  1. Not yet. Still in the courts. Right now we are planning to umpire as usual under the TASO banner. Scrimmages start next week.
  2. It will not matter if Jasper makes the playoffs. They go D1 with Gilmer and Carthage will go D2. They might both end up as state champs.
  3. It looks like it. Gilmer is the 2nd largest team in their district (Tyler-Chapel Hill is the largest). With the divisions being split, the largest team from each district that makes the playoffs will go division 1 and the other two go division 2. Being the largest school (enrollment) in their district, If Jasper makes the playoffs, they always go division 1. From the sound of the previous post, Chapel Hill will not be making the playoffs and being undefeated, Gilmer will. The two districts meet in the bi-district round, so that would mean that if Jasper makes the playoffs, they would get a rematch against Gilmer.
  4. As one who as officiated at the high school level in football, basketball, and baseball in both Texas and Louisiana I can attest to the fact that things will be different starting in the fall of 2010 when all of these changes become mandatory. It was also nice to know that when I called games for TASO and before, SOA, that someone had my back if there was a conflict with coaches or schools. During my years officiating in Texas I have always felt that there was someone to support my interests. Louisiana works under a similar situation to what the UIL desires here in Texas. The LHSAA governs all of the sports and officials across the border. During my years in Louisiana there always seemed to be a push back between the association that I worked in and the state. Push back is not great when it is with the people that are supposed to be representing your interests. The training and rule teaching that was conducted in Louisiana was inconvenient and difficult for most officials to attend. In short, it was an unfriendly environment to work in and led to me taking a hiatus from officiating for several years. Upon my return to Texas and to officiating, it was great to be a part of TASO and work with officials that strove to get better each game. Like Mrump1, I enjoy calling games and have no plans of quitting, but I hope that if everything changes like the UIL desires, that they will give officials what they are promising. We want training and education that help us elevate the level of officiating across the state. Most of us do not do it for the money, but we want to be respected and help provide a safe and fair environment on fields across the state. Aside from respect, we also want to be compensated fairly for the time that we put in. It is expensive to officiate. Most guys that do baseball easily have over $1000 invested in equipment and uniforms...some have 3 and 4 times that invested.
  5. The officiating issue is likely to be a huge deal. Many longtime officials might choose not to continue. It could be an interesting few months leading up to Basketball and Baseball seasons.
  6. Work on the grammar of your post. It was very difficult to read. I do not know about past years, but Evadale was a very good team last year. They ran into a tough team in the regional semifinals that should have made the state tournament, but played poorly against Overton. Their district might be weak, but they beat some good teams in the playoffs last year. Competition is different at the 1-A level. Due to numbers your teams good teams are not as loaded as they are in the larger schools. One bad day can get you eliminated in the playoffs.
  7. We are heading up on Friday and planning on eating at the Market and Deli. Never eaten there before, but I have heard great things. Going to get there early so we can head over to the stadium and watch a football game...not sure if this one will classify as "good" but Hopefully being 2-0 in district will be good. Lets just hope Gilmer goes DII if they make the playoffs...I would rather have a rematch of last year's Chapel Hill bi-district game.
  8. You would pass them if they were football players. That dont sound fair to them or the other students, thay should have to show some effort on thier part . So, let me get this straight...if you are going to pass them all the 1st six weeks so they would eligible for football, would you also have to pass them all the first six weeks period that runs into baseball, basketball, track, power lifting, etc... If that were the case students would get a free pass all of the six weeks. If your system were put into place it would further degrade our already struggling education system just so that you would have a game to watch for a couple of months each fall. Most of these players will never play past high school and if they do not have a sound education they will not be able to get into college or have a job that will support their family after high school. But, lets do it so they can suit up 10 times and play under the lights...wow. I love all high school sports, but I do not believe that we should mortgage the future of our Student-Athletes just so they can play a game.
  9. If it is like what they do up here in the offseason, it is teams made up of returning players that are not coached by the school coaches. They usually just wear T-shirts and not school uniforms either. If you look closely, you might see a coach watching down the foul lines. So the games are basically a chance for players to get work in.
  10. It looks like a spam post. It has appeared on a couple of other threads as well.
  11. I would think Jasper would have to make it. They have a lot coming back from a team that made the playoffs last year...and lost to the eventual state champs.
  12. Do have a schedule as to when and where they will be playing.
  13. 9am A-AAA Underclassmen 12pm AAAA-AAAAA Underclassmen 3pm A-AAA Upperclassmen 6pm AAAA-AAAAA Upperclassmen
  14. The 3a and down underclassmen game does start at 9. I assume that means that they were underclassmen during the pass season. I believe the 4a-5a underclassmen play at 12, the 3a and down Upperclassmen play at 3 and the 4a-5a upperclassmen play at 6. I am just one of the umpires. I do not know for sure, but this is what I was told. I know that I am calling in the 3a and down underclassmen game that starts at 9. Hope this helps.
  15. The games are on for Saturday June the 20th. It sounds like it will be 4 games. 1a-3a Underclassmen, 4a-5a Underclassmen, 1a-3a Upper Classmen, and 4a-5a Upperclassmen. All of the money raised is for a great cause. As I know more details they will be posted.
