Thank you for exactly stating what you just stated.......There is not ONE coach in this entire area that has seperated himself or herself from the pack....Why do you think that is???  This area is and always revolved around sports...There are many and I repeat many very knowledgeable people in this area to have over 35-40 Excellent coaches...I can personally name them.  Is there a reason they don't get involved???  It just seems to me that quality of coaches has gown downhill due to the fact that the ones coaching now aren't there for the right reasons...Either they did not play sports and are living their lives through their kids or they might just really and truly be volunteers that care enough and try to help but they are not teaching our kids the simple proper fundamentals...Is that justifying!!!  If I volunteer to help with handicapped children lets say that need speech therapy and I dont know anything about it SHOULD I CONTINUE TO DO IT JUST BECAUSE I HAVE SOME EXTRA TIME ON MY HANDS AND CARE ABOUT THE KIDS?? NO, in my eyes, i would be unintentionally hurting the cause!!!  I guess my point is that if you want to volunteer to do something at least know a little something about it...I have watched to many young children get taught the wrong fundamentals way too many times....Last night, at a select team ballgame, the coach yelled from the dugout all night to everyone of his batters "ELBOW UP"!!!  I guess some of you coaches still think thats the proper way to hit a ball!!!!

I was speaking of the 10U age group and I might add most have not had time to seperate themselves yet. As far as overall, I would think you would have to admit Robert Armentrout John Harrell and Robert Verde have all seperated themselves at one point or another. They each have had a hand in an AFA National Championship. John Harrell brought his 12U to tied for 9th in the ASA A Nationals, Robert Armentrout briught his 18U to Gold Nationals and Robert Verde brought his 18U to Gold Nationals multiple times, beating your vaunted Houston Teams all along the way. Bet ya didn't know that. Anyway you seem to know it all so good luck with that. Coached two years in 6U and two in 8U and got it all figured out.  ::)
2. The point there are lots of coaches, many of them good. But none that have seperated themselves from the pack to be considered the best in the area. That's a big difference. It doesn't mean that none are good, it means that one org is not perceptively better than another in the eyes of these kids andparent.

I would also tell you, as a parent ease back a notch, because it is along haul. Many a kid has became burned out before their time. Its a tough call, but you need to make it fun while still striving for excellence.
3. LULU, I see no problem discussing this but things were getting too personal. You basically said there were no "good" coaches in the area, so of course people are going to be offended. Have you seen everyone and why do you believe that? What are the specific problems as you see it. You talk about kids and coaches that are not A-Ball material, but won't time take care of that. Each year the numbers will pare down as players discover that this sport is not for them and the concentration of good players will become stronger and stronger. There have been some very good coaches in the past in this area at 10U and suspect there are some now and will be again. The key would be for a coach or organization to be so attractive that most of the good players would flock to them. That team could then be selective as to the players that they accept. Another problem is that at this age a lot of players (or their parents) are not interested in a lot of travel. Lastly there is no wrong approach only wrong matches. Some kids want to play a higher level but only for fun, while others have decided that softball is their love and want to play only at the highest level and may have decided that college is an option. At what age this happens, is probably variable, but it will happen. The bottom line is I have seen a lot of very good coaches and it is unfair to lump them all together because they are all different. I personally am very fond of a new 10U coach and I can tell you, she knows more about the game than most. That's jsut the way I see it.
4. This is pretty interesting stuff, but we need to tone it down a little.

As far as the coaches my daughter has had. I was one, her mother coached her and a list of dads, who had kids on the team. In fact every coach my daughter has had, had a daughter on the team. Most of whom went on to play at a high level D1 school. Most of the other girls on the team were also coached by their dads at one time or another and most of them went on to play D1 as well. Just because you are a dad doesn't prevent you from being a heckuva a coach. I suggest you go to as many tryouts as you can and if you don't find anything that suits you, start a team yourself.

SUPERSOFTBALLMOMMA, were you a parent who was involved in any of this? If so, speak for yourself.  My daughter was one that was "invited" to play with the team that went to Lufkin.  And the person that invited her is a parent whose daughter is on the Blast.  The way *I* remember it, we did not have all the details of the how and why prior to the first meeting.  We were invited to play and we agreed.  However, after the first meeting/practice, enough information was given to understand enough about why it was put together.  If people didn't like it after the first meeting/practice, why did they show up for the second practice and play in the tournament?  How that fits into DADS from the new GT Shocker team being deceitful, I have no idea.   Troy and I never once felt like we were being deceived.  The initial invitation has led us to where we are right now and for that I am thankful regardless of the hows and whys it all came about.

Craig's point was that there are no dads coaching the new GTS team.  The girls were not given spots based on the fact that one of their dads was going to help coach.  Simple as that.

Are you saying that the girls on the GTS team did not make the team based on their skills?  Were you at the tryouts and did you see the girls that tried out?  If not, then how would you know who should have received spots?

