LANGSTON PREVIEW

Recommended Posts

The Cards will be better off because the schedule contains weaker teams, outside of South Dakota:

Langston - NAIA
South Alabama - CUSA (2009 Start-up)
North Dakota - FCS (Recently DII)
Georgia State - FCS 2010 Start-up
South Dakota - FCS (Upset Minnesota)
Oklahoma Panhandle - Division II

It seems like the Cards have a great chance to finish 4-2 with wins over
Langston
South Alabama
Georgia State (Upset win)
Oklahoma Panhandle

South Alabama is actually a Sun Belt team, but they did beat Nicholls State a few weeks ago so they will be tough to beat.
Oops, you're right. I don't know why I gave them so much credit. They  beat by Nicholls, who has been having an off year for the last 3 years or so. Heck, they only beat Bacone 44-28. By those numbers, I think y'all can beat them.

South Alabama has been enjoying some great fan support.  The Mobile metro area is over 600K now and they've been hosting some bowl game there for a long time so they were probably ready for a local team.  They've already lined up Navy, Southern Miss and a few others to play there in the coming years.  South Alabama has around 15K students I believe so they're not much bigger than Lamar.  It should be a great game next week against them, I hope there's another sellout for it.

The stadium holds 40,000 but 26,783 in attendance is the most they played before at home. Most of the other games they are playing before fan's in a half empty stadium.  ??? ???

Would you want to go to a game where their schedule looks like a field of junior colleges.  I would expect to see a good increase in the next few years.
Thanks you just proved my point in that it matters not only winning but who we are playing. To answer your question; no I wouldn't spend a dime to see any of those teams play.

I think once they start playing some real teams that people know, they'll see their attendance spike. I think that's what's been best for the Lamar program. Starting off with McNeese is a school that people in the area KNOW about. Following it up with SFA and Sam are good choices because people are familiar with the name of those schools.

Come on guys, be honest if Lamar played before a crowd of 8,000 at Provost Umphrey with capacity being 16,000 against anyone there would be all kinds of negative talk on this forum. Especially with the program being new and everyone excited about the football program.

South Alabama is in Mobile with a population of about 200,000. So to play before the crowds listed in a 40,000 seat stadium is a little surprising IMHO.

Last year South Alabama played a basically JV schedule and they had great crowds.  This year they've only played one FCS school and that was Nicholls State.  I think those attendance numbers are great for who they are playing.  Now we'll see what happens when they start losing against tougher competition.  But since they'll be playing in the Sun Belt, if they average around 20K they'll be doing pretty well.

well, seeing the way this thread went, I guess Langston is pretty much a mystery
They're ranked 16 in NAIA:

Webber International is on the list at 24 after not being ranked the week before. Considering how close the Webber game was, but game may be tougher than some people think. I still give the edge to the Cards, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a last minute upset by the Lions.

It looks like Langston runs a 4-3 defense and on offense they run a one back system with the QB Chad Miller being the star that runs the show. He is very elusive and makes plays with his feet.

The university is located in Langston, Okla. There are 2,750 students. They play in a NAIA conference and their nickname is the Lions. They won their league championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and they finished second in the conference last season.
