1. The Dayton Rotary Club is having a Fish Fry at Woodrow Wilson Junior High next Friday, October 29th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. (or until sold out) just before the Bronco's football game against Crosby!

Tickets are $10 each for all you can eat!

The proceeds of our Rotary fund raisers are for scholarships for Dayton High School Seniors as well as support for other community and international projects.  Thank you for your continued support of the Dayton Rotary Club and the students!

it's my understanding that tickets will be sold at the door. (Added - Wilson Jr. High faces S Hwy 146 just below the US 90 intersection)

NOW, the above was posted on another thread, but if you can meet up, say so.

I can be there from 4:30 to 5 pm, but will have to leave then for the stadium - it's senior night and I'll have lots to do. I'll be hard to miss in purple and white. Anybody else?
2. Great job guys, now let's really peel back some layers.

Crosby has had a tendency at times to start slow, especially in district. They got way behind C.E. King (do not make that mistake Friday night) and even behind North Forest 12-0 before getting their proverbial act together. I can't see proof that Crosby has gotten progressively better as the district season has gone by. Dayton, on the other hand, save for the first quarter lull against NF, has been nothing if consistent in both offensive production and defensive shutdowns. It's hard to measure a defenses progress when they've registered three shutouts.

Observation says that if Andres Herrera was 6-2, 195 he'd be among the top rated QB's in the country. His reads are superior to any QB we've had in a while, although Gregory Charles could read very well. At times Herrera, due to his short stature, does have some vision problems which shouldn't be compounded this week by Crosby's defensive line which has two 6-1 defensive ends in Blackburn and Williams and a 5-8 in Sewell, but whose DT's are 5-5, 5-6, and 5-8. The tallest LB is Colomb at 5-10 with the rest two to four inches shorter than that.

Merka, on the other hand has absolutely no trouble with vision, including overlooking the 6-9, 270 lb Cody Stevens at RT.

I will have to give the edge to Dayton in the running backs department as we have two who could play with anybody.

The best part about all this is that it is just over 31 hours until kickoff. Oh, and tomorrow night is Senior Night for DHS.
3. The clock on this site is set for Eastern Time. There is a setting that allows you to adjust for your own time zone. You only have to do it once, but you may have to adjust twice a year for CST and CDT - not sure if that's automatic or not, but it might be. I know it's a little thing because I personally don't spend a lot of time on message boards, but from the looks of it, some might be using this board for clock purposes. Thanks

Very astute observation--must be an accountant because you are looking at the facts. The only difference will be if variables are thrown into the equation. The variable are things like emotion, weather conditions, recent injuries, and coaching blunders.
Well, emotion will be high on both sides. The weather is supposed to be near perfect - clear skies and about 68-70 degrees at kickoff. Dayton is at 95% on the injury situation - couldn't tell you about Crosby.

Coaching Blunders? Wow! That's a trap. Covering the Broncos for the magazine, I know they are totally prepared for this game. They have plans and have instituted them into the first two practices of the week. Today is Wednesday so they'll fine-tune the hay and put it in the barn. Honestly (and I'm strickly going on the comparison between the two teams' defenses), IF Crosby hasn't concentrated more to fix their defense for this game then the blunder may have already happened.

FACT: Dayton is going to play defense. Coach Stewart brought that mindset to Dayton in 1996 and is still true to the formula - "offense sells tickets, but defenses win championships." If you bring a team against Dayton that is not sound defensively, then the game is already one-sided before it begins. IMO
5. Looking at this game from a purely objective viewpoint it looks like the outcome will be decided by defense. Not to be one who believes in the A beat B and C lost to B, so A will beat C kind of analogies, I do believe how teams do against common opponents, in other words, more than just a one-game comparison, is quite relevant to how they might fare against each other.

With that in mind, the two schools have four common district opponents, Baytown Lee, Galena Park, Goose Creek Memorial and North Forest. Crosby gave up 122 points to those four teams (27, 42, 41, 12) while Dayton, with two shutouts, gave up 29 (0, 22, 7, 0).