I second what Dottie said....I believe that the decision to join the GTS team is one of the best decisions we have made for our daughter with regard to softball.  They did bust their butts at tryouts (both of them) and continue to bust their butts at practices and have earned their spots on the team.  If you don't believe me, come check out one of our practices.  These girls have been practicing extremely hard and are still coming back for more.  They know all their hard work will only make them better.  So don't knock it until you try it.

Why people (especially anonymous people) feel the need to create conspiracy when there is none, I will never understand.  Get over it and move on.  We sure have and are extremely happy with our decision.  We are looking forward to the upcoming season and are not looking back.

Wait a minute...I never said anything negative about ANY girl on that team. I have nothing negative to say about those girls, but for Craig Soignet to come on here and say that no spots were taken is completely FALSE, because they were. There was a reason you didn't know details prior to the first meeting, it was because a dad was orchestrating it that way. He kept it very quiet what his true intent was, because he knew that was the only way he would get parents to agree. I'll be happy to let the so called "controversy" go away, but I will not sit quietly while people spew half-truths.

I am very glad you are happy.
But you did when you said that those girls only made it because there Daddies were going to coach. Don't you see.
6. Less drama? Have you had kids come through HS yet? A ton more drama in HS than any select team I have ever been involved with. Select is always painted as this cut-throat thing and my kid played for three different travel teams and everyone of them was first notch.  No problems............well except the changeups?!    ;D
7. As alluded to the "Gold" term is highly over-used, probably to attract more players. To me when you use Gold it should be to indicate your intentions to play at the highest level available, including the territory and regional Gold Qualifiers that you qualify for.

http://gold.asasoftball.com/qualification/gold_procedures.aspx

18-Under JO GOLD Qualifying Procedures
Effective with the 2002 playing season, teams qualified for the Gold Nationals through Regional and Territory qualifying tournaments (see maps below). The 2010 Gold Nationals will be held August 1-7 in Marietta, Georgia.

1. Regional Tournaments: Every ASA Region gets one (1) direct berth to the JO Gold Nationals. Some regions will receive extra berths based on previous year's Gold participation. Your local ASA Commissioner and ASA Junior Olympic Commissioner have information on the number of berths each region will receive. Regional qualifiers are open only to ASA registered Gold teams from that region.

2. Territory Tournaments: Per the ASA Code Article 516, "The ASA shall conduct two (2) Territory Tournaments in Junior Olympic Girls 18-Under Gold Fast Pitch in each of the following territories:
Territory 1 (Inclusive of Regions: 1, 2, 3, and 9)Eastern
Territory 2 ( Inclusive of Regions: 4, 5, 6, and 7)Southern
Territory 3 ( Inclusive of Regions: 8, 10, 11 and 12)Northern
Territory 4 ( Inclusive of Regions: 13, 14, and 15)Western

The number of berths per territory is based on previous year's Gold team participation. Each territory will hold two (2) Territory Tournaments and distribute their allotment of berths at these two tournaments. Your local ASA Commissioner and ASA Junior Olympic Commissioner have information on how many berths each territory receives. Territory Tournaments are open to all ASA registered Girl's 18 & Under Gold Fast Pitch teams within their respective territories. However, if any Territory Tournament should have fewer than 24 teams entered by April 14th, then teams from any territory may enter that particular Territory Tournament. The ASA National Office will work closely with the territory to monitor the number of entries in each Territory Tournament. Teams that have previously qualified for the Gold National Championship Finals are not eligible to compete in Territory Tournaments.

Contact your local ASA Commissioner or ASA Junior Olympic Commissioner for information about ASA regional qualifiers.

An important note for all JO teams: Per the ASA Code, Article 501 A. 3. Rostered Player: "A player may participate in more than one Junior Olympic division of play, but that player is limited to only one classification within a division of play." JO teams should therefore be advised that if they participate in championship play at a classification higher than their assigned classification, they must participate at that higher classification for the remainder of the season. For example, if a Girls Fast Pitch Class "A" team participates in a Gold Territory Tournament, that team may not move back down to play in Class "A" championship play. For the remainder of the season that team will be classified as a Gold team, and may only play in Gold championship play.

Now (13) I will have to say that I personally think that The College Street Complex is very nice! The city of Beaumont has been doing alot of work out there to improve it.Alot of damage was done the last 2 Hurricanes.I think that it is coming along nicely! There still is some work that needs to be done.I never heard any complaints about the fields when we were playing this weekend.I will say that I do not know anything about fields though. But,I can say this we live in Beaumont, and my daughter plays on Hit Away Gold.We go to Houston weekly for practice at Collins Park Fields, and I do not see anything any different over there.Just my opinion.
Are they still punishing Hit Away and putting them on field #5?   Now that they qualified they need to make them part of the SK mafia with the Hawks, Impact and Eclipse.  Let them get on the the bigtime fields 1 through 4.

MOMMA,  I remember your girl from when she won newcomer of the year in district, I always expected great things from her and wish her the best.  Good luck in Marietta, those people know how to throw a tourney.  Glad they got it away from the concrete jungle of OKC.

Give yourself plenty of traveling time. It kind of stacks up when going through the battleground. Only one lane each direction. Good Luck and have fun!!!
