  1. I really can't say that I am surprised by the ruling. It is quite common for these transfers to be rubber stamped by the UIL and only in rare cases is the eligibility denied.

The one thing that I heard that may justify the ruling was that I was told that there had been recent death threats against G.J. which may explain away why the move was only recently made even though hs dad was shot over a year ago. That may even have gotten him around the statements that his mom made. How? I don't know but as many of you have noted, we are talking about the UIL.

  2. Quote on PANEWS story today

“We re-evaluated the situation' date='” Thompson said. “We got with the UIL, got with the umpires association, got with the superintendent, got with the principal, the chief of police and sat down and put our heads together to see what we could do.

“We're going to reprocess this thing back to the original schedule, but there will be security at every game. There will be enough security, or more than enough security, at every game.”

Explain to me what would posess teenagers carrying weapons at 7pm, pull into a parking lot, with 200 witnesses under a lighted ballpark to commence a ok corall shoot out ?[/quote']

Well, admin, you are talking about young men who evidently not made the wisest of life choices to date, so why should this be different?

I for one am glad to see that the games are returning to PA. I thought by moving/forfeiting these games, the PAISD was empowering these idiots and others that look to follow their lead. I know that safety was a concern, but I think that is taken care of.

  3. Well, as now a 16 year resident of Houston, I can tell you that as a community, there is not the fervor for football that there is in SE Texas. Lee has been without a football program for several years now. If you go by the school you can see that it really doesn't have the space to support most sports, much less football.

Quite frankly, I am surprised that a few more schools around HISD have not closed down their football programs.

  4. There is no way of telling how this will come out. 8 strong teams. 6 who went to the playoffs including a Regional champ, a regional finalist and a couple of teams who advanced to the third round. And the two teams that didn't make the playoffs could this year if they were in any other district.

  5. how can 21-3a be so good and 22-3a be so weak....

those are gonna make for some UGLY playoffs games in all sports

I am here to tell ya, bi-district is looking pretty scary is you are over in 22-3A. Of course, they point to what Huffman did to WO-S a couple of years ago. The problem, this is no Huffman in that bunch.

This mega district also has created some difference in who goes in what Division. Over the past couple of years, WO-S knew it was going DI if it made the playoffs.

But since Silsbee (829) and Jasper (816), both have larger ADM's than WO-S (806) it is almost a guarantee that WO-S will be a DII rep if it makes the playoffs.

  6. From KFDM.com:

An agenda for the February 2 Port Arthur school board meeting indicates Superintendent Dr. Willis Mackey might be preparing to resign.

As KFDM News reported Monday at 6 p.m., the agenda states the board will consider accepting the resignation from Dr. Willis R. Mackey and approving a voluntary exit agreement between Mackey and the district.

The agenda also states the board will consider appointing a temporary superintendent.

We could not reach Dr. Mackey for comment.

Doctor Mackey and members of the board have had several disagreements in the past year, and a state conservator was sent to the district to help work out problems involving the board and the superintendent.

Dr. Mackey has been the PAISD superintendent since June, 2003. During previous interviews with KFDM News, Dr. Mackey has cited some of the accomplishments under his tenure, including voter approval of a $110 million bond issue and increasing test scores.

Stay with KFDM News for much more on the story.

  7. Ya know. The "well, they benefited from Katrina" bit gets kind of old. It smacks of the operator of a Vidor message board who had the nerve to ban me simply because I dared to say that WO-S' football team could have beaten Vidor's last year......WHAT A STRETCH!!!

piratefan, Central can brag and boast because they have been there before. In trying to make you case that this year's team only made the playoffs because they were "Katrina aided" you make it sound like last year was the first time that Central had tasted playoff success.....WRONG!!! The truth is that with the exception of the 2004 1-9 Central team, the Jaguars have made the playoffs every year since they started in 4A in 2002....including a trek to the Regional Finals in 2003.

Anyway, why are you getting on a Jag fan for doing the same thing that many Vidor fans were doing last year? At least they have some track record to go on!

And before you drag out the Hurricane excuse....remember this, EVERY team in this area was affected by Hurricane Rita!!!! The only quality team on your pre-district schedule was BH and they rolled y'all!!!!

To Crow's Nest and other Vidor posters, my apologies and I hope that I did not offend too much.

  8. 75, could you do me a favor? When you say that Tarver has shown apathy toward the other sports, could you explain that?

I only ask for this reason....it is not like BC has been starved for athletic success aside from football. Look at this year as an example. A state championship in boys' cross country, a boys' basketball team that is competing for a playoff spot, baseball and softball teams that will be competing for state championships. So the football program isn't the only successful athletic program at BC.

Now as to the fact that he is not a very personable guy, I agree that it is not a good trait to have when you are trying to save your job. However, is that a good reason for getting rid of someone?

This is certainly an outsider view, but it appears that BC is taking a step back if they get rid of Tarver.

  9. With Memorial, is that something that the state is going to have to have a say in? That school baord may be dissolved before a hiring is made. If it is the current board, I see them hiring from within and keeping someone like Senegal in place. But if that changes, I see them going outside of the district and probably someone younger who is just trying to fill a slot on the resume.

I can't believe that the run that BC made this year could not put to rest the problems that the folks in BC had with Claude Tarver. If he is removed, I hear that native son, Jeff Mathews, currently at Vidor, will move over to fill that job. I think this would be a HUGE mistake as Mathews's teams at Vidor have consistently underachieved. And I am not sure if BC wants to have the likes of Gulf Shores on their schedule.