What "seems" apparant is that Crosby chooses to focus on offense with an attitude of outscoring opponents whereas Dayton tends to be successful on both sides of the ball. Not following Crosby as closely as I do Dayton (after all I am the pressbox announcer for the Broncos) I don't know if Crosby has had injuries through the defense or not. However, it would appear by the scoring in their games that they rather tend to outscore opponents rather than hold them down.

With the success of the Bronco defense this year against some very good competition, I really believe that focusing your efforts on just one side of the ball is not the best strategy when playing Dayton. For these reasons and these reasons only I believe Dayton wins. I'll go further and say that if Dayton gets up on Crosby quickly and they begin to doubt themselves, it could get ugly as far as the scoring goes.

The reason I began a new thread instead of putting this on the prediction thread is in hopes responses would be objective and without the puffing and boasting for creating not much more than hollow, empty comments.

So, what do you really think out there?
6. What makes his success so different is what he got there with. How many players have come out of Coach Stewart's Dayton High School football programs and started at a division one college? One. In other words his teams have defeated teams with several D-1 players when Dayton had none or few. It's amazing at times to look at the sizes involved with the teams Dayton meets on the field and yet they're able to go toe-to-toe with them and in most cases, win. Yep, truly amazing.
7. This question was proposed on another thread, but I thought it interesting enough to create one specifically for this question.

For Dayton, I can trace it back to definitely one of two years - either in 2000 or 2001 because Forest Brook defeated Dayton both of those years, 26-3 and 26-13 and one of them had to be a home game. The only other possibility is in 2004 when C.E. King defeated Dayton 45-34. It seems like that was a home game, but someone else is going to have to tag it for sure.

Meanwhile, through this past Friday night, Dayton's district record is 76-10 through 14 1/2 seasons under Coach Stewart. That includes six undefeated district seasons with the probability of adding a seventh in 2010. There were two, 1998 and 2002 undefeated during the regular season.
8. I would think strictly based on high school play. If they did their thing in college or pros then that would be an all-collegiate team or an all-pro team.
An example might be Kenneth Hall of Sugarland.
As far has how far back to go, might be better to create all-20-year teams, like 1990-2009, 1970-1989, etc. I'm sure there'd be enough candidates to fill three teams from each era and then you wouldn't be comparing someone from the 1950's to someone from 2000+. Just my two cents.
9. But that changes every Friday night in that district.

Exactly my point. None of the teams this year appear as strong as for the past couple of years - there's not the dominating presence or feeling this year as in year's past. So far, Dayton is the only dominating team in 19-4A - a clear and present leader which no one in 20-4A seems to be willing to step up and claim.

From the looks of it, Dayton, Galena Park and Crosby would be the odds on favorites to make the playoffs. The fourth spot will come from Barbers Hill or CE King. Goose Creek might be on the bubble, but Baytown Lee and North Forest are not. That would put GP and Crosby in division one. So, it appears that Dayton will play the second seed among the division II representatives of 20-4A, and thus the crux of my comment. Any conjecture on who that might be, or is it too early to tell?
10. "It's not how you start, it's how you finish," athletic director and head football coach Jerry Stewart has said time and time again.

This team is getting better and better each week. Now someone pointed out on another thread that Dayton had turnovers against Baytown Lee, and that was true, but not from the first team offense. Both the one fumble and one pass interception happened with second teamers in the backfield. Some might say it's because the first team only played most of the first half, but then one can't be sure. The point is the Broncos are improving each week on turnovers.

Another large improvement was in only getting penalized three times, especially given the crew that was out there that night.

The key is that over the last three games, Dayton has outscored their opponents 165-23, and six of those 23 came off a defensive score, so the Bronco defense has only allowed 17 points in district (the PAT was missed on that score). Some might want to say that this was a result of playing the three weakest teams in the district, however, Galena Park will most likely win out the rest of district, we'll find out plenty quick when they face Crosby.

IN any event we'll all know within a week or two just how things will shake out for the playoffs. I'm just wondering how much sweat will be pooring off the brows of 20-4A coaches as they stuggle to see which one winds up having to face Dayton the first game of the playoffs, and facing Galena Park is going to be no picnic either, so let the smack talk begin. Oh, I guess it already has.  ;D
11. Well, Price's team would have been beaten 100 to nothing

Best example of what an uninformed opinion is worth.

