Can't remember his name ,but one of the Houston Oilers kids  is playing  for Fort Bend and is a D-1 prospect !

Bruce Matthews' son and he plays center so he'll be head-to-head with Darrian Wright. Should be a battle and good test for both.

The Elks are large, just like most 5A teams and they have a lot of depth. A lot will depend on conditioning which I know is good with Dayton, but have no idea about the Elks. The Elks will have few, if any two-way players. Of course our improved depth will help a lot and if we can work our guys in and out on a consistent basis, fatigue should not be an element of the game. IMO
2. As PA announcer, I watched both games from the pressbox. If not for some "preventable" turnovers (in other words not caused by big hits but just mishandling of the football) It would have been 44 to 3.

The problem with trying to figure out how WOS and NED will do against each other is made more difficult by the fact that this scrimmage featured mostly starters. Against WOS Dayton played many more players, including another QB for more than a quarter.

Right now I would rate it a tossup. Nederland might have a home field advantage and win in a close one, but again, it's hard to say.
3. The incomplete passes were mostly drops. Of course the two top receivers Gamal Fowler and Armando Reyes were held out of the game. They were in jerseys and shorts on the sidelines.

Way too many fumbles, too. Seems like I remember four or six if you count recoveries.

Tooks some time for Dayton's offense to get untracked but when it did it chewed off some big yardage.

Nederland threatened a couple of times but the Dayton defenders would have none of it. Yes, Darrian Wright and Aaron Ripkowski are for real, but Jr Phillip Burks, Soph Charles Tousant are for real, too.

4. Just took a look at the preview and then at the schedule you have posted and both have the opener, Ft. Bend Elkins as being in Dayton.

Originally, that was the case, but it gave the Broncos 6 home games and 4 on the road, meaning in 2011 we'd have 4 home games and traveling for 6. Elkins finally got back in touch with the Dayton staff and now the game is being played on their field - the one off Hwy 6.

FYI
5.
2. One (NOT CROSBY) that equals or almost equals another (DAYTON) in a particular respect
This is the crux of those who think this is not a rivalry. Yes, in some cases teams equal in talent where one wins approximately as many games as the other is a rivalry. But "in a particular respect" does not meet "only that" as a criteria. In the case of Dayton and Crosby there are several "particular respects" - the long, long history of playing each other, the fact they are only 17 miles apart, the fact that both have almost always been the same class size, the fact that . . . do I need to go on?

Liberty has dominated Dayton as far as wins and losses goes, but try and tell me that would not be a huge rivalry if they started playing again. Won-loss records have little if anything to do with teams being rivals simply because the underdog (in this case Crosby) is always going to relish when they win and the Dayton players are always going to say they don't want to be the team that lost to the Cougars. Get it? That means due to everything BUT the win/loss comparison, the teams rival each other.  Capiche?
6. 1. One who attempts to equal or surpass another, or who pursues the same object as another; a competitor.
2. One that equals or almost equals another in a particular respect.

I picked these two definitions off the web at random, but I think it best explains the mindsets or confusion (i.e. Dayton Crosby thread) of what a rivalry is.

By definition, Crosby and Dayton are DEFINITELY rivals. Why? They've been playing each other off and on, mostly on for more than three quarters of a century. Whenever the two get together it's a brawl. The teams don't like each other, the fans enjoy the aspect of rubbing it in each other's face and no matter who's favored or even comes in with what is perceived as the better team, no one can determine with 100% accuracy who will win, i.e. 2009.

That being said, domination by a team over another team does not in itself preclude or otherwise exempt them from being rivals. Number two in the definition could be construed that way, but "in a particular respect" is the key phrase that should eliminate any misunderstanding. The fact that both teams are in the same district, or in some cases a bi-district playoff game, and the fact that they are close to each other in proximity plus the fact they have the history they have are plenty of "particulars" to satisfy the definition.

