I tell you one thing.  OUR PLAYERS  played a whole lot better.  I was impressed by that.  but our coaching...that's another story.  That same stupid sweep play by Hall wasnt' working.  We pass the ball get a first down then we do that same play again.  I'll never understand.  The bears caught us with an up the middle run, and looked like he had paydirt.  One of our defenders caught him from behind and I believe they kicked a FG.  On LC-M behalf, their defense looked good.  They mad some key stops and made good tackles.  On offense they had some costly fumbles that halted their drives while in the red zone, as a previous poster said.  I am very impressed by this Driver kid.  He will hands down win player of the year in this district.  He stands tall and throws high percentage passes.

Mistakes cost Bears; Jags win, 17-10

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

LITTLE CYPRESS — Through the non-district schedule Little Cypress-Mauriceville Coach Todd Moody saw his team miss opportunities and fumble the ball away too many times.

He thought those troubles — LC-M has lost nine-of-14 fumbles — this season — were over and done with.

Both problems reared their ugly heads again Friday night at Battlin’ Bear Stadium and the Central Jaguars took advantage to win 17-10.

Twice in the first half the Bears (1-3, 0-1) had golden opportunities to take a commanding lead over the Jaguars (3-1, 1-0) only to watch the chance go by in a flash.

After holding the Jaguars on downs on their initial drive of the game LC-M’s Kendrex Salter, who had 107 yards on 22 carries, put the Bears up 7-0 with a 4-yard touchdown run.

The Bears drove 67 yards on the scoring drive and Max Perkins was able to knock home the point after.

Perkins then pooch-kicked the kickoff and LC-M’s Jared Winbush recovered on the Jaguars 35.

LC-M could do nothing with the opportunity and went three-and-out.

Central’s Derrick Hall, who the Bears held to 25 yards on 11 carries, fumbled the ball away and LC-M was quick to recover.

With a chance to add to the 7-0 lead, the Bears took over on the Jags 11 yard line only to miss a 28-yard field goal.

The wasted opportunities did not stop in the second half as LC-M twice fumbled inside the Central 20 yard line.

“The positive is our kids and how they responded,†Moody said. “The disappointment is not taking advantage of our opportunities to win ballgames this year. I don’t know how to correct the fumbling. We work on it in practice. The bottom line is we have to do it under pressure. I thought we had it fixed coming into the game.â€

The Jaguars held a 17-7 lead at the half as Central amounted 229 yards of offense compared to 83 for the Bears.

Fernando Uribe kicked a 19 yard field goal as time expired in the first half after the Jaguars drove 64 yards to end the second quarter.

The Bears inched closer with 4:36 left in the game as Perkins drilled a 30-yard field goal.

LC-M’s drive was almost ruined on a third-and-3 play as Driver fumbled only to recover the football — setting up Perkins’ kick.

Driver led the Bears down the field with a nice passing attack in the drive with 53 yards passing to Phillip Richard, who finished with six catches for 91 yards.

Driver was 8-for-12 passing for 101 yards.

The Bears defense, which gave up 284 yards on the night, did its job by stopping the Jaguars from scoring again after Central took over with 4:30 left in the game.

As Central went to punt, the snap flew over Isaiah Wise’s head and LC-M took over at the Jaguars 48.

The Bears got down to the Jaguars 11 yard line with under 30 seconds left in the game but a fourth down hook-and-ladder play fell short and Central was able to run out the clock.

The Jaguars overall team speed limited Bears runs on the night, and on offense Central was able to take big chunks at a time.

“It is only one game in district,†Moody said. “We are not the only team that is going to lose to those guys in district. I guarantee that. They have speed all over the place. That is the most team speed we have been up against all year.â€

The Jaguars tied the game at 7 with 23 seconds left in the first quarter when Central running back Charles Thomas was in the right place at the right time after fumbling.

Thomas took a handoff from quarterback Patrick Fobbs at the Bears 14 only to fumble the ball forward and into the end zone. Thomas, the only player from Central who could have legally recovered the ball in the end zone, did just that for a touchdown.

The scoring drive was kept alive on a third-and-6 pass for 36 yards from Fobbs to Wise bring the Jaguars down to the LC-M 25 yard line.

Thomas then gave Central its first lead with 10:03 left in the second with a 26 yard touchdown run. Thomas finished with 61 yards on five carries.

The touchdown was set up by a 12-yard run from Hall and a 24-yard scamper from Fobbs.

“Our kids never quit,†Moody added. “That is the main thing. It all came down to we were given early chances and we just did not get it done. All we can do is keep working and get better. Another positive is we played a very good team and we played with them all night.â€

Central finished the night with 11 penalties for 71 yards while LC-M had six for 40 yards.

The Jaguars now lead the series 5-1 against the Bears.

The Bears will travel to Port Neches-Groves next week. LC-M downed PN-G 42-0 a year ago. Central will play host to the Nederland Bulldogs.
