  1. I copied and pasted the picks from All District Picks up top. Congrats to all who made it. But,  I must say I think that Harkness the ball handler for LCM should have been first team. She was the only player on the team the coach almost never took out of the game. She is the one the other teams double teamed. She is the one who had great preception of where everyone else was on the floor and made some great passes thus assisting her teammates so they could score. She put 110% effort in to all 4 quarters of the game. You never had to wonder how much effort you were going to get from her. I have no kids in LCM, so NO I am not a disgruntled parent. Just someone who loves to watch area basketball games. I just think a great athlete, should be given the recognition she/he deserves.

  16. Williams powers Jaguars advertising BY MIKE FORMAN - [email protected] March 19, 2009 - 11:21 p.m. University of Houston-Victoria baseball coach Terry Puhl had heard about Zane Williams' power and now he's seen it first hand. Williams hit his ninth home run of the season, a towering grand slam, to highlight an eight-run seventh inning in the Jaguars' 12-2 win over Fisher College in a game stopped in the seventh because of the 10-run mercy rule on Thursday night at Riverside Stadium. UHV improved to 17-10 and will return to Riverside Stadium on Friday at noon to play another single game against the team from Boston. The Falcons dropped to 4-9. "That does not surprise me, I've seen him hit balls," Puhl said of Williams, who transferred to UHV from Southern Arkansas. "The ball he hit in Dallas (actually Fort Worth), I've never seen one ball hit so far in my life. This one right here was a pretty good poke too. That's a deep part of left-center, almost center field." Williams hit his eighth double of the season in his first at-bat and drove a 2-1 pitch just to the left of the center-field fence. "I was just thinking about my last at-bat," said Williams, who had flown out to left field. "Coach Puhl told me to have a good at-bat and to stop chasing curveballs so I knew just to sit back, get my foot down and trust my swing. I got a pitch to hit and I hit it well." All eight Jaguars who came to the plate in the seventh inning reached base against starter Jarlin Gomez and two relievers. "They just started getting better pitches to swing at," Puhl said. "The first pitcher got into a pretty good rhythm around the fourth and fifth inning with his breaking ball and we went fishing on some pitches that I wasn't too happy about. Our team, they can hit, but they have to swing at pitches that are quality pitches to swing at." UHV had six of its 10 hits in the inning, including a two-run triple by Josh Darnell, who hit a solo home run in the third inning, and Tony Rothman's team-leading 10th home run, a solo blast over the right-field fence to end the game. "We've been seeing better pitching and we're starting to get used to it," Williams said. "This guy had some good stuff and we finally started getting used to him and stringing together some hits. We chased him and got to the bullpen and they weren't doing too good so we jumped on them too." UHV pitcher Casey Newman (1-1) got into the win column by working six innings. Newman did not allow an earned run while striking out six, walking three and hitting a batter. "He pitched through a lot of pitches tonight, he was up to 115 pitches," Puhl said. "He did a good job. (Pitching coach) Doug (Heinold) has been working with him about not rushing as much. Once he gets that part, when it sinks in for him, he's going to be a much better pitcher because of it." No outs when game ended Jarlin Olivera, Austin Brodie (6), Mark Dorso (6) and Edwin Pena. Casey Newman, Colter Zoch (6) and Josh Darnell. W: Newman (1-1). L: Olivera. Highlights: (FC) Mike Olivera 2-for-4. (UHV) Zane Williams 2-for-4, grand slam, 2B, 2 runs, 5 RBI; Josh Darnell 2-for-3 solo HR, 3B, 2 runs, 3 RBI; James Green 1-for-3, 3B, 2 runs, RBI; David Baker 1-for-1, run, RBI, SB; Tony Rothman solo HR; Jon McDonald 1-for-3, 2 runs, RBI. Records: Fisher College 4-9; UHV 17-10.