Want an example? I was at this year's Dayton vs Crosby game (duh). A team and its fans DO NOT celebrate a win over a neighboring community the way Crosby celebrated that win without the game being an INTENSE rivalry. Now that they are playing each other again, I expect Barbers Hill and Dayton, if not already, are rivals. Anyone knows IF and that's a great big large IF, Liberty ever gets their program to the point where they will ever consider playing Dayton again that this will be a rivalry from the very "re-beginning" of play.

I would have posted this on the original thread, but didn't want it to be lost in the mix.

Oh, and there is another kid named Howard from Dayton playing college football.
7. Thank you. I think the best part, the most telling part is that about the injuries to Hill and Ploch.

Fans in the stands and out make outrageous comments about why didn't that guy play or "he should have played that quarterback" and had no clue that an injury was calling the shots and not any coach.

Turns out that Hill does have an injury and the blow to Ploch's shoulder almost had him in tears and ANYONE who knows of that young man's toughness has to know it would have dibilitated anybody else. Me thinks we don't need to jump to conclusions until and unless we have all the facts.
8. Landon Appling: Carries -173  Yards 1341  Avg. per carry - 7.75  TD's - 18
Devin Parks: Carries - 103  Yards 753  Yards per carry - 7.31  TD's - 8
D'vonte Wells: Carries 100  Yards 589  Yards per carry - 5.89  TD's - 10

The above are the three main rushing weapons for El Campo.

Waylon Malone is the quarterback - 56 completions on 89 attempted passes for 627 yards (62.92%) with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Not sure if these are just regular season stats or if the playoff numbers have been added in.
9. Dayton, per usual, is the visitor. . .

As far as El Campo is concerned, not being able to throw and having to throw are two different animals.

Against their last two playoff opponents, the Ricebirds have thrown effectively to supplement a voracious ground attack.

Against Santa Fe - 37 attempts for 337 yards rushing - 3 of 5 passing for 27 yards

Against Yates - 337 yards on 55 carries. 6 of 7 passing for 87 yards.

The thing about a team that runs a lot and doesn't miss on too many passes - they shorten the game. The Broncos will have to play soundly to keep the '09 dream alive. The only thing complacency or overconfidence will get you is beaten.

"At this stage of the playoffs (3rd round) teams do whatever they have to do to win." A Dayton coach.
10. Friday night, 7 p.m. Tully Stadium (S. of I=10 on Dairy Ashford)

Was talk of it being at 6, but another game was set for the afternoon. A lot of fans missed the first Dayton score and the fumble and recovery that set up the second touchdown because evidently, they were thinking 7:30 instead of 7, or relied on some misinformation. Anyway, this is what I have been told - Fri. 7 pm Tully.
11. If coming off FM 242, turn left off 242 onto Southbound I-45 feeder road heading south; work way into inside lane. Make U turn at Tamina /Research Forest Dr and head up northbound feeder road moving to right lane. At Shenandoah Park (Pappadeaux's) the officer will force you to turn right. The road makes a 90 degree right turn and becomes David Memorial Drive.

If you are coming north on I-45 from say, 1960 or Hardy Toll Rd, then take Exit 77 (Research Forest Dr and Tamina Rd. Proceed north through intersection, stay on feeder, moving to right lane and follow above instructions. Do not TR on Tamina - there is no stadium access from Tamina onto David Memorial and to the stadium. It's blocked before you get to the stadium and you'll turn left back to the feeder.

Stadium is on your left. Take second entrance (visitors). The first huge parking lot on the left is for home team tailgates. The second lot (turn left between lots and then right into lot) is for visitor team tailgates.

We will have Pappy's BBQ sandwhiches, chips, and drinks. We'll have a contribution container for those who want to pay. If things are tight, hey, we understand. Get you something to eat and drink.

We'll be set up and serving by 5 p.m. on the SW corner of that particular lot. Join us.

The stadium is lain out N and S. Visitor's seating is the East Stands.
