Lewisville's 1996 championship came to pass because of its unstoppable run game
01:14 AM CST on Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Column by MATT WIXON / The Dallas Morning News

The 1996 Lewisville team didn't have a huge offensive line, a star running back or high-flying receivers catching passes from a flashy strong-armed quarterback. But the Farmers averaged 45 points per game in the playoffs and had one of the most feared offenses in the state.
"They are unstoppable," a Converse Judson linebacker said.
The linebacker said that after Lewisville beat Judson, 58-34, without attempting a single pass in the Class 5A Division I state title game. Lewisville just ran over Judson to finish off a 15-0 season.
"We averaged over 10 yards a carry," quarterback Michael Odle remembers. "The run game was so successful, we never did have to pass."
That Lewisville didn't attempt a pass seems remarkable, especially when considered from today's football landscape, dotted with spread offenses. But Lewisville found success in basic football - and logic. Lewisville's Wishbone offense ran at defenses until it was stopped, and the way Lewisville executed, that rarely happened.
In the title game, fullback Luke Taylor rushed for 154 yards, Odle rushed for 140 and halfback Kenan Gray rushed for 100. Halfback Danielle Brazzell added 95 yards rushing as Lewisville piled up 541 yards.
"Coach [Ronnie] Gage said that we got better every game that we played," Odle says. "We were executing pretty much flawlessly."
Judson cut Lewisville's lead to 41-34 after three quarters, but the Farmers dominated the fourth quarter and killed the clock to win their second state title in four years. It was the fifth straight playoff win by more than 20 points for Lewisville, whose playoff opponents had a combined record of 56-4. Lewisville beat those teams by a combined score of 225-59.
"We weren't the most talented group around," Odle says, "but we played for each other. It was like a family."
Odle is trying to create the same bond among his players at Barbers Hill, a school 30 miles east of Houston. Odle is the offensive coordinator for Gage, who coached Austin College from 2007 to 2009 and became the Barbers Hill coach in January. Barbers Hill (7-3) faces Port Neches-Groves (6-4) on Friday in the first round of the 4A Division II playoffs.
Barbers Hill hopes to make a deep run, but it won't match Lewisville's magical season in 1996, when a team with few stars had many shining moments. The biggest came in front of 20,000 fans at Waco's Floyd Casey Stadium, as Odle and his teammates finished a perfect season.
"That meant a lot to us to look back at it and know that we didn't have a blemish," Odle says. "Nobody could touch u"

One day closer to game day.

I know...can't wait!  I just went and picked up a PNG raincoat...just in case cause neither rain, snow, sleet or hail can keep me from cheering the INDIANS down the VICTORY trail!!!

Seriously though, I'm praying for a good injury free game on both sides and wishing our BH neighbors a safe trip!

LET'S DO THIS!!!

BH needs the respect they deserve! preach it sir AC

They will get what they deserve all right. BH fans banking on the rain slowing us down, better think again. I would think it would create more problems for the ball handling your QB has to do, I am guessing there is a lot of misdirection and sticking the ball in the upback's gut, then pulling it out depending on the read. Our passing game would be affected by the wind a lot more than the rain.

    • The locals have almost finished firing the first ever Speaker of the House from Southeast Texas upon direct order of Trump and his minions.   It's a sad day... Locals have decided that being represented by the most powerful man in the House didn't mean anything.... they'd rather a political novice to represent this part of SETX.  And why is that?  He wasn't MAGA enough for them.  Who cares that it will hurt locally... What Trump says, goes.     Just yesterday I saw Trump on television demanding that we fire Phelan... How he's a RINO, weak on the border, etc... why?  Because he wouldn't overlook the criminal actions done by Ken Paxton, one of Trump's key supporters in the effort to overturn the 2020 Election and allow Trump to remain in office despite the will of the voters.   Trump never even mentioned Covey's name, and I doubt he would recognize Covey if Covey walked up with a cup of coffee.  Who cares that it's bad for SETX?  Not the R voters from SETX!   Then I saw Covey's preacher on a different ad tell a bald face lie.  Why should Phelan be fired?  "He put Democrats in positions of power in the House."  Really?  That's been the position of BOTH parties for as long as anybody can remember.  They ALWAYS give the minority party committee chairmanships.  But in 2022 the Rs decided that the practice should stop.  Democrat voters should not be allowed a voice in the crafting of legislation if there is a single majority Republican seat in the House, according to the Rs.  Representative Government?  Never heard of it, huh? Never did I believe that we'd have an abortion ban, constitutional carry, huge cuts for school property taxes, and Texas law enforcement being greenlit to enforce immigration law.  But it all happened while Phelan was speaker.  Without a doubt, the most conservative Speaker, ever.  But still a dirty RINO for not being MAGA enough.  It would be funny if it weren't true.   I've been following politics long enough to remember when Rs couldn't get elected in Texas... I'm confident that we're headed back that direction.  I mean, it's obvious that with population shifts we'll be turning blue eventually.  I think that the behavior of the leadership of the Republican Party is going to cause that shift sooner than expected.  I won't be surprised to see Democrat Senators and possibly even a governor elected within 12 years.  Maybe less.  The Rs will be a party apparatus without a voting base behind them.
