  1. There was also an incident in the late 80s when my sister was in high school.  Vidor played at PNG and fans threw things at the Vidor band's bus.

Personally, I find the Indian's dancing mocking Native Americans more than anything else.  The term "Indian" in and of itself is offensive.

And I sincerely hope LCM did not pay a dime to clean anything for PNG.  I certainly wouldn't.

And as far as not allowing us to play our school song not being intentional.  I am sure it was.  The band director looked like he honestly couldn't believe the slight.

And this entire discussion has proven my point.

Honestly, I thought a team only had one rival. How did Vidor get so lucky to have so many. They must be the rich people over there since they can afford to have so many rivals in sports. We are just poor folks in mid county. We can only afford one Rival.

Lol, thats funny :)  I think the reason we have so many rivals is because Vidors rival used to be French, which became Central, so  naturally most put the rival tag on Central...Others who felt like we needed a rival latched on to Nederland likely because of a few spirited contests between the teams in the '80s...This is purely speculation tho and I haven't researched the scores between the two schools so don't blast me if I'm wrong. Also I've never heard of PNG being a rival until I read this thread.

I dislike PNG for two reasons.  When I was in HS, not sure what year it was, we were playing at The Reservation and they did not give our band the time to play our school song.  Secondly, another of my HS years, I believe it was LCM's mascot playfully tackled the Indian mascot.  PNG threw a huge fit over it.  Just seems they collectively have a huge stick up their @ss and cannot have any fun.  It is HIGH SCHOOL after all and these are kids.
  3. I am a graduate of Vidor HS.  I even played basketball.  I've paid school taxes in various cities.  The team wins, I am not a part of the team, therefore I did not win anything.

I am proud of the Pirates when they do well, but it isn't a big deal to me when they lose.  This is high school and I think there is more to be said for a team that learns how to lose than a team that always wins.  I can't really word that right to where it makes sense, but I know what I am saying.

My dad graduated from VHS in the 60s.  He has been to every game, home and away, since then.  My brothers played football, but he went before they played and after they graduated.  When they lost 52-0 to Baytown Lee, he was there....and so was I by default.  That's a fan.
  4. There a few things that bother me...

When a fan says, "We won."  You're not on the team, so you didn't win anything.

And in high school football, how good you are is a lot of luck.  No one determines how talented or athletic the people who go to their school are.  Coaches in high school teach work ethic and discipline, but you cannot teach quickness or agility.
  5. I don't think it is a rivalry - at least it wasn't when I was in school (graduated in 2000).  I do remember Homecoming one year that we played LC-M and someone very distastefully and stupidly hung a bear up by a noose in the hallway right by the principals' offices.  I am proud of where I went to school, but at the same time, there were a lot of morons there.

Anyway, I never saw it as a rivalry.  But, we weren't too far removed from 5A then, so maybe things have changed.