  18. I am so proud of Deweyville Students, Athletes, Coaches, Teachers, Faculty and Staff as well as our community. Destin was an awesome young man. He touched many lives. This was quite evident in the out pouring of love, prayers and people that have supported his natural family and his Pirate family. It was so kind and thoughtful for the many schools to send such beautiful flowers, and to keep his family as well as our community in their prayers. It really puts many things into perspective. His presence is definitely missed. His natural family and his Pirate family have a long road ahead of them, but they will all make it. Destin expects us too. A family shared the following sentiment in a card to the Lairsey family, I think it says it all: "In these troubled times God needed to add a 110% spark to Heaven's line up. Destin is who God chose. Now, Destin is on the Best team ever built." Destin's Pirate team will continue to miss him, but they will pull together and come out all right. We are all better people because we had the opportunity to know Destin.
  19. Prayers to Destin's family, friends and school facualty. He had the biggest heart and the greatest smile!!!!!! He was a friend to all. He is already so greatly missed. Please continue to pray for his family, friends and our entire school system and community. We feel such a gap in our hearts and our lives. But we will carry Destin with us in our hearts wherever we go and whatever we do. He will never be forgotten.
  20. Does anyone know how Deweyville came out in their first game in the Hemphill tourney? They played today at noon. They will play again at 5
  21. Deweyville's Zane Williams Jaguars complete sweep against LSU-Alexandria Green bats during in the second game against LSU - Alexandria Saturday afternoon at Riverside Stadium. NADA ELSAYED/VICTORIA ADVOCATE BY MIKE FORMAN - [email protected] February 21, 2009 - 11:00 p.m. The wind gusting through Riverside Stadium was no match for the power generated by Zane Williams' swing.Williams hit a pair of three-run home runs to help the University of Houston-Victoria win both games of a doubleheader Saturday and complete a sweep of a three-game series against LSU-Alexandria. The Jaguars won the first game 13-4 and claimed an 8-2 win in the second game to boost their record to 8-6. UHV overcame a strong north wind by getting 13 hits in the first game and 11 in the second. Williams supplied the power with his fourth and fifth home runs of the season. "Zane hits a big ball," UHV coach Terry Puhl said. "He hit a couple today the wind did not help. It's literally into the face of the hitter. He has some big power, he really does. We'll see a little bit more benefit as we get a little bit more south wind and it's launch time around here." Williams propelled both home runs over the right-field fence, the first blast coming in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game and following with a shot in the third inning of the series finale. "I finally got pitches I could hit and I finally got to attack them," Williams said. "I got something in the zone and I got a good piece of them." The Jaguars trailed 4-3 in the opening game before scoring three runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth to turn the contest into a rout. Williams' home run broke a 1-1 tie in the second game and UHV added four runs in the fifth. "This series I was pretty pleased," Puhl said. "We were swinging at better strikes. We didn't get way out of the strike zone like we did earlier in the season, so they're getting a little bit better idea of the strike zone." Puhl was also pleased with the pitching of starters Ray Maldonado and Bobby Gomez. Maldonado pitched a complete game, yielding six hits and three earned runs while striking out eight. Gomez gave up seven hits and one earned run before being relieved by Chris Neiser with two outs in the sixth inning. "That's all by design," Puhl said. "We've been trying to keep on pushing these guys and we took a couple of early losses because we just could not afford to take them out because you project those guys to be starters." The Jaguars had 32 hits against the Generals (5-8) and hope to carry the offensive momentum into Tuesday's game at Texas A&M-Kingsville. "We've been listening to coach Puhl and getting the balls in our zones," said Williams, who went 6-for-12 against LSU-Alexandria. "We were waiting for strikes and attacking strikes and that's what we did and it worked out for us." UHV 13-8, LSU-Alexandria 4-2 LSU-Alexandria 020 200 0 -- 4 6 2 UHV 300 037 x -- 13 13 1 John Bult, Kenny Wilmore (6), Marty White (6) and Adam Tucker. Ray Maldonado and Tank Peterson. W: Maldonado (4-0). L: Bult (2-2). Highlights: (A) James Howell 2-for-3, 2 runs; Tid Hilger 2-for-3, 2 runs; Stephen Laurent 1-for-3, 2 RBI. (UHV) Zane Williams 2-for-4, 3-run HR, 2B, 3 RBI; Michael Prestera 3-for-5, run; Tony Rothman 2-for-4 2B, 2 runs, 2 RBI, SB; Jon McDonald 1-for-2, 2 runs; James Green 1-for-3, 3 runs, SB.
  22. Congrats to the Pirates. Keep up the TEAM work guys! You played well on both ends of the court.
