  1. Was surprised by the closeness of the game due to Vidor only having 2 returning starters on each side of the ball and the quality of the opponent.  The next 2 non-district games, BC and K'ville, should show if the Pirates are indeed a team that should have previous expectations elevated.

Amazing...4 weeks ago we were destined to be the "cellar dwellers" of the district and now there's talk of us making the playoffs (which I believe we will) I love it!!! 8)

Actually, Vidor and Ozen were picked as cellar dwellers.
  3. It will be interesting to see how the Eagles fare when Barbay goes into retirement.  Will they continue the high standards Newton football achieved under Barbay or will there be a noticeable dropoff?  How much of the success can be attributed to talent and how much to coaching is a question that can come up when the head coach of a respected program like Newton's retires or is replaced.
  4. Overtime games do not come out well for the Pirates.  2 OT loss to Ozen in 2000 for the district championship, then the classic OT shootout with Central last year and now the 2 OT loss to Texas High.  A conversion jinx seems to be in place with failed 2 point conversion tries in the first two, then a missed PAT late in regulation vs. T.H. that caused this game to go into OT.
  5. I agree that a diversified offense is harder to defend than a one dimensional attack.  In Vidor's case, they probably wouldn't have to throw more than 20% of their plays to loosen up the defense.  Most teams play against the slot T with 8, (or more), defenders in the box.  The threat of a receiver getting behind that run-stop defense becomes very real with a credible passing game.
