1.

They really dont run up the score, they just play the way they play for all 4 qtrs which is full court non stop press as soon as they get off of the bus. They are extrememly deep so even when they clear the bench they are better than some starting fives.
I think that's the problem. No one should be pressing with that type of lead. It is possible to alter that style of play. You just have to be willing to do it.
I've seen it both ways. I know coaches that will run it up because if the opposing coach could do it to them they would. This is a prevalent theme up here in DISD in football and basketball. Carter's head coach regularly runs it up on teams. It was disgraceful watching them run it up on a North Dallas team that went 0-28 last year. (The game was on MetroSports and Carter pressed the entire game.) He ran it up on us the first meeting and then proceeded to tell several folks that he was going to put a 100 on Madison in the Coca-Cola. Didn't quite work out that way and he lost the rematch 77-75 in the semis when we had everyone, unlike the first meeting. Our head basketball coach at Madison is from Chicago and he seems to take a different approach. He really doesn't believe in running up the score. Last year he took it easy on Roosevelt in the first meeting. We were up 40 in the 3rd quarter and he let our back-up 5 play point guard the rest of the game (For those that were at The Drum that'd be the kid with the knee high socks who took the half-court shot at the end of regulation in the title game.). Personally I wanted him to run it up since Velt did it to us the year before, but he believes in being decent to teams that are down, even fierce rivals. He took it easy on several district opponents as well. This year against Velt he might be inclined to put it on Velt because their new head coach has been running his mouth to anyone that'll listen about how he's going to beat Madison and "make them play basketball"...
2.
When is the time going to come then? This is the same Yates program that beat Oak Hill and St. Patricks two years ago on back to back nights. This is a dynasty in the making.
It happens to everyone eventually. Some teams got payback on SOC last season after their run came to an end. No one stays on top forever.
3. Any of y'all that go to this tournament will probably enjoy watching SOC. They're young this year, but they play hard. They gave us (Madison) a great game in summer league play down in Lancaster and another good one in fall league over at SOC. They're not as tall as the teams that went to Austin for four straight years, but they play just as hard as those teams did. Whoever draws them in that tournament better be ready to play physical for 32 minutes. Kimball returns just two starters from last year, but they'll still be good. Skeeter Henry's son Jarion plays for Kimball. The elder Henry was a Sooner great in the 80's. His son is pretty thin, but he's 6'8" and will fit in well with the Knights.
4. We don't really have many guys who crossover between football and basketball at Madison. I believe we have two players who will be reserves on the basketball team currently playing football. One is our starting QB who goes 6'7" and the other is a 6'3" WR who starts as well. Other than that we don't have anyone else on the football field right now.
5. Since I don't really see any Region III teams due to living in Dallas (Madison doesn't head down to Beaumont anymore so I don't have a reason to make a trip down that way.), who do y'all folks think will be the cream of the crop in the region this year? Obviously things could look far different by the end of the season, but as of right now who would be the teams that should be among the best down that way?
6. I was thinkin the same thing! DM was suppposed to destroy anyone they faced!!! What happened!?! ??? ??? ??? Really? We were supposed to destroy anyone we faced? Which internet poster did you get that from? We've had several close games like this one during the course of the season. We aren't a team that blows our opponent out of the water. We just grind them for 32 minutes (Or in this case 36 minutes) and wear them down. The SOC title teams are what we play like. Throw in that our all-state SG, junior Tim Flentroy, was playing at 70 percent healthwise and I'm ecstatic to be able to get a win in the title game. The 70 percent isn't a random number on how healthy he was. That came straight from one of our assistants who also happens to be his uncle. He said that before we played Stafford on Thursday and I saw with my own eyes how injured he was when I stopped by the school to pick up my tickets earlier this week. I'm very proud of Junebug (That's his nickname. I've never actually called him by his given name of Tim...lol. Heck his dad never calls him Tim!) for playing on one healthy ankle over the last 5 playoff games. Estacado was a very, very good team and I FULLY EXPECTED a down to the wire finish and that's exactly what everyone at The Drum got. Wagner is a bad boy for the Matadors and I'm willing to bet he'll have them back down there again before he graduates in two years. I still can't believe that we're adding another trophy to the case, but man what a ride it was this entire season with this group. They were so much fun to watch and they just played so darn hard game after game after game. I'm so proud of the boys and our coaching staff for what they were able to accomplish this year. They represented the school, South Dallas and DISD exceptionally well and I'm thankful to each and every one of them for all the hard work they put in to achieve winning the 2009 title. I don't think even the most ardent Trojan fan would've ever imagined finishing the season on a 25 game winning streak, but gosh it was a fun ride that us Trojan fans will never forget. I'm still way too excited about the win and I'm looking forward to the parade through South Dallas in the next week or so. That should be a lot of fun.
7. That was at the YMBL tourney at Lamar University. I couldn't remember the initials for the tourney and I didn't want to put the wrong thing down...lol. I wish we still could travel down there to play in that one, but we can't travel down there anymore due to the cost of going down there. I think the fartherest away we got to go this year was up to Oklahoma for a tournament in Hugo.
8. I hope we can find a way to get one more victory. It would've been nice to play the Hawks because it's been about 4 or 5 years since we last played H-J. The last time we played was a tournament game in Beaumont that we won 63-62 if memory serves correct. Estacado looks like a really, really good team so it's going to take the best game of the year from the Trojans to pull it out. The Matadors have Coach Mobley's full attention and I'll be interested to see how he decides to play them Saturday morning.
9. We've been a 3A school since the 2002 realignment. We were 3A when we won it in 97, but in 1998 we opted back up to 4A for two realignments. We're barely hanging on as a 3A. Our enrollment last time was 523 students, which was just 73 above the cutoff for 2A.
10. They messed up on our total appearances. They left off our trip down there in 2000 in 4A.
11. I would be for having a shot clock at the high school level. The only thing that Iam not sure of is how long the shot clock should be. With quarters lasting just 8 minutes I think I would be in favor of either a 25 or 30 second shot clock. Anything more than that I would more than likely be opposed to. There will probably never be a shot clock at the high school level, but if there was it would drastically change the style of play for many, many teams across the state.
12. I have kept hearing that Madison is overwhelmingly the favorite, number one in the state and rarely challenged. If that is the case, why the 3 pt win in the regional final? I usually read this site during football season (I usually just post and moderate on the DFW board, one of the sister sites to this one) to keep up with WO-S and a few others, but since H-J is going back down to The Drum I thought I'd post here a bit this week before heading down to Austin. I'm a Trojan fan and I can say that I'm a bit perplexed by the statement that you've heard we're the overwhelming favorite and are rarely challenged. We've had close games all season long. The win in the regional final against the Hawks would've been six, but they banked in a three at the buzzer to make the final margin a three point game. PG was a very good team that wouldn't go away. They were down 16 late in the 3rd and they made one final run to get within three late in the 4th. Against Argyle we won it at the buzzer. Argyle was one heckuva team with one of the best guards (Their trio was among the best in the state too.) in the state and they gave us all we could handle. This group of Trojans is kinda unique for us. They're a very fundamentally sound team that has taken a page out of SOC's book and plays physical from start to finish. We've had some teams in the past that had more talent, but as far as how hard they work and how well they understand the game they're equal to any of our teams from the late 90's as well as the earlier part of this decade. The style of play took awhile to get used to, but it's grown on me and Coach Mobley has done a very good job getting the kids to buy into the style of play he wants to see on both ends. Good luck to the Hawks and if we're fortunate enough to be able to find a way to pull out a win against a very, very good team from Stafford, maybe we'll get to play on Saturday if they make it past the Matadors.