One thing no one has mentioned was the tardiness of the team coming out to play the game. Maybe they forsaw what was ahead for them. But I do know that we couldn't even wait on them to do our memorial to Reggie Garrett. Finally, after the Broncos had lined up for the national anthem, I sent word down to the Bronco sidelines whether to wait for BH (it was 6:58) or start the memorial. Coach Stewart said "Go with it." We did and BH didn't get to come out of their little tunnel until after the national anthem had been played.
Don't know why a coach thinks that intimidates anybody - it just pisses them off. 54-0, 'nuff said.
12. In 2008, due to the Smiley / Forest Brook fiasco where after the UIL established schedules, the TEA decided to combine or consolidate the two schools into one. This gave the Broncos a second open date at the end of the season. In 2009 they were able to fill that last game slot against an Austin school. FYI
13. Dayton has gotten involved in remembering Reggie Garrett.

Jerry Stewart and Dan Hooks go way back and are great friends on and off the field, but Jerry is more private when it comes to something like this and has reacted accordingly. He's been working on this ever since Monday, after all, he's old school.

He knows what kind of "sticker" he wants on the Broncos' helmets Friday night and has ordered them locally.

As the press box announcer, Coach Stewart and I have been working closely to come up with the proper words to say in memory of this valiant young man. Dayton certainly does not want any appearance of exploitation, but like Coach Stewart said, "it's something like this that puts the game in perspective."

So, Dayton will be wearing #12 Friday night and as I see from the list, our opponent, Barbers Hill will be also, and that will be mentioned in our address. We have also set up places at concession stands on each side of the field where fans can make their own donation to a memorial fund that will be turned over to Coach Hooks. We do all this for Reggie's family.

I know Coach Haynes has been there a few yrs.but where did he coach before Hardin? This should be a good game.I'll take Hardin by a td.
Come on, liltex, I know you're bound to remember when Haynes was at Crosby and his son played QB. After that seems like he went to a 5A school, I think in the Aldine district, but school politics got involved and he was reassigned. Then, if I'm not mistaken, he was the Off Coord. or QB coach for Dick Olin at Baytown Lee when he took the Hardin job.
15. http://elkinsfootball.com/schedule.php

Here is the football site - it goes to the schedule which shows 2010. If you click on roster, it evidently shows last year's roster. There is an article in today's Ft. Bend Sun that refers to Burkhalter as a junior which if correct nullifies the roster on this site as 2010's as it shows him as a So.

http://www.hcnonline.com/articles/2010/08/22//fort_bend_sun/sports//fb_prev_-_elkins_knights.txt

That being the case, the younger Matthews will have his work cut out for him.
16. They list only one QB on their roster, a soph, Jake Burkhalter, 5-9, 170.

Sr. Jake Matthews, 6-4, 270 is the offensive center and son of former Houston Oiler, Bruce Matthews. There is another Matthews on the roster, a soph Michael, 6-2, 240, I guess a brother, but in a district that big who knows for sure.

They are definitely large on both fronts, but then what's not shown on the roster is how much time they've put into the weight room, speed, etc. Dayton has played teams with bigger kids before so playing a team this size is nothing new.

17. Both teams had most of their offensive starters in for most of the scrimmage. If he didn't play the whole scrimmage then the sub got about one or two possessions and they weren't very long possessions, either.

This was not a ROUTINE scrimmage. This was a tune-up for the regular season with both staffs trying to fine-tune their regular season product. So for those of you who say, "it was just a scrimmage," evidently were not there.

Also, I was disappointed in the lack of fans from Nederland who were not there. This was a Saturday evening affair and as such should have been better represented by both towns, IMO.

OOOps, my bad, it was a Friday night. Golly gee these days and nights run together this time of year.
18. I don't remember when, but at sometime during the scrimmage I commented to a couple of coaches working the time devices how he seemed very tentative walking back to the huddle after a play and breaking the huddle. Once the ball was snapped he seemed fine, but almost immediately after the play walked almost stiff legged.

I watched him leave the field after everyone else had after having come down from the pressbox. He was walking very stiff-kneed at that point. If he wasn't injured prior to the scrimmage, then it had to be during the early part of the contest. IMO.
