only time I saw Ozen back then was on the UIL web site or maybe local tv when they played Bosh's club in Austin. I'm just generally Phillis Wheatley fan when it comes to high school basketball ;) -

So you are telling me if you took all the raw, uncoached talent in Beaumont and put it up against Nederland....Nederland would have the advantage? Speaking of diminishing accomplishments:
Not taking away from it, because its a good thing, but its been done, with less fanfare on Fannett Rd. in Beaumont....
And at the same time....this proves the point....it was done with less fan fare because it was expected......it was not expected at Nederland.
Well, when you become a fixture at the state tournament and become nationally ranked, district titles kind of loses its luster... ::)
:D :D -
Kids in Port Arthur used to play pick up ball AFTER PRACTICE in the parks at 503 and Gillum Circle....AFTER PRACTICE... :o :o..This was a recent as 1997...You just don't see that anymore! 8)
You right! There are some Ozen kids ;) who went to the park by Odom and played after open gym prior to the start of school season.

Back in my day :D we played at the city parks and if you lost you may not get next up for awhile. IF you didn't block out, hustle, or play defense, you would not get picked up and your teammates or any other team. But *you youngsters* know nothing about learning skill sets at the park playing 3v3 or 4v4, sad :'(
And this is because of Facebook, twitter, Playstation III and Xbox 360?
That too! Plus some parks just aren't safe to be in sometimes.
-
I agree 100%. Been saying this for awhile. Nobody respects S.E.Texas basketball nor the players like in the past.

Most bigs I see now won't jump for a rebound. All they want to do is reach up for rebound.
We were taught this in junior high.
And reviewed it and drilled on it in high school too!! I wasn't there, but am willing to bet my RIGHT ARM that you were!! ;)
Don't remind me. LOL!

Can you give me an example of what you see that the coach could not?
The whole court!
The coach can see the whole court also. You are simply saying that you can view it from a different perspective ( looking down instead of across) With all of the vast resources that the NBA has, why hasn't Phil Jackson or Doc Rivers or Eric Spoelstra posted somebody up high in the bleachers? The "ultimate" " man from above" is Mr. Jerry Jones and that, sir, has been a total DISASTER. ;D
Nash , thats my point. Nobody has done this but me. My idea is too radical I guess.
There was no question at all that with that amount of time left (and with the previous continueation 3 point shot that was waived off by officials) that Kristain was going to shoot that 3. Ozen should have just played good defense and lived with the outcome of a contested 3.
I think Ozen wanted to give Central a little false hope ;) ;D
I would like to think that I am more than qualified to answer the question at hand. Sometimes you just understand the terrain of certain battlegrounds, simply because you've just been there.
Not questioning your background or knowledge. Simply pointing out to the majority of us who are not coaches that the coaches are better equipped to make the decision than most of us are.
Nash, I beg to differ :-\ As I sit high in the bleachers I see everything going on what the coaches don't see. But they never ask nor agree with the decision I have made.
For kids who are producing? Hmmm....a kid's level of production may not directly reflect his ability as a player. May depend more on how much other talent and production is on the team with said player.
My bad, I shudda been more specific. I meant those so-called elite high school players such as the Top 100 on the ESPN -
Zack Dumas #39, Huffman didn't see it at first glance. Good for him and Huffman Hoops. Zack had 26 again last night in the big win against liberty 58-43. Good luck falcons.
Oh, so now you're happy? LOL! -
I guess you are right. They could have quit and got beat by 60, but they didn't. Not everyone is in the best situation and as gifted athletically and basketball wise. How does a kid respond in a tough situation says a lot about them. Don't belittle them for trying til the end even though they were losing.
Yep, its okay you lose to a better team but don't give up for that simple reason. OF, it comes in cycles, your day is coming to rule.
