funny things happen on the football field

Recommended Posts

I remember just a few years ago at Huffman when one end of the fields lights went out and just about the time they got them turned back on the automatic sprinklers on the field came on. I think it was a hex that Huffman was trying to put on us but it backfired.  ;D

The PNG fans weren't laughing, Skip!!!!  No offense to you, ('cause I think you're cool), but the Indian is revered at PN-G and is not just a "mascot" but a symbol and a leader!  They take pride in sending the Indian to learn the correct war dance, etc. and it was taken as a direct attack on the entire school and fan base.  Had the bear jumped on a Bulldog or a Mustang, it might have been a different matter, even though WOS would NEVER forget something like that (LOL).  It was vandalism, just like the year that the kids from LCM vandalized WOS high school.

I was watching that tape of the "Incident" yesterday and it is just as funny now as it was then.  The Bear did initiate the first "Fisticuffs", however, the Indian came on the LCM side the scond time and was just asking for it, so the Bear let him have it.  What alot of people forget is the GREAT FOOTBALL Game that followed the Bear vs. Indian.  LCM goes down 21-7 at halftime only to come back and win 34-21 behind Bo Louis, Chris Omey, and Jeremy Crossin + A great Bear Defense.

Maybe the Indian did "provoke" the Bear, as you say.  Hell, the PNG band and the fans provoke the opposing team in every game!  I was just trying to ease some of the backlash that is more than likely going to prevail on this thread as soon as the PNG fans read that part, that's all.

I hope you are not implying that LCM stundents are the only ones to ever paint schools or burn letters into opposing teams fields??

when we were playing Lumberton last year we were ahead by one touchdown...when Lumberton finally made a touchdown their flag runners ran in front of our stands. and right through our cheerleaders while they were doing a cheer. so one of our cheer leaders tripped the last runner and everybody was throwing the footballs that the cheerleaders threw in the stands at them. this guy in front of me threw on and it hit the same guy in the back of the head right after he was tripped.

I remember that incident, it wasn't funny though, it was classless. >:(

Remember a few years ago when on of our players celebrated after a big tackle.  Obviously, Coach didn't like it.  Coach grabbed him and slapped his helmet and gave him a huge earful of choice words that everyone in the stands heard! :o :o The look on the players face after that was priceless.  I  found that kind of funny because the player was 6'5" and the coach was 5'4" with shoes on.

I remember a PNG - Ned game in the early 90's when Booby August (pun intended) made the statement in the local media that they (Ned) had some trick plays up their sleeves for PNG.  With the score something like PNG 35 Ned 0 at the half, the run thru sign for PNG said "Silly Dogs...Tricks Are For Kids!"  Classic!!! ;D

  • 3 weeks later...

I don’t know if this counts because it didn’t happen in a regular football game or on a regular football field. It did happen in a regulation college intramural football game, played on a regulation intramural football field, though.

My roommate, Chuck, was playing on one of the teams, and they didn’t exactly set the league on fire, as they lost every game. But on one occasion Chuck was a participant in a play that can probably be considered funny, and was certainly one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen on a football field.

It was the final game, and the other team was having an easy time dispatching Chuck and his teammates. They had already scored two touchdowns and were cruising to their third. And when the opportunity presented itself they threw a pass. The intended receiver was wide open in the end zone. Chuck should have been covering him but he wasn’t anywhere near. He did try to correct the situation when he realized where the pass was going. He came charging up as fast as he could, but with no hope of getting there in time to break up the pass.

However it had rained recently, the grass was slick, and suddenly Chuck’s feet shot right out from under him. He went into an uncontrollable skid, with his body almost parallel with the ground and his arms flailing wildly. And since he was approaching on the back side of the intended receiver, that fellow had no idea what was happening to Chuck. He was just standing there, apparently all alone in the end zone, watching the easy pass glide toward his hands.

I was watching too, as a spectator standing on the other side of the lines marking the playing field, and I had a close up view of what happened. The ball arrived, right on target, right in the intended receiver’s hands. A half second later, it couldn’t have been as long as one full second, it must have been less, Chuck’s slide came to an end as he skidded flat on his back into the intended receiver’s ankles. The intended receiver, who didn’t see this coming and was completely unprepared for a chop to his ankles, was so startled that he dropped the ball. Which landed squarely on Chuck’s chest. And Chuck instinctively clutched the ball with his arms. I was watching and I’m not sure Chuck was even aware of what he was doing.

The official was standing there watching too, and three things were evident. (1) The ball made contact with the intended receiver’s hands before Chuck hit his ankles. (2) The intended receiver never had possession. (3) The ball never touched the ground. And so the official immediately ruled the play an interception.

Chuck didn’t have a chance to celebrate, though. He came out of it with a badly sprained ankle, and was on crutches for the next few weeks. Which wiped out his plans to play intramural basketball that season.

Football—it’s a great game.

It was in the in the mid 70's not really sure somewhere between 74-77. Jasper was playing Silsbee and we (Jasper) was about to kick off.  Our kick off specialist Oscar Beatty had put the ball on the tee.  We all got ready the whistle blew and we took off.  Oscar went to kick the ball and missed, but on the back swing of his kick he hit the ball, which landed about 15 yards behind the kick off team.  The announcer being on his toes, announced "onside attempt by Oscar Beatty" From then on he was known as Onside Oscar.

    • Where were the 8 Omaha teams in D1's preseason top 25 poll... 2. Florida 8. A&M 9. Tennessee 13. N.C.State 14. Virginia 15. North Carolina Kentucky - unranked Florida State - unranked
    • That TDS is really flaring. Now do Biden. You have way, way, way more material. And keep that bitter "you are better than me" jealousy tone you have with Trump. You know Biden, the one you want everyone to vote for instead of Trump. Somehow you didn't acknowledge my pleas for you to die a painful death. I was quite certain that is how you would have interpreted my previous post. I guess when your focus is Trump 24/7, nothing else matters.
    • I have a better one. The point that nobody wants to acknowledge is that Dems are crossing over to vote Trump in the primaries and in the general so he will win the presidency. That way Trump will get the blame when the Dems implement their sinister plan to deport all of the minorities in the country. They have already laid the groundwork...convincing everyone that Trump and Republicans are racist (without providing any proof). Then it will be just a matter of time to execute their White supremacy plan of the great purge of the dirty, unwashed, heathen, non-Whites that roam freely in this country. I think my theory is more viable than your theory. Maybe we can get some other ridiculous scenarios so we can start a poll.
    • But that’s what Trump’s fanboys don’t understand.  When he talked about sexually assaulting women, y’all laughed it off as “locker room talk.”  When it was proven that he raped E. Jean Carroll, you cried that it was all an injustice… a lie. Even though he’d already confessed to doing the same thing to other women.  John McCain has suffered and sacrificed more for his country than practically anybody, except possible gold star families… and Trump called him a loser or something to that effect. “Oh, it was a joke that no one was supposed to take seriously.” But when Trump, after disrespecting the sacrifices of one of our most valiant, y’all are like “just because Trump didn’t go to Omaha Beach doesn’t mean he isn’t pro military!” Really? All you have to do is listen to what he said about McCain’s service. Not McCain as an opponent, not McCain’s political views… about the fact that the man was tortured, probably raped, and who knows what all else for over five years for swearing an oath and putting on the uniform.  But all of y’all supposedly “pro military” people just laughed along with Trump. “Good one, Sir! Maverick my new-hind! Filthy Rino!”  I don’t understand how the same people (y’all) who probably always say “thank you for your service” to any veteran still support a guy who craps on the ones who suffered the most on our behalf.  It’s baffling.
